    7:30 pm Born in Santiago in 1985, the grandson of Jewish refugees fleeing persecution in Europe, Nano Stern represents a new generation inspired by the nueva canción movement. A guitar virtuoso with a powerful singing voice, he combines traditional Chilean, Latin American, and European folk music with jazz improvisation and rock influence, as well as his early classical training and the inspiration of musical icons such as Violeta Parra and Inti-Illimani.   • Film: Selections from New Mexico and The Vietnam War: Portrait of a Generation

    7 pm Produced by New Mexico PBS, this series of short documentaries focuses on New Mexico’s diverse Vietnam War veterans, families, and refugees whose lives were changed by the war. These are dramatic first person accounts of duty, honor, courage, sacrifice, loss, understanding, and renewal. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Michael Kamins, executive producer, and Tom Baca, a veteran whose story is captured in the film.     3:30 pm Join us for an examination of New Mexico’s public ideology of tri-culturalism, which holds that the state consists of three separate ethnic groups living together in harmony. Chris Wilson, Professor of Cultural Landscape Studies at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning will discuss the myth, developed in the 1880s as part of the campaign to make New Mexico a state, and crystalized in the early 20th century with the rise of mass tourism.   • ¡Vamos al Museo!

    10:30 am The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to offer children’s programming on the first Saturday morning of every month. This is a fun and engaging docent and artist-led family program. Families (limited to 25 participants) get a 30-minute museum tour focused on an art form, source inspiration, artist or type of material. Following the tour, the whole family can create their own artwork in the Pete V. Domenici Education Building Creative Classroom.     5 pm to 7 pm Join us for the opening reception for the exhibition The Art of Christmas: New Mexico Style, featuring approximately 430 handmade ornaments by more than 125 New Mexican artists that have been collected by the Duran family (Matt, Jeanette, and their son Gabriel) over nearly 20 years. Matt and Jeanette began collecting Christmas ornaments in 2000 and there first tree was only 4 feet tall.
