DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nJoin us for the opening lecture of the La Canoa: Legacy Talks 2017-2018 season for an exploration of a late 1800’s travel diary through New Mexico and into Chihuahua\, Mexico.  Joy Poole\, Deputy State Librarian\, New Mexico State Library will take us through a three years journey with Dr. Rowland Willard\, a physician\, who traveled the Santa Fe Trail to Taos\, NM in 1825.  Hear how the Fourth of July was celebrated in Taos. Learn how an American doctor practiced medicine on the Mexican frontier.  How did the Chief of Taos Pueblo pay the doctor for his services?  Learn some of the 19th century ailments of his patients.   Some of his patients included the ranchers around Cordova\, the Padres and their wives\, and the Taos Alcalde.  Dr. Willard shares many first impressions of Hispano culture including fandangos\, Catholic faith\, his host families and his first meal in Taos.  How did the composition of companions travelling with him from Missouri to Mexico change?  He arrived in Chihuahua during a measles epidemic.  Compare and contrast his first impressions of the Mexican frontier in Taos with his final impressions of the Mexican frontier in Chihuahua before returning to the United States in 1828. \n  \nFree Community Event

SUMMARY:Second Cervantes Drawing and Painting Contest for New Mexico Students
DESCRIPTION:All drawings and paintings must be sent by 5 pm on November 27 \nInstituto Cervantes\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and the Spanish Resource Center are organizing a student drawing and painting contest to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the creation of Pablo Picasso’s Guernica and to celebrate the exhibition El Prado in Santa Fe—the U.S. debut of 92 full-scale reproductions of some of the greatest masterpieces from Madrid’s Museo del Prado. \nAll school districts in New Mexico are encouraged to participate. Students in three age categories\, ages 6-8\, 9-11\, and 12-15 are invited to submit original drawings depicting any subject matter relating to great Spanish or Latin American painters—Pablo Picasso\, Salvador Dali\, Joan Miró\, Diego Rivera\, Frida Kahlo\, etc. Teachers are encouraged to introduce any of these artists in their classrooms. The drawings and paintings will be on display at the NHCC from December 9\, 2017 through April 7\, 2018.\nFree public event \n \nSubmissions must be original artworks 17” x 11”\, either horizontal or vertical. Each submission must have the following information on the back:\n• Contestant’s first and last name;\n• Contestant’s age;\n• Name of school;\n• Contact telephone number and e-mail. \nAll drawings and paintings must be sent by 5 pm on November 27 to:\nInstituto Cervantes (Drawing Contest)\n1701 Fourth Street SW\nAlbuquerque\, NM 87102\nArtwork will not be returned. \nA special grand prize of $500 will be awarded\, with $300 going to the student and $200 to the school. First\, second\, and third prizes in each age category will also include monetary awards for both the student and the school ($200 for the student and $100 for the school for first place; $100 for the student and $100 for the school for second place; $100 for the student for third place). Come meet the band and here them talk about their music. \nFounded in 1967 by students at Santiago’s Universidad Técnica del Estado\, Inti-Illimani has performed worldwide for hundreds of thousands of fans\, collaborated with legendary artists\, earned awards and honors for activism as well as musicianship\, and produced one of Latin America’s richest discographies. On tour during the 1973 military coup in Chile\, they remained in Italy in de facto exile until 1988\, touring Chile days after they were no longer banned from the country and returning permanently in 1990. The time in Europe added elements of other musical genres to their music\, creating a fusion of folk/Latin/contemporary classical/avant-garde/world music played on over 30 instruments. They have lectured extensively on Latin American folk/indigenous music\, culture\, and social change\, and founded and teach at an arts-centric school in one of Santiago’s poorest neighborhoods. Still including one of the original founders\, the group celebrates 50 years of performing music grounded in their beloved Chile\, yet continuing to reach across time\, space\, and nations. DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLos Pleneros de la 21 (“LP21”)\, an Afro-Puerto Rican bomba and plena ensemble featuring musicians\, dancers\, and artisans\, returns to New Mexico for a four-day National Performance Network (NPN) residency\, Redobles de Cultura Boricua\, which will include workshops and other activities as well as the group’s concert at the NHCC.  