DESCRIPTION:5:30-7 pm\nNHCC Library\, History and Literary Arts Building \nOpera novices and aficionados are invited to three free interactive presentations about  “María de Buenos Aires\,” Astor Piazzola’s extraordinary tango-opera. Over three Wednesday evenings\, poet Valerie Martínez and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead you on a magical journey through the story\, the libretto\, the music\, and the staging of this evocative work\, which tells the story of María\, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires\, who sleepwalks through life\, death\, the afterlife\, and is reborn into “innocence.” The music\, by tango legend Ástor Piazzolla\, is based on “nuevo tango\,” a genre that Piazzolla revolutionized by infusing Argentine tango with elements of jazz and classical music. Those who attend all three sessions will receive a 50% discount on tickets to a performance of the show\, which runs from February 17-24 in the Journal Theater. \nDates and Topics: \nJanuary 23: Story\, Text\, and Context\, with Valerie Martínez \n\n Maria’s Argentina: old tango bars\, duende\, crafting the libretto\, signs and symbols\, magical realism.\n\nJanuary 30: The Music\, with Oliver Prezant \n\nAstor Piazzola and Tango Nuevo\, singing the story-setting the text\, the music of character and situation.\n\nFebruary 6: Maria on Stage – “Operita” or Opera? with Oliver Prezant \n\nDirector’s choice: blocking\, lighting\, sets\, costumes. Santa Fe’s second Poet Laureate\, Valerie taught poetry and literature at the college/university level for 23 years. As a core artist and Executive Director of Littleglobe\, Valerie worked in collaboration with the Santa Fe Opera Community Engagement Program to co-create two community-based operas: Memorylines: Voces de Nuestras Jornadas (2008) and the Santa Fe Bus Opera (2010). \nOliver Prezant has presented lectures and education programs for The Santa Fe Opera and Opera Southwest. He is the Music Director and conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra\, and the Artistic Advisor to the ArtWorks Program\, which provides arts education workshops for Santa Fe Public Schools students and teachers. He was on the faculty of the Contemporary Music Program at the College of Santa Fe and Santa Fe University of Art and Design.

DESCRIPTION:10 am – 5 pm\nDomenici Education Building\, Room 122/124 \nWhen you are often the only person who identifies the way you do\, entering a room can be extremely uncomfortable. Now imagine that a joke is then made on your behalf. Poking fun at your natural hair\, or teasing your personality characteristics because they reject the stereotype associated with your group affiliation. “Not being black enough\,” “Acting white\,” or having your native language skills criticized by friends and family are often commonplace. These statements or questions are often a way to challenge our belonging or even our presence in certain spaces. This can happen at school\, work or even at the grocery store. Learn how to work through these situations and what to say when microaggressions appear.\n$40 Early Bird Registration\, $80 Groups of 3 & $60 Late Registration\n(fees not included in the price of the registration) \nVal Day-Sanchez and Carli Romero present a 1 day training on handling these dangerous comments in our daily lives. Using Val’s hit book\, The Only Black Girl in the Room as the basis of the curriculum\, Val creates a safe space to learn how to talk about difficult topics like race\, implicit bias\, sexism\, and gender identity. Carli will focus on our bodies. How do we center ourselves and our breath when we are triggered by microaggressions. \nThrough a series of activities\, and discussions\, participants will leave with options when they are the target of a microaggression from family or friends. We’ve all been caught off guard when certain comments are made. When do we say something? When can we say something? And more importantly\, when we speak\, how can we ensure we are heard?