Hailed as “gospel titans” by Rolling Stone\, the Blind Boys of Alabama first rose to fame in the segregated South with their thrilling vocal harmonies and roof-raising live show. They released their debut single in 1948\, launching a 70-year career that would see them rack up five Grammy awards and collaborate with everyone from Mavis Staples and Stevie Wonder to Prince and Lou Reed. DESCRIPTION:6-8 pm \nKnown for mixing history with contemporary themes\, Eric J. Garcia always tries to create art that is much more than just aesthetics. Born and raised in Albuquerque’s South Valley\, Garcia received his BFA with a minor in Chicano studies from the University of New Mexico\, then went on to complete his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has shown in numerous national exhibitions and his artwork can be found in the collections of The National Hispanic Cultural Center\, National Museum of Mexican Art\, The Art Institute of Chicago. SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: Fiction (All Genres)
DESCRIPTION:6 pm\, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) \nDo you love reading good fiction—whether historical\, popular\, literary or sci-fi? Have you always wanted to write stories or novels? This eight week workshop is designed for writers who want to try writing fiction or those who need inspiration (and skills) to write more.  Inspired by fiction by Latinx writers\, you will write new work\, develop your narrative skills and receive valuable feedback for revision from your fellow writers. The workshop culminates with a public reading of your new work at the NHCC. \nInstructor:  Brenna Gomez is adjunct faculty at the University of New Mexico (UNM) where she teaches composition\, creative writing\, and in the freshmen learning community program. She received her MFA in fiction from UNM in 2016 and served as Editor in Chief of UNM’s national literary magazine\, Blue Mesa Review. Her fiction has appeared in Prairie Schooner and is forthcoming in StoryQuarterly. Brenna was the recipient of a 2017 Hedgebrook residency and the 2015 Hispanic writer award for the UNM Summer Writers’ Conference in Santa Fe. DESCRIPTION:8 pm \n\nIn their third performance at the NHCC\, the New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra (NMJLO) will again present a two-part show featuring an opening set of straight-up Latin jazz and a second set fusing folkloric rhythms with jazz elements. This year’s performance also will feature internationally renowned musician Frankie Vazquez\, along with César Bauvallet\, Doug Lawrence\, Bobby Shew\, Jackie Zamora and special guest Mike Williams\, formerly the lead trumpeter with the legendary\, 18-time Grammy®-winning Count Basie Orchestra and one of the most powerful high-note trumpet players ever. \n\n \nAs with their past shows\, NMJLO will showcase the extraordinary musical talents of artists who are now New Mexico residents\, while bringing in international guest artists to introduce audiences to traditional instrumentation and rhythms from Latin America and show how jazz fusion can provide a harmonious and exciting blend of ancestral and contemporary tones. \n\nEfrain “Frankie” Vazquez\, born in Salinas\, Puerto Rico\, began performing with his own band at his father’s restaurant at the age of 16\, as a conga player and then as a lead singer. A year later\, he had played in three orchestras around Puerto Rico\, and subsequently was invited to New York to perform on his first recording with Fuego 77. DESCRIPTION:5:30-7 pm\nNHCC Library\, History and Literary Arts Building \nOpera novices and aficionados are invited to three free interactive presentations about  “María de Buenos Aires\,” Astor Piazzola’s extraordinary tango-opera. Over three Wednesday evenings\, poet Valerie Martínez and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead you on a magical journey through the story\, the libretto\, the music\, and the staging of this evocative work\, which tells the story of María\, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires\, who sleepwalks through life\, death\, the afterlife\, and is reborn into “innocence.” The music\, by tango legend Ástor Piazzolla\, is based on “nuevo tango\,” a genre that Piazzolla revolutionized by infusing Argentine tango with elements of jazz and classical music. Those who attend all three sessions will receive a 50% discount on tickets to a performance of the show\, which runs from February 17-24 in the Journal Theater. \nDates and Topics: \nJanuary 23: Story\, Text\, and Context\, with Valerie Martínez \n\n Maria’s Argentina: old tango bars\, duende\, crafting the libretto\, signs and symbols\, magical realism.\n\nJanuary 30: The Music\, with Oliver Prezant \n\nAstor Piazzola and Tango Nuevo\, singing the story-setting the text\, the music of character and situation.\n\nFebruary 6: Maria on Stage – “Operita” or Opera? with Oliver Prezant \n\nDirector’s choice: blocking\, lighting\, sets\, costumes. As a core artist and Executive Director of Littleglobe\, Valerie worked in collaboration with the Santa Fe Opera Community Engagement Program to co-create two community-based operas: Memorylines: Voces de Nuestras Jornadas (2008) and the Santa Fe Bus Opera (2010). \nOliver Prezant has presented lectures and education programs for The Santa Fe Opera and Opera Southwest. He is the Music Director and conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra\, and the Artistic Advisor to the ArtWorks Program\, which provides arts education workshops for Santa Fe Public Schools students and teachers. He was on the faculty of the Contemporary Music Program at the College of Santa Fe and Santa Fe University of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Braceros Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nThis exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives\, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States\, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term\, primarily agricultural labor contracts. In 1942\, these workers came to remedy wartime production shortages by supplying much-needed labor during the early years of World War II.  The Bracero Program\, which derived its name from the Spanish word for a manual laborer\, “bracero” continued uninterrupted until 1964. During this extensive program\, 4.6 million contracts were signed\, with many individuals returning several times on different contracts\, making it the largest United States contract labor program. An examination of the exhibition images\, documents\, and artifacts contributes to our understanding of the lives of migrant workers in Mexico and the United States\, as well as our knowledge of immigration\, nationalism\, labor practices\, and race relations.\nThis event is free and open to the public

