This six-week series is a project of City Lore\, a cultural center for the arts and humanities based in New York City. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of NEH’s Community Conversations initiative\, and features documentary film screenings and scholar-led discussions designed to encourage an informed discussion of immigration issues against the backdrop of our immigration history. \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is one of 24 organizations selected nationwide to participate in the Becoming American project. The scholar/moderator for the screenings and discussions at the Center is Dr. Gabriel Sanchez\, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico. The theme for Unit Six\, presented on August 23\, is “Immigration and Popular Culture.” \nAs much an immigration history as a culinary detective story\, this ebullient documentary uses the ubiquitous Americanized dish\, General Tso’s Chicken\, as a lens onto a larger story of immigration\, adaptation\, and innovation to American popular culture. Early on\, the film poses the question\, “If Chinese Americans comprise only 1% of the U.S. population\, why are there Chinese restaurants in almost every city across America?” The filmmakers seek the answer in a journey through the Chinese American experience from the Gold Rush and the building of the railroads to the age of Panda Express. His articles have appeared in publications including American Legion and War History Online. Recognized by both the Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin and the El Paso Museum of History for his groundbreaking work on Company E\, he also specializes in genealogical research\, Mexican American history\, and World War II studies. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nThis historical documentary\, shedding light on the current debate over immigration reform and the use of “guest workers” in American agriculture\, examines what was known as the Bracero Program—a system put in place from 1942 to 1964 to recruit Mexican farm laborers for temporary work in the United States. The film features testimony from surviving braceros as well as these workers’ family members and descendants\, along with commentary from featured experts and extensive archival material. Since the beginning of the 9th century\, when the tomb was discovered\, Santiago de Compostela has been a pan-European place of peregrination. The city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985\, and the European Union declared the Camino de Santiago to be the first European Cultural Itinerary in 1987. According to Catholic tradition\, completing a pilgrimage on the Camino\, some 500 miles along the major routes\, assures forgiveness of one’s sins. Beth is honored to perform & collaborate with two of New Mexico’s most talented\, experienced and versatile musicians who will weave together the well-traveled sounds of Sefarad: Ronaldo Baca will be singing and playing the oud and guitar and Javier Saume Mazzei will be performing on a variety of percussion instruments including the cajon and doumbek. Beth Cohen will be singing and playing violin\, guitar and Macedonian tambura. Between 5\,000 and 7\,000 Jews managed to reach the Spanish border fleeing Europe by crossing the Lleida Pyrenees to Spain. This valuable documentary honors the memory of those who fled from persecution and those who helped make that possible. \n \n8 pm – “Your wishes in heaven (Tu boca en los cielos)”. NM Premier. Rachey Muyal\, an 87-year-old descendant of Sephardim expelled from Spain in 1492 delivers a handwritten letter to the tombs of Catholic Monarchs at Granada in which she confesses to those responsible for the expulsion that the Jews do not have any resentment against them. The letter takes us on a delightful journey covering 500 years of coexistence enjoyed by the Jews in the lands of the Maghreb (Morocco\, Tunisia\, & Algeria).