\nSchedule \n10 am Introductions: We are all entering this workshop from different places in our lives and in our understanding. That doesn’t mean we should judge. \n10:15 am What Is A Microaggression?: It doesn’t matter if it was a joke\, or your intention was to provide support\, if someone leaves the interaction feeling offended or unsafe\, clearly your intention was not aligned with your impact\, now what? Perhaps you are singled out because of your sexual orientation? You go home to visit and feel anxious and bombarded by the off the cuff comments that are made\, asking why you aren’t married? Or perhaps at a company mixer your coworkers begin debasing your friends because of their race or religion? You want to say something but you’re worried about offending your family\, being alienated at work\, or ostracizing your friends\, what are your next steps? \n11 am White Fragility\, Relationship Dynamics & Trauma: What are the barriers keeping us silent? Who is speaking? Do we feel safe? Do we have power? All of this can effect how we respond to this poisonous statements. We all have biases\, some we are aware of while others just seem natural. We’ve never examined them before. How do microaggressions reintroduce us to our past trauma? What’s the harm in stereotypes and assumptions and why does it seem like white people seem more surprised by this than people of color? Well\, that phenomenon actually has a name\, “White Fragility.” \n12 pm-1 pm Microaggressions and Recovery: The tightening of our chest\, sweaty palms\, shortness of breath\, this is often how our bodies respond to microaggressions. Learn coping mechanisms to help with this process. Shame\, grief\, anger\, guilt can come up when speaking to microaggressions on either side of the instances\, how do we deal with that? Well\, it starts with sending love to our past self. We are talking about the reality that our beliefs drive our behaviors. Now from a mindfulness/therapeutic/recovery perspective – growth requires an ongoing examination of beliefs\, and that is intricately connected to our racial/gendered conditioning. Let’s learn how to recognize and shift our beliefs which are grounded in biases. \n1 pm-2 pm Lunch Break: Off Campus \n2 pm-3 pm How Can we Respond to Microaggressions?: Let’s work through case studies. If it was a friend or an acquaintance versus the family matriarch? What about your employer or someone you work with? What can you say when confronted with a microaggression depends a lot on the setting. \n4:30 pm-5 pm Closing thoughts: Whether we identify as marginalized group members or as an ally\, what can we do in our little space in the world to create a more inclusive environment? Is it the way that we talk? The way that we engage on social media? DESCRIPTION:Camina el Autor showcases the extraordinary work of Guaman Poma; explores the history of the indigenous people of Peru\, Andean civilization\, and Spanish conquest; and broadens our understanding of Peruvian culture and history.The digital images and accompanying texts have been provided to the NHCC by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, with assistance from the Consulate General of Peru in Denver. The NHCC has curated these (398 fullpage drawings) to present a vibrant and informative exhibit that encourages learning\, discovery\, and contemplation. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nMelazaMusic and the National Hispanic Cultural Center present a live pop-up salsa event with Son Como Son and Ivón Ulibarrí & Café Mocha. This family-friendly event\, also featuring drinks and delicious Latin cuisine\, will be held in the NHCC’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard. \n$12 w/ $2 discount for NHCC members; free for children 12 and younger \n \nSon Como Son bills itself as “Salsa\, Cuban Style.” Founded in 1993\, it is unquestionably one of Albuquerque’s longest-standing and most popular salsa ensembles. The band has played regularly to packed audiences of dedicated and enthusiastic salseros at the NM Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars series; at the Cooperage; and at special concerts in venues such as the Telluride Jazz Festival. Son Como Son is directed by renowned trombonist\, vocalist\, percussionist\, composer\, and arranger César Bauvallet\, who moved from Havana\, Cuba to Albuquerque in 1992. \nIvón Ulibarrí & Café Mocha\, also one of Albuquerque’s oldest and hottest salsa bands\, serves up a blend of son\, cha-cha\, merengue\, cumbia\, and other styles from the Caribbean and beyond. An award-winning vocalist and songwriter and a pioneer of salsa music in New Mexico\, Ivón has been entertaining for over 30 years.