DESCRIPTION:Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. SUMMARY:La Canoa: Outside the Recipes: the Sustenance of Story
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nQuerencia as defined by Nuevomexicano scholar Juan Estevan Arellano is “love of place.”  Please join Dr. Patricia Perea as she presents a talk on the articulation of querencia to speak directly with the writings and experiences discussed in this lecture. These writings include Fabiola Cabeza de Baca’s The Good Life: New Mexico Traditions and Food (2005)\, Denise Chávez’s A Taco Testimony (2006) and The Pueblo Food Experience: Whole Food of Our Ancestors (2016).  Each of these works connect the texture of food\, the complex ties of family\, and the starkness of geography to the experience of ancestral memory and belonging. In addition to discussing these narratives\, Dr. Perea will also include her own experiences on the road home through community and story. \nDr. Patricia M. Perea currently teaches at the University of New Mexico in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies. She completed Ph.D. in American Studies in 2010. Her dissertation and graduate work focused on Mexican American autobiography and visual culture. She is a published poet and continues familial traditions that include weaving and traditional colcha embroidery. Her most recent project was the publication of the cookbook: The Pueblo Food Experience Cookbook: Whole Foods of Our Ancestors. Her future projects include continuing work on recent Mexican American autobiography and the histories and experiences of Mexican Americans in the Texas Panhandle. \nLa Canoa is a monthly series (August-May) that features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. \nThis event is free and open to the public \n

As a complement\, we invite you to participate in a story circle at the NHCC\, an opportunity to listen to each other about the state of our union. Who are we as a people? What touches our hearts and minds?What does democracy mean to us? \nThis event is a partnership between the NHCC and the US Department of Arts and Culture (USDAC)\, a grassroots action network inciting creativity to shape a culture of empathy\, equity\, and belonging.  Each year in January\, the USDAC hosts story circles in over 300 communities across the US.  With permission\, stories are uploaded to the People’s State of the Union (PSOTU) portal and become part of a “Poetic Address to the Nation” that is presented\, nationwide\, in March. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:NHCC Art Museum Closed for Renovations Jan. 28 to Feb. 25
DESCRIPTION:The NHCC Art Museum is getting a fabulous new entrance! In order to maintain safety and protect the artwork\, the museum will be closed between January 28 and February 25\, 2019. The Art Museum will reopen in time for the opening reception for its upcoming exhibition\, Que Chola!\, which will take place on Friday\, March 8\, 6-9 pm. The last few years have seen a surge in interest in the Chola as a figure and this exhibition will explore this dynamic from a feminist perspective through art and popular culture \nDuring the time the museum is closed\, visitors can still see Mundos de Mestizaje\, Frederico Vigil’s fresco depicting thousands of years of Hispanic and pre-Hispanic history\, every Saturday and Sunday from 12-5 pm or by scheduling an appointment by calling 505-383-4774.

SUMMARY:¡Baile! Rueda de Casino (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class
DESCRIPTION:6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork\, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. \n7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced – In order to participate in this class\, dancers must know how to keep time\, closed position calls\, dame\, enchufla\, and outside turn. \nDance classes taught by Sarita Streng\, Nick Babic\, Adam “El Caballo” Metcalf\, Larry Heard\, and Rueda 505 Friends. \nIn the meantime\, a fun video from Rueda Con Ritmo Dance Group who was just in Cuba Rueda con Ritmo with Jorge Luna Roque in Holguín.\nClick Here. \nThere is no need to pre-register.
