SUMMARY:Call for Involvement: Our Truth Project
DESCRIPTION:The National Hispanic Cultural Center is taking on a project\, supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation\, with the goal of giving value and meaning to the lived stories of our New Mexico community; bringing heightened awareness of racial divides and inequalities; and helping navigate ways to heal and move forward together through art. \n \nOur overarching plan is to facilitate community dialogues and then commission artists to share these stories through devised works\, presented in meaningful and discussion-inducing ways. The works created from stories told by the community would include theatre\, music\, dance\, visual arts\, circus arts\, poetry\, literary arts\, film\, mixed media and more—all with the intention and aim of validating community experiences and making them accessible and audible for an audience not otherwise engaged in race equity issues. The project will run from 2018-2019\, with 2017 serving as our planning year. \nAs part of the planning process\, we are gathering a list of people who might want to join us in the project\, in varying capacities. DESCRIPTION:8:30 am – 7 pm—Thursday & Friday\n8:30 am – 4 pm—Saturday \nThe University of New Mexico is hosting an interdisciplinary environmental justice public forum\, “Decolonizing Nature: Resistance\, Resilience\, Revitalization\,” which includes a four-day interdisciplinary conference from April 19 through April 22 at the NHCC; a companion exhibition at 516 ARTS from April 15 through April 29; a film screening at the UNM Art Museum on April 18; and a community event\, “Abrazos: A Community Celebration of Environmental Justice\,” at the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge\, organized by conference partners Friends of the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge and the Los Jardines Institute\, on Earth Day\, April 22. \nAll events are free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Pollution and waste from this activity also is skewed in its impact\, in this case to the substantial detriment of poor and marginalized people\, indigenous communities\, and biotic life. Capital’s colonization of nature has brought us to our current moment of grave ecological peril—climate change\, Sixth Extinction\, and other human-caused environmental crises that cumulatively and rapidly degrade Earth’s life-sustaining ecological fabric. \nDecolonizing nature has thus become an urgent priority if we are to progress toward a just and sustainable Earth for all living beings. How do we resist further ecological devastation? How do we achieve resilience in times of stress? How do we revitalize affected ecological habitats and communities? The UNM forum will address these and related issues. \nThe conference features 33 speakers from the fields of art\, architecture\, humanities\, religion and science\, and grassroots activists from across the US as well as Mexico\, Canada and Ecuador. It is designed to foster discussions on integration of knowledge across disciplines\, practices across cultures\, and social-environmental movements across geographies. \nThe conference and the associated programming are sponsored by the Land Arts of the American West and Art & Ecology programs in the Department of Art at the University of New Mexico\, in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, 516 ARTS\, Friends of the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge\, Los Jardines Institute\, and the Santa Fe Art Institute. DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin Rebecca Blum Martinez\, professor of bilingual and ESL education in the College of Education at the University of New Mexico\, for a talk on the history and present state of bilingual education in New Mexico. \nBlum Martinez has worked with and advocated for bilingual students and their families in New Mexico since 1975. Bilingual education has been a contentious educational reform since its inception in the late 1960s. New Mexico\, in 1969\, was one of the first states to embrace Spanish/English bilingual education. The struggle for Spanish language rights has been a constant preoccupation in the state since the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. The talk will highlight the many initiatives undertaken in public education in New Mexico\, beginning in the 1960s\, to ensure children’s linguistic rights. \nThe La Canoa Legacy Series features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. Like la canoa—referring in New Mexican Spanish to several utilitarian objects used to receive and transport people and resources and thus provide a service to the community—these talks are meant to serve the community by presenting new or overlooked information about our region to interested audiences. We want them to transport us to new understandings of our region and its rich cultural and historical inheritance\, and to move the conversation back and forth in rich dialogue between presenters and audience members.\nFree public event

DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nSinger-songwriter Rhiannon Giddens is the co-founder of the Grammy award-winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops\, in which she also plays banjo and fiddle. She began gaining recognition as a solo artist when she stole the show at the T Bone Burnett–produced Another Day\, Another Time concert at New York City’s Town Hall in 2013. The elegant bearing\, prodigious voice\, and fierce spirit that brought the audience to its feet that night is also abundantly evident on Giddens’ critically acclaimed solo debut\, the Grammy-nominated album Tomorrow Is My Turn\, which masterfully blends American musical genres like gospel\, jazz\, blues\, and country\, showcasing her extraordinary emotional range and dazzling vocal prowess.\n$27\, $32\, $37 \n \nGiddens’ follow-up album\, Freedom Highway\, was released in February 2017. It includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote\, along with a traditional song and two civil rights era songs\, “Birmingham Sunday\,” and the Staple Singers’ well-known “Freedom Highway\,” from which the album takes its name. \nGiddens’ recent televised performances include The Late Show\, Austin City Limits\, Later…with Jools Holland\, and both CBS Saturday and Sunday Morning\, among numerous other notable media appearances. Defending the city of Puebla\, the army of General Ignacio Zaragoza\, numbering around 2\,000 men\, won an unlikely victory against a supposedly unbeatable French army of over 6\,000—at that time the world’s largest and most powerful army. French forces were withdrawn from the country six years later; the legendary battle for freedom and for Mexico is celebrated to this day. DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nDzul Dance fuses dance with aerial arts\, contortion\, and acrobatics to communicate indigenous pre-Hispanic\, Mexican and Latin culture and create bridges between contemporary art and historical heritage. Artistic director Javier Dzul grew up in the jungles of southern Mexico performing Mayan ritual dance until the age of 16; he has since performed with Ballet Nacional de México\, Ballet Folklórico de México\, the Martha Graham Dance Company\, Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble\, and American Indian Dance Theater. DESCRIPTION:10:30 am to 12:00 pm \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to offer children’s programming on the first Saturday morning of every month. This is a fun and engaging artist-led family program.  Families (limited to 25 participants) get a 30-minute museum tour focused on an art form\, source inspiration\, artist or type of material.  Following the tour\, the whole family can create their own artwork in the Pete V.