SUMMARY:La Canoa: At Intersection of Cultural Heritage and Climate Change: A Call to Action
DESCRIPTION:2 pm – 4 pm \nPlease join Theresa Cárdenas as she discusses climate change and how it has become one of the most significant and fastest growing threats to people and their cultural heritage worldwide. In particular\, Cárdenas will talk about the historic impact of climate change on cultural heritage in New Mexico. The impacts of climate change are damaging infrastructure\, ecosystems\, and social systems that provide essential benefits and quality of life to communities. What does this mean for our lands and peoples of New Mexico? Is New Mexico prepared to face the unprecedented\, systemic threat to people and their cultural heritage? Creating bridges and cooperation between experts and decision makers involved in the sectors of heritage\, culture\, and climate science is important to inspire and stimulate new approaches to taking climate action. \nThis is a FREE event OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. \n \nTheresa Cárdenas is a sustainability practitioner\, working as a consultant at the intersection of public policy\, environmental and social justice challenges. She writes\, “I have a simple mission; working to meet today’s needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their needs”. Theresa became passionate about the built environment and sustainability 20 years ago as co-owner of a home building company in Albuquerque\, NM\, and that passion lead her to create Noble Renewables Group of the West; a social enterprise advocating for environmental and social change by providing strategic guidance to organizations. She worked in partnership with the Union of Concerned Scientists\, to help advance clean energy policies in a legislative\, regulatory and advisory setting and the current Chair of the Middle Rio Grande Water Advocates. She holds a Bachelors of University Studies degree from the University of New Mexico\, Albuquerque\, NM. and graduate of Harvard University\, John F. Kennedy School of Government\, Executive Education in Leadership\, Organizing and Action. She is a fellow of the National Hispana Leadership Institute. With a libretto based on “Alì Babà and the Forty Thieves\,” the well-known and lively story from One Thousand and One Nights\, Alì Babà was composed by Giovanni Bottesini\, an Italian composer and double bass virtuoso known as the “Paganini of the bass.” \n$19\, $39\, $59\, $79\, $99; discounts for groups of eight or more and patrons 30 and younger \n \nThe opera premiered in 1871 in London\, with considerable acclaim and numerous performances. Later\, however\, the score was lost\, and it has not been heard in well over a century. Beníitez is an iconic figure in American flamenco. Her riveting story begins with the complexity of her mixed Native American and Puerto Rican heritage followed by her extraordinary journey as a young woman leaving her home on the outskirts of Taos Pueblo to study flamenco in Spain. From the inherent irony of her identity as a Native American woman striving to master the art of a culture that had colonized the Southwestern United States\, she grew into an artist driven to forge her own way in the world\, starting a business\, \, a non-profit institution\, a school\, and a professional touring company. Her illustrious career\, from appearances in film and television to stages across the world\, is an inspiration to artists\, students of history\, and seekers of core human truths. The current humanitarian crisis along New Mexico’s southern border demonstrates the urgency of Indigenous transnational existences as they transit and transgress the political integrities of settlerstates and tribal nations alike. Dr. Gonzales will discuss the significance of New Mexico in building bridges of critical understanding and alliance inside this vital thoroughfare between Native America and Latin America. \nThis is a FREE event OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. \n \nGregorio Gonzales is Genízaro and Comanche from the borderlands of Comanchería and Genízaro country in northern New Mexico. He is currently the 2019-2020 Riley Scholar-in-Residence in Anthropology and Southwest Studies at Colorado College. Earning his Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in 2017\, Dr. Gonzales’s writings have appeared in the New Mexico Magazine\, Peace Review\, and Red Ink\, among others. This exhibit\, which will run from January 24 through June 30. \nThe exhibit features women from 24 countries in the international Hispanic diaspora who were instrumental in women’s suffrage\, including Nina Otero Warren (New Mexico\, US)\, Bertha Lutz (Brazil)\, Mathilde Hidalgo de Procel (Ecuador)\, Elvia Carrillo Puerto (Mexico)\, Ofelia Domínguez Navarro (Cuba)\, Elena Caffarena (Chile)\, Josefa Llanes Escoda (Philippines) and Jovita Idar (Texas\, US). \n \nOrganized by decade and countries\, the exhibit features photographs\, narrative\, objects (including household items)\, books and documents that illuminate the fight for suffrage by Latinas worldwide. \nThe exhibit also features a companion piece\, “Pan American Unity\,” a mural in woodblock by Albuquerque artist Julianna Kirwin. Kirwin replaced Diego Rivera’s Founding Fathers (in one of the panels of his 1940 “Pan American Unity” mural in San Francisco) with powerful women in the Americas who have shaped its destiny: Berta Cáceres\, Ruth Bader Ginsberg\, Dolores Huerta\, Michelle Bachelet\, Joy Harjo\, Deb Haaland\, Isabel Allende\, Helen Cordero\, Emma Gonzalez and María Martínez. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public during hours of operation in the HLA building: Tuesday-Friday drom 8:30 am – 5:30 pm and the first Saturday of the month from 1-5 pm.