LP21’s complex\, multi-part vocal harmonies\, set to the rhythms of hand-held plena drums and barrel-shaped bomba drums\, resurrect the African-rooted bomba and plena musical styles of Puerto Rico. Billboard praised the band for its “exhilaratingly deep Latino explorations of Afro-Caribbean grooves\,” and the New York Times wrote\, “the melodies are gorgeous and the tunes perfectly arranged\, precise rhythms making way for singing or a drum section.” LP21 is also a non-profit community-based organization\, founded in 1983 by National Heritage Fellow Juan Gutiérrez and located in the heart of El Barrio (NYC’s Spanish Harlem); the group’s mission is to “unite community building and cultural equity through music.” Members make traditional music programming accessible to the public\, expose inner city youth and others to the cultural heritage of Puerto Rico while encouraging their active participation in these traditions\, and perform a repertoire of work embedded in the rich tradition of Puerto Rican folk music for audiences everywhere. DESCRIPTION:10:30 am \nWomen in early eighteenth century Spanish Colonial New Mexico had rights and privileges that were not enjoyed by other women in North America until the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  Under Spanish law women were considered separate entities and valuable members of Spanish society.  As such\, they could own property\, inherit in their own name\, and act as court witnesses.  In particular they could make accusations and denunciations to the local alcalde mayor and governor\, which they frequently did.  The thirty-one documents in Spanish Colonial Women and the Law show that Spanish Colonial women were aware of their rights and used them to assert themselves in the struggling communities of New Mexico.  The presentation by Linda Tigges and Richard Salazar will use language from the documents to show how Spanish Colonial women to used Spanish the law to support and protect themselves. \n \nLinda Tigges\, a former land planner with the City of Santa Fe and the principal with Tigges Planning Consultants\, dealing with land use cases since 1979.  She has worked with historic land use documents since the early 1980s and is currently a Spanish Colonial historian in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. She has published articles in the New Mexico Genealogist\, Herencia\, and Nuestra Raices Journal. \nRichard Salazar retired as director of the Archival Services Division at the New Mexico State Records Center and Archives in 1996.  Since that time\, he has conducted historical research for various acequia associations in northern New Mexico and has worked with New Mexico’s archival documents\, including land grant records\, for over forty years. \n

SUMMARY:National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (RENTAL)
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nThis all-ages free event includes an art show/spoken word\, salsa dancing lessons\, then dancing\, and free food along with HIV education and testing. \nNLAAD is a national community mobilization and social marketing campaign that unites the Hispanic/Latino community in efforts to raise HIV awareness\, promotion of HIV testing\, prevention\, and education; in addition to other critical health issues such as viral hepatitis\, sexually transmitted infections (STIs)\, and tuberculosis (TB). This mini-fest features two of our regular performers doing short sets as a way to introduce the kids to some cool different cultures. \nThis year the participating bands are Trad.Attack! (Estonia) and Betsayda Machado y La Parranda El Clavo (Venezuela). \nThis year we are opening the program up to the general public. Come share some great music and the joy and enthusiasm of seeing the kids engage with the bands. They remind us to savor the most subtle\, elegant\, and profound aspects of our daily lives here in our beautiful New Mexico communities\, and to enjoy our time at the cinema. \nOpening night has evolved into a lively community event on South 4th Street & Bridge Street in the beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center\, with its iconic vaulted ceilings and stunning architecture. Families\, academics\, students\, filmmakers\, artists\, community leaders\, and so many others mingle before the theatre opens\, with beverages and food from our community’s finest restaurants and cameras flashing. It has truly evolved into a beautiful event. \nThis year\, our team has selected a lineup of films which perfectly illustrate enriching points of view about emerging issues and topics that shape the current Hispanic-Latino cultures and landscapes\, both here in New Mexico and beyond. This year’s screenings will take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, UNM\, and the Guild Cinema. Central themes include immigration and children’s film\, as well as New Mexico filmmaking.
