DESCRIPTION:7:15 pm to 8:15 pm\nStudents will learn basic flamenco technique and a short choreography.  No experience required; men and women of all ages and ability are welcome!\n$10 suggested donation \n \nBridgit (Brigida) Luján began studying dance at the age of two\, and earned a Master’s degree in dance from the University of New Mexico. After performing under the direction of Eva Encinias\, Lili del Castillo\, Pablo Rodarte\, and Antonio Hidalgo\, she joined Maria Benitez’ Estampa Española in 2000. She has traveled to Spain on numerous occasions to further her study of flamenco with many master teachers\, and has directed her own touring company since 2004. Over the past ten years\, she has performed in choreographed works in Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque and Festival Jerez. \nBridgit has taught at the University of New Mexico\, Santa Fe Community College\, Albuquerque Public Schools\, and National Conservatory of Flamenco\, and is a contributor to Dance Magazine. In 2013 she became the first and only American flamenco teacher to be an endorsed member of the Professional Association of Professors in Classical\, Ballet and Flamenco Dance of Madrid\, Spain (APDE). SUMMARY:Tour & Book Signing: Moving Forward\, Looking Back: Journeys Across the Old Spanish Trail
DESCRIPTION:4 pm to 6 pm \nJoin artist and curator Janire Nájera for an exhibition tour and book signing of Moving Forward\, Looking Back: Journeys Across the Old Spanish Trail\, which explores Spanish heritage in the United States Southwest via the Old Spanish Trail\, a route that linked the colonial outposts of New Mexico and California. The exhibition is presented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center and SPAIN Arts and Culture\, and supported by Wales Arts International.  This free event will take place at 4pm on April 2\, 2016\, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s History and Literary Arts Building.\nFree event \n \nAn artistic and genealogical project combining photography\, video and sound by artist and curator Janire Nájera\, this exhibition began in March 2014 with a road trip across the Southwest following the footsteps of trader Antonio Armijo\, who opened the route of the Old Spanish Trail between the states of New Mexico and California in the 19th century. The objective of Nájera’s trip was to meet\, interview\, and photograph Spanish descendants to explore how the traditions of the first settlers have merged with local cultures influencing the creation and identity of today’s pueblos and cities. The journey has been documented with the assistance of visual artist Matt Wright\, who took a range of panoramic images and time lapses to place the portraits within the environments in which they were captured. \nEach portrait in the exhibition has an associated\, taped conversation between Nájera and the protagonist of the picture. The portrayed talk about their experiences\, their memories\, their perception about being Hispanic descendants\, and how these origins influence in their lives.  In addition to the exhibition\, Nájera has recorded her experience along the route in a book\, combining the portraits and interviews of the Spanish descendants with academic essays about the legacy of Spanish language\, architecture\, gastronomy\, art\, religion\, and intangible heritage found in New Mexico and California\, once connected through the Old Spanish Trail.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Moving Forward\, Looking Back: Journeys Across the Old Spanish Trail
DESCRIPTION:6 pm to 8 pm \nJoin artist and curator Janire Nájera for the opening of her exhibition Moving Forward\, Looking Back: Journeys Across the Old Spanish Trail\, which explores Spanish heritage in the United States Southwest via the Old Spanish Trail\, a route that linked the colonial outposts of New Mexico and California. The exhibition is presented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center and SPAIN Arts and Culture\, and supported by Wales Arts International.  This free event will take place at 6pm on April 1\, 2016\, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s History and Literary Arts Building.\nFree event \n \nAn artistic and genealogical project combining photography\, video and sound by artist and curator Janire Nájera\, this exhibition began in March 2014 with a road trip across the Southwest following the footsteps of trader Antonio Armijo\, who opened the route of the Old Spanish Trail between the states of New Mexico and California in the 19th century. The objective of Nájera’s trip was to meet\, interview\, and photograph Spanish descendants to explore how the traditions of the first settlers have merged with local cultures influencing the creation and identity of today’s pueblos and cities. The journey has been documented with the assistance of visual artist Matt Wright\, who took a range of panoramic images and time lapses to place the portraits within the environments in which they were captured. \nEach portrait in the exhibition has an associated\, taped conversation between Nájera and the protagonist of the picture. The portrayed talk about their experiences\, their memories\, their perception about being Hispanic descendants\, and how these origins influence in their lives.  In addition to the exhibition\, Nájera has recorded her experience along the route in a book\, combining the portraits and interviews of the Spanish descendants with academic essays about the legacy of Spanish language\, architecture\, gastronomy\, art\, religion\, and intangible heritage found in New Mexico and California\, once connected through the Old Spanish Trail.

SUMMARY:Siembra\, Latino Theatre Season:  Yo Soy Joaquín!
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm—Thursday-Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday\nAn epic poem by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales famously associated with the Chicano movement of the 1960s\, Yo Soy Joaquín! is presented by Patricio Tlacaelel Trujillo y Fuentes in the form of a play. Joaquín speaks of the struggles the Chicano people have faced in trying to achieve economic justice and equal rights in the U.S.\, as well as in establishing their own identity.\n$18 w/ $3 discount for students\, seniors\, & NHCC members; $10 Thursday shows only \n \nFirst published in 1967\, the work is often referenced by writers\, researchers\, and historians as a pinnacle in the evolution of Chicano culture and literature\, and has been described as “the forerunner of the Chicano cultural renaissance.” It is often used in the classroom in teaching Chicano history\, as Gonzales captures the history of “La Raza Cósmica” (the late Mexican philosopher José Vasconcelos’ “cosmic\,” or new\, race) from the Aztec empire through contemporary Chicano culture. \nFor Trujillo y Fuentes\, who grew up in the 1960s in Pueblo\, Colorado\, and has known the poem since he was nine years old\, Yo Soy Joaquín! is his blood\, his heartbeat\, and his way of life. He remembers the Brown Berets marching in parades\, the dismissal from school on September 16th so that students could take place in the many public festivities celebrating Mexican independence\, and the pride he felt in seeing folkloric dancers\, mariachis\, and boxing matches in the parks. Yo Soy Joaquín! reflects his upbringing. He still cherishes its words\, and hopes that audiences will enjoy the theatrical revival of this great poem.

SUMMARY:23rd Annual César Chávez Day
DESCRIPTION:10:30 am – Marcha\n 12 pm – Fiesta \nJoin the 23rd annual César Chávez Day celebration\, with a march beginning at 10:30 am and ending at noon at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor.  Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community awards and exhibits\, children’s activities\, food\, a keynote speech by Carlos Marentes\, and live music by Las Cafeteras. \nCarlos Marentes has dedicated his life to improving the lives of farmworkers in New Mexico and Texas\, creating the organization Sin Fronteras in 1989 and subsequently opening the Border Farm Workers Center in El Paso. Las Cafeteras\, immigrant children from the streets of Los Angeles\, came together in 2008 to document the histories of their neighborhoods through music. The group fuses the Afro-Caribbean roots and vibrant energy of son jarocho with an edgy East Los Angeles alternative sound and a community-based political message\, creating a new urban folk sound and telling the stories of everyday people who are looking for love and fighting for justice.

DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nBorn in Tijuana\, Baja California to parents who were both pianists\, acoustic folk-pop singer/songwriter Vanessa Zamora became interested in the performing arts as a child. She began piano lessons at the age of eight\, and continued a year later with guitar and drums. While a student at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara\, she began uploading videos covering favorite songs by various artists on YouTube and social networking sites. When her melodic vocals and skilled musicianship attracted increasing attention\, she added her own original compositions.