Scholarship winners are then chosen on the basis of talent and artistic achievement; the scholarship awards\, from and for the community\, are presented at a final concert and reception. Over $10\,000 in awards\, through a sponsorship by the Meredith Foundation and the generosity of individual donors\, go to the deserving applicants. \n \nIsabel Bayrakdarian\nThis year\, for the first time ever\, Vocal Artistry goes virtual! For the 11th Annual Art Song Festival of New Mexico\, Canciones Españoles\, 59 students of singing and piano have submitted applications online to be adjudicated by international artists in Spanish Art Song. Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian\, celebrated in opera houses and concert halls around the world\, will be adjudicating all the college singers. DESCRIPTION:9:30 am (MTS)\nA virtual first day of issue ceremony held on the Postal Service’s Facebook and Twitter pages:\nusps.com/guapulo\, facebook.com/USPS\, and twitter.com/USPS \nThe United States Postal Service is partnering with the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) on the release of the Our Lady of Guápulo Christmas forever stamp. \nThe event will include remarks from Postal Service Vice President for Retail and Post Office Operations Angela Curtis and NHCC Art Museum and Visual Arts Program Director and Chief Curator Dr. Tey Marianna Nunn\, and entertainment will be provided by NHCC History and Literary Arts Program Director Valerie Martinez and the Harlem School of the Arts. \n \nDesigned by Greg Breeding\, the stamp features a detail of “Our Lady of Guápulo\,” an 18th-century oil painting by an unknown artist in Cuzco\, Peru\, from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Enrobed in a pyramidal gown speckled with jewels and holding a scepter woven with roses and leaves\, a crowned Virgin Mary looks down at a similarly adorned Christ child in her left arm. A red rosary ropes across the center of her dress and down to her right. \nBetween the 16th and 18th centuries\, European painters worked with indigenous artists in and around Cuzco. The Europeans trained local artists in styles and forms that dominated their home countries at the end of the Renaissance period and during the Baroque era. \nOur Lady of Guápulo is a local variant of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Extremadura\, Spain. The image venerated as Our Lady of Guápulo originated as a sculpture\, commissioned in Quito\, Ecuador\, in 1584 and transferred to a chapel in the nearby village of Guápulo in 1587.

