DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT! \n8 pm \nPussy Riot is a Russian all-female protest art collective based in Moscow. Founded in March 2011\, it had a variable membership of approximately 11 women. They gained global notoriety when five members of the group staged a performance inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 2012\, which led to the extended imprisonment of three of the members. \nIn 2014-2016\, Pussy Riot recorded and released several videos: “Putin Will Teach You To Love The Motherland\,”\, “I Can’t Breathe” (named for the last words that Eric Garner said as New York City Police held him to the ground in a chokehold)\, “Chaika\,” “Organs\,” and “Make America Great Again.” \nThis performance will be the world premiere of Pussy Riot Theatre\, who will perform the story of Pussy Riot.  The performance will be followed by a discussion and Q&A. \nApproximate time of event: two hours including intermission.\n$17\, $22\, $27 \n\nThe title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin us for the opening reception of ¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte! which celebrates the NHCC Art Museum’s growing permanent collection with a revitalized vibe and a brand new selection of works. This exhibition was a collaborative project as the entire NHCC Visual Arts staff and interns combed through the collection and worked together to decide which pieces should welcome in 2017. This sampling explores the contributions of these artists and how each work can serve as a reminder of the heart that thrives in strong and resilient communities. \nThe collection contains over 2\,500 artworks by Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, and Latina/o\, artists from around the globe most of which have been generously donated to the museum by artists and collectors. It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum exists to support and engage the work of these artists and share their creations and their stories with the broader community.\nFree community event

SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing: “Coyota in the Kitchen” by Anita Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nAnita Rodriguez is a New Mexican artist and writer.  Her father’s side goes back ten generations in her beloved Taos valley\, and her mother is a painter who came to Taos from Austin\, Texas.  Anita’s training as an artist began in childhood from her mother and extended to her formal training at the Colorado College. With many artist shows to her credit\, Coyota in the Kitchen is Anita’s first full-length book.  Coyota in the Kitchen is a book of stories and recipes\, introducing the reader to two eccentric families that would never have eaten together\, let alone exchanged recipes\, but for the improbable marriage of the author’s parents. Recalling the good and the terrible cooks in her family\, Anita also shares the complications of navigating a safe path among contradictory cultural perspectives. She takes us from the mountain villages of New Mexico in the 1940s to sipping mint juleps on the porch of a mansion in the South\, and on a prolonged pilgrimage to Mexico and back again to New Mexico. Accompanied by Rodríguez’s vibrant paintings―including scenes of people eating on fiesta nights and plastering an adobe church―Coyota in the Kitchen shows how food reflects the complicated family histories that shape our lives.\nFree public event

During the March event\, families (limited to 25 participants) will get a 30-minute museum tour focused on the NHCC Art Museum’s current exhibit Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage led by artist Rachel Muldez\, whose work you will see in the exhibit. Following the tour\, the whole family can create their own artwork with Rachel’s help in the Pete V. Muldez notes\, “The materials and objects that I make are always a visual reference to the larger ideas of existence as a continuum and the current expansion of our known universe.” \nArtist Statement: \n“The objects I collect end up in piles in my studio and await re-examination. It is not uncommon for me to observe and admire an object for years before I am aware of its full aesthetic potential. The sculptures that come out of this process resonate with evolving understanding of our world and the study of other worlds\, galaxies\, and nebulas.”

SUMMARY:La Canoa: Nuevomexicano Children's Literature: Bilingual and Bicultural in Both Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin panelists Amy Córdova\, artist and illustrator; and Enrique L. Lamadrid\, Gabriel Meléndez\, Anna M. Nogar\, and Michael Trujillo\, from the University of New Mexico for a discussion on Nuevomexicano children’s literature. Recent studies of popular cultural production often center on forms intended for adults. This roundtable will consider a genre designed for children that involves adult interlocutors and mentors. The panelist discussion will center on bilingual\, culturally informed children’s books that treat topics relating to New Mexican history\, oral literature and tropes. \n \nAs Mexican American scholar Domino Perez has noted in her study of children’s literature depicting the legend of La Llorona\, such works exert powerful influence beyond the apparent simplicity of text and image.  She notes that “[stories about La Llorona] are now being used to empower and instill cultural pride as well as a sense of cultural history” (193)\, further commenting that “Through the use of La Llonorna folklore\, children are not only being prepared to read critically their own stories\, but also to read other stories about their culture” (179).  The panelists see the texts they have collectively created in this light. This discussion is aimed at articulating the unique positionality of a literature that serves a distinct role in forming future nuevomexicano readers and citizens\, for as Perez concludes\, “for marginalized people whose stories have been written over or displaced\, the fate of certain stories can be tied to the future of the people.” (179) \nChildren’s books to be addressed by the discussants include those to which they have contributed: \n\nAmadito and the Hero Children: Amadito y los Niños Héroes. DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out! \n7 pm \nThis concert\, celebrating the 65th anniversary of Pimentel Guitars and presented in partnership with Pimentel Music\, is a tribute to the late master guitar makers Lorenzo Pimentel and Agustin Pimentel. The ninth in the NHCC’s Pimentel Music Series\, it will feature acclaimed guitarists in genres ranging from classical to popular to jazz to folk to flamenco\, with a line-up including Mariachi Tenampa\, Gustavo Pimentel\, Dan Lambert and the Creatures of Habit\, Ambrose Rivera with Trio Bravo\, Harry Irizarry\, John Truitt\, James Crabtree\, Cali Hughes\, Gerardo Pérez Capdevila\, the Cibola Quartet\, Up a Creek\, Dennis Hatfield\, Ken Gilman\, Jerry Robbins and the Mungos\, the Out to Nowhere Jazz Band\, and the Watermelon Mountain Jug Band. DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 3 pm \nCarlos will share insight on his work and process while guiding visitors through the exhibition\, Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage\, that showcases his elaborate collages spanning the last 27 years. Each piece is rich in detail and a myriad of mythological\, literary\, and art historical references that play hide and seek within the compositions. \nThis special tour is free with NHCC Museum admission purchase. \n \n  \nAbout Carlos’ work: \nCarlos Quinto Kemm creates stunning painted collage interpretations of the dream-like and mystical. His use of color\, texture\, and dimension lure the eye deep into the image. Each scene is rich in detail as well as a myriad of mythological\, literary\, and art historical references that play hide and seek within the composition. The complexity of his work is evidence of his extensive visual vocabulary and passion for collage which he notes is a useful medium to “stimulate imaginative awakenings.” \n“Allied to visionary and mystical pathways\, my work feeds my questing need to make sense of life’s purpose. DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nPalenke Soultribe (PST)\, a live electronic production collective based in Los Angeles\, deconstructs Afro-Colombian rhythms and blends them with modern beats\, catchy bass lines\, and synthesized arpeggios. Always pushing the envelope visually and conceptually\, the group represents a new generation of Colombian musicians ready to break all the rules.
