SUMMARY:Monthly Speakers Program for the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of NM (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:10:30 am \nJoin Filiberto Pacheco for his presentation “Sephardic Jews\, The Road North to Northern New Mexico.” Crypto-Judism is the secret adherence to Judaism while publicly professing to be of another faith. The term is especially applied historically to Spanish Jews who outwardly profess Catholicism. Research has shown articles about the survival of “Crypto-Jewish” family practices and traditions in New Mexico and adjacent areas. Many families from Northern New Mexico are now seeking their roots in these areas. There seems to be no clear standard name to describe the Crypto Jews from New Mexico. Some refer to them as Sephardim or Sefardita\, also Sephardic and anusim and lastly Marranos (Pigs). \nWhy did the families from Northern New Mexico depart Mexico in the year 1598? With my presentation today\, I hope to be able to answer this question. The Pacheco name will be used extensively\, as it is historically involved in the movement. \nHGRC member Filiberto Pacheco retired from the United States Army with 27 years of service.  He was stationed in France\, Germany\, Belgium\, Turkey\, various forts in the United States\, and two tours in Viet Nam.  Born in Cleveland\, New Mexico Mr. Pacheco attended St. Michaels School in Santa Fe\, Augusta University and Maryland University.  Mr. Pacheco formed his own company\, which did contract work for Sandia and Los Alamos Labs\, White Sands\, Oak Ridge\, TN.

DESCRIPTION:5:30-7 pm\nNHCC Library\, History and Literary Arts Building \nOpera novices and aficionados are invited to three free interactive presentations about  “María de Buenos Aires\,” Astor Piazzola’s extraordinary tango-opera. Over three Wednesday evenings\, poet Valerie Martínez and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead you on a magical journey through the story\, the libretto\, the music\, and the staging of this evocative work\, which tells the story of María\, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires\, who sleepwalks through life\, death\, the afterlife\, and is reborn into “innocence.” The music\, by tango legend Ástor Piazzolla\, is based on “nuevo tango\,” a genre that Piazzolla revolutionized by infusing Argentine tango with elements of jazz and classical music. Those who attend all three sessions will receive a 50% discount on tickets to a performance of the show\, which runs from February 17-24 in the Journal Theater. \nDates and Topics: \nJanuary 23: Story\, Text\, and Context\, with Valerie Martínez \n\n Maria’s Argentina: old tango bars\, duende\, crafting the libretto\, signs and symbols\, magical realism.\n\nJanuary 30: The Music\, with Oliver Prezant \n\nAstor Piazzola and Tango Nuevo\, singing the story-setting the text\, the music of character and situation.\n\nFebruary 6: Maria on Stage – “Operita” or Opera? with Oliver Prezant \n\nDirector’s choice: blocking\, lighting\, sets\, costumes. Maria in the land of musical theater and opera.\n\nRegister for the workshops HERE. \nValerie Martínez is currently the Director of History and Literary Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. SUMMARY:Noche Flamenca Gala Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nJoin Mayor Keller of Albuquerque\, NCCP\, and ArtPlace America for this extraordinary event! Enjoy a tapas dinner from La Fonda del Bosque\, paired with wine from the award-winning Casa Rondeńa Winery\, in an intimate setting at the beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center. Experience flamenco at its most passionate\, as internationally-renown cantaor Vicente Griego and his group REVÓZO\, with dancers featuring Marisol Encinias of the National Institute of Flamenco\, as they reach for duende in a stripped-downtablao performance. \n \nSpecial thanks to the City of Albuquerque\, National Hispanic Cultural Center\, Vicente Griego\, Casa Rondeńa Winery\, and Chuy Martinez for donating time and space to make this special event possible. \nProceeds for this event will go towards supporting CPL Summit Scholarships. \nThe Creative Placemaking Leadership Summits are important for the development of ideas\, relationships\, and projects in the field\, and all around the country. They allow people from all disciplines and geographies to meet with peers\, get ideas and make connections that will benefit the entire field for years to come. But we can’t\, in good conscience\, invite only those who can afford it. We risk continuing the echo chambers we so often see in our news and social media. When creating a diverse and dynamic conversation around building communities through arts and cultural programming\, it’s critical to have better\, and deliberate representation. People from rural areas\, poor and working class people\, LGBTQ folks and people of color are currently underrepresented at our summits and we want everyone’s voice at the table. Help us get them there. Everyone needs more artists in their lives. They provide not only hands-on knowledge of tools and techniques\, but a creative outlook on processes and collaboration. Grassroots advocates and leaders of tomorrow voice the challenges and opportunities of communities. People of color\, native\, and immigrant communities support the diversity of stories that are the very foundation for the field of creative placemaking. \nMore information at cpcommunities.org/support.