DESCRIPTION:1 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom. Register HERE \nIn Overhaul\, A Social History of the Albuquerque Locomotive Repair Shops\, historians Richard Flint and Shirley Cushing Flint present the largely forgotten story of Albuquerque’s locomotive repair shops\, the driving force behind the city’s economy for more than seventy years. In the course of their study they also document the thousands of skilled workers who kept the locomotives in operation\, many of whom were part of the growing Hispano and Native American middle class. \nFree community event \n \nTheir critical work kept the Atchison\, Topeka\, and Santa Fe’s steam trains running and established and maintained Albuquerque’s unique character in the region. Including a generous selection of historic photographs\, Overhaul provides a glimpse into the people\, places\, culture\, and special history found in Albuquerque’s locomotive shops during the boom of steam railroading. This internment center for young women ages 13 to 21 was in operation from 1944 to 1985. The filmmakers’ use of documentary as an archaeological exercise\, uncovering evidence of the daily reality experienced at the site\, offers valuable insights into an uncomfortable and little-known part of recent Spanish history\, and raises ongoing questions. Can evidence of resistance and rebellion be found in a space that was constructed for the repression of female sexuality? What memories are activated by these relics\, and how can they be integrated into the historical record of the Franco regime and Spain’s transition to democracy? \n2019; Spanish with English subtitles; 10 minutes; not rated. \nFree community event \n \nDuring the month of July\, in a collaboration with film distributor Marvin & Wayne\, the Vimeo channel of Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque hosts Te estoy amando locamente\, LGTBI+ Short Film Series. The series comprises eight different stories by eight filmmakers\, showcasing a remarkable variety of cinematic language while dealing specifically\, but not only\, with issues of gender identity\, same sex love\,and transsexuality. These personal reflections\, testimonies\, and portraits present viewers with realities that are generally underrepresented in cinema. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC. \nInstituto Cervantes and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, with the collaboration of AMP Concerts and the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council\, present the first Festival Oralidad on November 18\, 20\, and 22\, 2021. The festival combines workshops\, lectures\, panel discussions\, storytelling performances\, and musical performances connected to the oral tradition and storytelling. It was created with two essential purposes: the promotion of the oral tradition of storytelling and the establishment of a collaborative relationship among artists from New Mexico\, other parts of the United States\, Spain\, and Latin America to create new works together and contribute to the advancement of the genre. \n \nNew Mexico\, where Native American cultures\, Latin American oral tradition\, and cultural traditions such as flamenco converge\, is an ideal place for a festival focused on the oral tradition\, and Instituto Cervantes is positioned to encourage this union of cultures and promote an exchange between artists of diverse origins. Over three days\, Festival Oralidad offers academic and theoretical debate\, shares the secrets of storytellers with children\, and brings together some of the most significant musicians and storytellers in the U.S. While travel restrictions this year have limited participation to artists residing in-country\, future festivals will include colleagues from Latin America and Spain. \nA reception with wine and Spanish ham will greet festival participants on the opening evening\, followed by an introduction to the three-day event by Nasario García\, a folklorist\, writer and educator\, and one of New Mexico’s foremost experts on oral tradition. He will give a talk on the state’s cultural and linguistic roots in the spoken word\, and will discuss the importance of storytelling with Silvia Grijalba\, director of the Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque and El Paso. The evening will conclude with a concert by the Nacha Mendez Trio \nNasario García\, professor emeritus of Spanish and Hispanic literatures\, holds a B.A. in Spanish\, an M.A. in Portuguese\, and a Ph.D. in 19th century Spanish literature. He has published more than 30 books educating both adults and children about the richness of New Mexico’s Spanish language and culture\, including Memorias de los viejos: Tales of the Rio Puerco; Abuelitos: Stories of the Rio Puerco Valley; Comadres: Hispanic Women of the Rio Puerco Valley; and Más antes: Hispanic Folklore of the Rio Puerco Valley. Dr. García has worked over the years to preserve the language and culture of northern New Mexico\, particularly his beloved Rio Puerco Valley\, where he grew up in the community of Ojo del Padre (Guadalupe). \nNacha Mendez combines storytelling\, music\, and song in a journey through her personal experience that speaks to her Latin blood\, Native American history\, and experience as an artist throughout Europe. Mendez grew up in the small border town of La Union in southern New Mexico\, where she began singing and playing guitar at an early age. She learned traditional ranchera singing from her grandmother and performed in border towns near El Paso. \nShe studied classical voice and electronic music at New Mexico State University before moving to New York\, where she studied flamenco guitar with Manuel Granados of the Conservatory of Music in Barcelona\, Spain. In the early 1990s\, she was a lead singer with Robert Ashley’s opera company\, touring Europe and Japan\, and has also collaborated with celebrated composer Steve Peters. \nShe has received an award from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and has been honored by the New Mexico Committee of the National Museum of Women Artists\, voted Best Female Vocalist in Santa Fe\, New Mexico in 2009 and 2010\, and awarded Best Latin Production at the New Mexico Music Awards. \nThis concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event.
