DESCRIPTION:10:30 am \nFrancelle Alexander will offer a presentation titled\, “Albuquerque’s North Valley: Alameda & Los Ranchos.”  This presentation is from her book by the same name.  Her book will be on sale after her program for $25. This is the second volume\, which chronicles the history of the village of Alameda and the villages of the Elena Gallegos Land Grant including Los Ranchos.  The modern village of Los Ranchos encompasses much of the North Valley today\, and its incorporation as a village is unique in the Middle Rio Grande Valley.  The community of Alameda\, separated from much of the Alameda Land Grant and Corrales west of the Rio Grande early in its history\, is the entry point to the North Valley.  Because much of its history is biographical a separate chapter is included on the lives of two wealthy families\, the Armijos and Yrisarris\, the ricos of the North Valley.

SUMMARY:Performance in the Museum With Artist Eric-Paul Riege
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 3 pm \nJoin us for a performance in Because It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM with Eric-Paul Riege! Eric-Paul was born in 1994 in Gallup\, New Mexico and lives there now. He is a weaver and performance artist who also creates what he calls\, “wearable art”. Eric-Paul notes\, “I am inspired by being present through my mind\, body and beliefs. That happens through remembering my history and my people and my family—how it has gifted me my identity and worldview and craft.” Eric-Paul has two weavings on display in the exhibition and they are part of a broader performance piece that will take place in the museum on June 2nd at 2 pm. Altogether\, the work is called let the Holy ppl watch over U and Me\, weaving dance (fig. 2.) \nThis event is free with the purchase of museum admission.

SUMMARY:Interview with a Mexican
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm  \nThis event will be a stage reading of Interview with a Mexican\, based on conversations with Gustavo Arellano\, columnist and author of Ask a Mexican and Taco USA\, as adapted for the stage by Anthony J. Garcia. \nA carnival of conversations and random perspectives about what it means to be a Mexican\, inside or outside the US.  Over the years\, Gustavo Arellano has established himself as the authority on what it is to be a Mexican in his newspaper column Ask a Mexican. He challenged “gabachos” (his word) to come out of the closet and ask the obvious\, ignorant\, and sometime racist questions\, which he met with derision and insult\, but also with a tremendous amount of information. The ultimate Chicano nerd has placed his trust in making the transformation of his writings three-dimensional in the hands of Tony Garcia\, Executive Artistic Director of Su Teatro in Denver. A 46-year veteran of sarcasm and cultural enlightenment\, Garcia is inspired by the character of Gold Hat from the movie The Treasure of the Sierra Madre\, a role long viewed as a stereotypical portrayal of the Mexican bandit.  However\, what is often overlooked is the sly genius of Adolfo Bedoya\, the actor who played Gold Hat. \nThe play\, with musical accompaniment\, is set to open in September at Su Teatro\, and will return to the NHCC in its full version in November after a brief stop at MACLA (Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americano) in San Jose\, CA. An additional performance is scheduled at Colorado State University in Pueblo\, CO\, with other stops pending. \nThe reading is part of a process of development funded by the National Performance Network\, which has as commissioning partners Su Teatro\, MACLA\, Colorado State University-Pueblo and the NHCC. \nParticipating actors include Lorenzo Gonzales\, Chair of the Acting Department at Naropa University in Boulder\, CO; Manuel Roybal\, former Su Teatro company member and now a resident of Albuquerque; and the legendary Loren Poole\, aka Lynette “La Burqueña.”

DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nSon Como Son bills itself as “Salsa\, Cuban Style.” Founded in 1993\, it is unquestionably one of Albuquerque’s longest-standing and most popular salsa ensembles. They play regularly to packed audiences comprising highly animated and dedicated salseros at the NM Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars series; at the Cooperage; and at special concerts\, such as those at the Telluride Jazz Festival. They are directed by renowned trombonist\, vocalist\, percussionist\, composer\, and arranger César Bauvallet\, who moved from Havana\, Cuba to Albuquerque in 1992. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Fountain Courtyard that features live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. The NHCC’s newest on-campus restaurant—La Fonda del Bosque—will be offering unique themed dinners before each concert and providing a cash bar and tapas throughout the night. \n$11 in Advance\, $14 Day of Show \n \n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities. Learning about the history and culture of the dances will be included. Some dances that may be taught include salsa\, bachata\, merengue\, Mexican ballet folklorico\, chachacha\, casino\, and more. No experience necessary.\nInstructors: Evelyn Mora and Norma Quiñones \n6 pm to 7 pm Rueda de Casino Dance Class (Beginning and Intermediate) – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. The music veers from eerie lullabies to full church-organ portentousness…. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nJune screenings in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series initiate Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on our Immigration Experience. This six-week series is a project of City Lore\, a cultural center for the arts and humanities based in New York City. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of NEH’s Community Conversations initiative\, and features documentary film screenings and scholar-led discussions designed to encourage an informed discussion of immigration issues against the backdrop of our immigration history. \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is one of 24 organizations selected nationwide to participate in the Becoming American project. The scholar/moderator for the screenings and discussions at the Center is Dr. Gabriel Sanchez\, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico. The theme for Unit One\, presented on June 14\, is “The Century of Immigration.” \nEpisode 4\, “The Power and the People\,” of New York: A Documentary Film examines the great wave of immigration that began in the late 19th century\, tripled New York’s population\, and transformed the city and the nation. SUMMARY:La Canoa: The Meaning of Place—Stories of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Theodore Jojola\, University of New Mexico Distinguished Professor and Regents’ Professor in the Community and Regional Planning Program\, School of Architecture and Planning\, as he presents a talk on community\, identity\, and resilience. Since time immemorial\, people have attached their identities to the places that they have settled. Community embodies the intersection of people and the natural resources that sustain them. That relationship is expressed by their worldview.  A worldview describes the social and spiritual attachment to place. I will draw from these relationships to show examples of how communities have met these challenges. In addition to highlighting NM Indigenous communities that have persevered in time and space\, we will examine contemporary examples of such place-making as exemplified in the histories of the Albuquerque Indian School and the Bataan Death March. \nTheodore (Ted) Jojola\, PhD\, is a Distinguished Professor and Regents’ Professor in the Community and Regional Planning Program\, School of Architecture and Planning\, University of New Mexico (UNM). He is the founder and Director of the Indigenous Design + Planning Institute.  iD+Pi works with tribal communities throughout the Southwest region as well as internationally by facilitating culturally informed approaches to community development. He is actively involved in major research projects on Indian education\, Indigenous community development and architecture. He is co-editor of two books—The Native American Philosophy of V.F. Cordova entitled How It Is (U. of Arizona Press\, 2007) and Reclaiming Indigenous Planning (McGill-Queens University Press\, 2013).  A third book is in the works\, Contemporary Indigenous Architecture: Local Traditions\, Global Winds (working title\, UNM Press).  He is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Isleta.

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Lone Piñon and Lenore Armijo
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLone Piñon is an acoustic conjunto from Northern New Mexico whose music celebrates the diversity and integrity of their region’s cultural roots. Using violins\, accordion\, quinta huapangera\, bajo sexto\, guitarrón\, tololoche and vocals in Spanish\, English\, Nahuatl\, and P’urépecha\, the group has revived and updated the Chicano string band style that once flourished in New Mexico\, bringing a devoted musicianship to Northern New Mexican polkas and chotes\, virtuosic Mexican huapango and son calentano\, and classic borderlands conjunto. \nGrowing up in New Mexico\, Lenore Armijo was exposed to a unique blend of music including jazz\, ranchera and classical. Her own style has propelled her career onto various stages around New Mexico\, and more recently in films such as “Descansos” and “Letters to Our Daughters.” Her recent appearances on stage include the live New Mexico Tour of “Bless Me Ultima\,” written by Rudolfo Anaya\, and “Living Purgatory\,” written by Patricia Crespin. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Fountain Courtyard that features live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nMusic has always been an integral part of the history of Barelas\, and many of New Mexico’s well-known musicians have come from this community. In 2012\, the NHCC partnered with the Barelas Coffee House to present the Rock ‘n’ Soul Show and Revue\, then in its seventh year.  This event\, showcasing great rock\, soul\, R&B and New Mexico rancherita tunes from the 1960s through the 1980s\, recreated the touring shows performed in legendary Albuquerque venues during those years and provided a forum for the reunion of some of the city’s finest musicians from that era. In 2014 the Barelas Coffee House presented Oh What A Night\, and in 2015 Cruizin’ Central\, to sold-out houses; these were unique opportunities for family and friends to come together and listen\, sing along\, and dance to music from the 1950s through the 1980s. In 2016 and 2017\, the first and second Remember the Time dance concerts brought back memories of happy times at venues such as the Civic Auditorium\, Leo’s La Roc\, and the Far West. This year’s concert\, focusing on more recent decades\, once again celebrates life\, love\, and music at its best with great Albuquerque musicians who have been entertaining New Mexico audiences over the years.  Featured bands are Picoso\, Fat City\, and Soul Divine\, three dynamic local dance bands with dedicated fan bases. \nOpened in 1978 as a precursor to the ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood\, the Barelas Coffee House is itself an iconic Albuquerque venue and a popular local meeting place as well as a tourist attraction.  The NHCC is once again entering into a presenting partnership with the Barelas Coffee House\, through owner Michael Anthony Gonzales\, for the 3rd annual Remember the Time dance concert.\n$27 w/ $2 off for NHCC members

DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nSalud y Sabor\, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network\, Street Food Institute\, and the NHCC\, is a free evening of food\, art\, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition\, cooking\, healthy lifestyles\, and culture. \nOnce a month\, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh\, locally grown ingredients\, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults\, health screenings\, and live entertainment. An emphasis is placed on exploring traditional Hispanic dishes\, providing basic information/free screenings from local Western and alternative health practitioners\, and creating a vibrant atmosphere with art activities and live music. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nCentral Features and the NHCC are proud to welcome Julio César Morales to Albuquerque as part of the 2018 Visiting Curator Series! \nABOUT JULIO CESAR MORALES\nEmploying a range of media and visual strategies\, artist and curator Julio César Morales explores issues of migration\, underground economies\, and labor on personal and global scales. He is currently curator of visual arts at Arizona State University Art Museum; was the founder and director for Queens Nails Annex\, an artist-run project space in San Francisco from 2003 to 2012; adjunct professor at The San Francisco Art Institute from 2000 to 2012; and associate professor in Curatorial Studies at The California College for the Arts from 1999 to 2010. He is currently curator at Arizona State University Art Museum/Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts\, Tempe\, AZ. \nMorales is an advisor and writer for The San Francisco Quarterly Art Magazine; from 2008 to 2012 he was adjunct curator for visual arts at Yerba Buena Center for The Arts in San Francisco; and was a contributing curator for the Japanese pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale. \nHe has curated more than 100+ exhibitions to date. Highlights as a curator include solo exhibitions with Superflex\, Suzanne Lacy\, Mary Kelly\, Nina Beier\, Pedro Reyes\, Miguel Calderon\, Yoshua Okon\, Koki Tanaka\, Pablo Helguera and retrospective exhibitions of George Kuchar and Miguel Angel Rios with group exhibitions including Bay Area Now Triennale and The Jumex Collection. Morales has received grants for curatorial projects from The Rockefeller Foundation\, National Endowment for The Arts\, Jumex Foundation\, and the Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation amoungst others. Morales’ artwork has been shown nationally and internationally. \nMorales’s visit is organized in partnership with ICI\, with financial support provided by The Fulcrum Fund and The FUNd at the Albuquerque Community Foundation. \nABOUT VCS\nThe inaugural 2018 Visiting Curator Series brings to Albuquerque a select group of curators working in the American Southwest region who will conduct studio visits with multiple local artists\, as well as offer mentorship opportunities. As part of the Visiting Curator Series\, each curator will give a public talk about their practice\, including the artists and the sociopolitical contexts that shape their work. \nVCS is organized by Central Features Contemporary Art and curator Nancy Zastudil in partnership with Independent Curators International (ICI). Funded in part by Common Field\, Fulcrum Fund\, and the FUNd at the Albuquerque Community Foundation.
