DESCRIPTION:6: 30 pm \nPRESENTER: Daybert Linares Díaz \nSYNOPSIS: In 1999\, the release of a documentary “Buena Vista Social Club\,” which depicted the process of recording the album of the same title two years prior\, became a worldwide phenomenon. After decades of partial musical obscurity due to the U.S. embargo on the island\, the international audience was once again regaled with the sounds of a pre-1959\, pre-communist Cuba. For many U.S. people\, Buena Vista Social Club signified a return to those times\, a memory of a “lost” island and rhythms—both also lost in time. \nBuena Vista Social Club’s international success and critical acclaim\, however\, bypassed entire generations of Cuban music. Indeed\, the album focused mainly on rhythms that had been produced between the 1930s and 50s. But what happened between 1959\, the year Fidel Castro took power\, and the advent of the second millennium? What music were Cuban musicians producing during this time? What new rhythms were developed? How did the music of Cuba evolve during all these years? And more importantly\, was Buena Vista Social Club an accurate representation of the contemporary music in Cuba at the time that it was released? This presentation is an invitation to explore these questions\, to listen to music\, and to learn what Cuba has produced\, musically speaking\, beyond Buena Vista Social Club.

DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nAugust screenings in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series conclude Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on our Immigration Experience. This six-week series is a project of City Lore\, a cultural center for the arts and humanities based in New York City. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of NEH’s Community Conversations initiative\, and features documentary film screenings and scholar-led discussions designed to encourage an informed discussion of immigration issues against the backdrop of our immigration history. \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is one of 24 organizations selected nationwide to participate in the Becoming American project. The scholar/moderator for the screenings and discussions at the Center is Dr. Gabriel Sanchez\, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico. The theme for Unit Six\, presented on August 23\, is “Immigration and Popular Culture.” \nAs much an immigration history as a culinary detective story\, this ebullient documentary uses the ubiquitous Americanized dish\, General Tso’s Chicken\, as a lens onto a larger story of immigration\, adaptation\, and innovation to American popular culture. Early on\, the film poses the question\, “If Chinese Americans comprise only 1% of the U.S. population\, why are there Chinese restaurants in almost every city across America?” The filmmakers seek the answer in a journey through the Chinese American experience from the Gold Rush and the building of the railroads to the age of Panda Express. On-air historians\, chefs\, writers\, and enthusiasts provide accounts of the history of Chinese migration to America; the discriminatory 1880s Chinese Exclusion Act that forced emigrants out of the labor market and into small business ownership; the modification of “exotic” Chinese cuisine for American tastes; and the role of Chinese American community organizations in the dissemination of restaurants to the far corners of the nation to avoid competition and discrimination on the West Coast.\n2014; Ian Cheney; English; 57 minutes; not rated.\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

Holtby will present “Lest We Forget\, World War 1 and New Mexico.” The title of Mr. Holtby’s presentation is from his recently published book by the same name\, which will be available for purchase at the meeting for $33. \nMore than 14\,000 New Mexicans served in uniform during World War 1 and thousands more contributed to the American home front. Yet today in New Mexico\, as elsewhere the Great War and the lives it affected are scarcely remembered. Lest We Forget confronts that amnesia. The first detailed study to describe New Mexico’s wartime mobilization\, its soldiers combat experiences\, and its veterans postwar lives. The book offers a poignant account of the profound changes these Americans underwent both during and after the war. \nDavid V. Holtby is the author of “Forty Seventh Star: New Mexico’s Struggle for Statehood: and has served as Associate Director and Editor in Chief of Universisty of New Mexico Press. SUMMARY:La Canoa: Mulattos of Cochiti: Caste in Spanish New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Deputy State Historian Rob Martinez\, as he examines the role of racial mixing\, identity\, and the categorizing of humans living in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. The approach will be through the lens of the casta\, or caste system. Historical research\, genealogy\, and DNA all converge to provide a clearer understanding of Hispano roots in New Mexico\, as well as in Latino-Meso America and Hispanic Europe. \nDeputy State Historian Rob Martinez is a native New Mexican born and raised in Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with a B.B.A. in International Business Management\, Rob went on to pursue his interest in New Mexican culture and history at UNM\, earning an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on church\, cultural\, and social practices of the Spanish Colonial period in New Mexico. Mr. Martinez worked for fourteen years as a research historian for the Sephardic Legacy Project\, scouring civil and church archives in New Mexico\, Mexico\, Spain\, France\, Italy\, Cuba\, and Puerto Rico\, analyzing documents for a research and publishing project about the Crypto-Jewish phenomenon in New Mexico and the Caribbean. Rob has presented papers and lectures on his research at the University of New Mexico as well as history conferences throughout the southwestern United States. He has also spoken to historical groups in New Mexico such as the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico\, the Albuquerque Historical Society\, and the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies about research methodology\, unique findings\, New Mexico Hispanic culture\, and general History of New Mexico. Mr. Martinez is also a folk musician\, performing and promoting New Mexican Hispanic musical traditions for the past twenty years with his brother Lorenzo and their father Roberto Martinez in the group Los Reyes de Albuquerque. With his musical family\, he has performed in all parts of New Mexico\, and on multiple occasions has presented music and New Mexican culture at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington\, D.C.\, the NEA’s National Heritage Fellowship Awards\, and also at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

They will be available at the gate starting at 4 pm. Grounds open at 4 pm for performances that will start at 6:20 pm and run until at least 11:40 pm  \n¡Globalquerque!\, New Mexico’s 14th Annual World Music & Culture Celebration returns to the National Hispanic Cultural Center on September 21 and 22\, 2018. This year’s festival will bring three stages of music from five continents over two nights. Relax in the intimate courtyard setting of the Fountain Stage\, enjoy larger bands in the state-of-the-art 691-seat Journal Theater\, or dance to groove heavy world music on the plaza’s outdoor Festival Stage. Films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival. \nAlma: Arte\, Legado y Medio Ambiente/Spirit: Art\, Legacy and Environment\nThis U.S. premiere is a musical-visual journey to the remote area of La Ribeira Sacra in Galicia\, Spain\, where four musicians participated in an arts residency that allowed them to tune into the ancient forests and steep river canyons before performing before an audience in a 12th century Benedictine monastery. ALMA is a mobile residency program that facilitates experiences for artists to co-create in direct connection with nature. 2017; directed by Victor Hugo Espejo; Spanish with English subtitles; 14 minutes; not rated. \nHombre de Barro: Wapapura en el Amazonas/Man of Clay: Wapapura in the Amazon This documentary follows the Wapapura crew on a journey into the Colombian Amazon rainforest to record the debut album of Bogota-based trio Hombre de Barro. These three musicians\, who have all played prominent roles in other Colombian bands\, are leaders in the movement to research\, promote\, and re-engage ancient musical styles from the Americas. The journey moves from India to Spain\, dramatizing the nomadic nature of Romany culture and the variety of conditions in which the Romany people live\, and takes place over a year’s time\, from summer through fall and winter to spring. Via song and dance\, young and old celebrate essential cultural values that have developed over countless generations and in diverse countries.
