SUMMARY:Fright Night Film Screening: Dracula
DESCRIPTION:10:30 pm \nRenfield\, a solicitor\, makes a journey into Transylvania via stagecoach. He mentions his destination\, Castle Dracula\, to the locals who react with alarm. They tell him Drácula is a vampire and when he doesn’t believe them\, one insists he wear a cross. When he arrives at the Castle\, the Count bids him welcome. After drinking drugged wine\, Renfield collapses\, still wearing the cross\, and is bitten. Aboard ship\, a now-enslaved Renfield laughs maniacally below as Drácula picks off the crew one by one. When the ship reaches England\, he is the only living person found. \nFree Community Event \nDirectors: George Melford | Adult Horror | 1931 (USA) | Run time: 104 min. | Not Rated: NR | Studio: Universal Pictures \n \nDrácula meets Dr. Seward and his family at the opera. Lucía is completely fascinated by him and that night becomes his victim. Professor Van Helsing is called in\, and he recognizes the danger for what it is. He also realizes that Dr. Seward’s patient Renfield is somehow tied up in events. But soon after meeting the Doctor’s new neighbor\, Van Helsing figures out that Drácula is a vampire—based on the fact that Drácula casts no reflection in the mirror. By now\, Seward’s daughter Eva is falling under his spell. To her horror\, she feels increasingly weak and also increasingly wild—at one point attacking her fiancé Juan. With Seward’s and Harker’s help\, Van Helsing seeks to trap Drácula\, who outwits them and escapes with Eva by seizing control of a nurse’s mind. They follow Renfield into Carfax Abbey—an act which ends with Drácula killing his slave by strangulation\, and then tossing him from a tall staircase. Deep in the catacombs under Carfax\, they find Drácula asleep and Eva still alive. Van Helsing drives a stake through the vampire’s heart\, and as Eva and Harker leave\, Van Helsing prays over Renfield’s body.

SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Bluebeard’s Castle with Doctor Atomic
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 22\, 27 & 29\n2:00 pm Sundays\n7:30 pm Friday \nEnter Bluebeard’s Castle if you dare! \nJust in time for Halloween\, Opera Southwest presents a double bill of thrills and chills! First\, join us for Bartok’s chilling one-act opera\, Bluebeard’s Castle. Then\, dive into the psychological horror story of the Doctor Atomic Symphony\, based on the Doctor Atomic opera by John Adams. This symphony tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the first successful atom bomb. \n$22\, $42\, $63\, $85\, $105 with discounts for groups of 8 or more\, anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \n \nFirst on the bill\, Bluebeard’s Castle\, the story of Judith\, the young new wife of the menacing Duke Bluebeard\, who unlocks the seven forbidden doors in her husband’s castle and is eventually confronted by the women he has already loved and murdered. \nThis production has us working with two senior set artists from Meow Wolf: Lance Ryan McGoldrick and David Cudney. In this symbolist opera\, each room is assigned a color. The two artists are working with the traditional themes while interpreting them using modern technology and their specialized skills. McGoldrick and Cudney have been collaborating for a decade and they’re bringing all their artistic experience to the scenic design of this production. They’re creating atmospheric effects\, sculptures\, and projections that will enhance the seven secret rooms as Judith insists on unlocking each door of her new husband’s castle. \nNext up\, the Doctor Atomic Symphony performed by the OSW opera orchestra with projections. In this atmospheric composition\, Adams presents highlights from the full opera\, with instrumental treatments of the story and themes. \n“With the incredible interest in Oppenheimer unleashed by this summer’s blockbuster movie\, Oppenheimer\, Opera Southwest decided to revisit the music of the popular new opera by John Adams\, Doctor Atomic\, by presenting the Doctor Atomic Symphony on the opening program of our 51st season\,” said Tony Zancanella\, OSW Executive Director.  “As a small & nimble company\, we are sometimes able to pivot programmatically to meet a broader cultural moment.” “There are all of these striking thematic and symbolic cross-connections between these works\, which delve deep into the psychology of their central subjects as they tackle dark and morally complex themes.” said Artistic Director Anthony Barrese. \nRun time: 2 hours 30 minutes\, including one intermission. \n*This event is a rental event\, not an NHCC production. SUMMARY:Power of Our Stories: Crow County: Our Right to Food Sovereignty\, Adios Amor\, & Mayors of Shiprock
DESCRIPTION:2nd Annual Film Symposium\n6:00 pm Doors\n6:30 pm Screening Crow Country: Our Right to Food Sovereignty\n7:00 pm Screening Adios Amor\n8:00 pm Screening The Mayors of Shiprock\n9:00 pm Panel Discussion & Q&A to immediately follow with Ramona Emerson\, Laurie Coyle\, Tsanavi Spoonhunter \nNHCC | Bank of America Theatre \nFree community event. \nCrow country: Our Right To Food Sovereignty is a 20-minute documentary that enlightens its audience to one tribe’s struggle to retain food security. The Crow Indian Reservation is the largest reservation in Montana\, encompassing 2.2 million acres of land. There are approximately 8\,000 Crow (Apsáalooke) tribal members who live there. In 2017\, the Crow Agency laid off 1\,000 of its 1\,300 employees due to federal government cutbacks\, ultimately straining tribal operations and leaving many families struggling to make ends meet. In 2019\, the only grocery store on the reservation burnt down\, and the owners are not planning to rebuild. For the Crow\, the federal and tribal governments are both failing its people. \nThe Crow Tribe— like most tribes— have been reliant on federal\, tribal and non profit food distribution centers. As a result\, tribal nations across the country are exploring the idea of ‘food sovereignty\,’ the inherent right of a community to identify its own food systems. Returning to traditional and nutritious foods has been shown to be an effective way to restore Native food systems and create employment. However\, restrictions on ancestral hunting grounds are preventing tribal members from providing for themselves and their families. CROW COUNTRY tells the stories of three Apsáalooke tribal members: a journalist; an elder; and a hunter\, as they try to address these issues\, and focuses on their resilience despite the hardships that they face. \nRun Time: 20 mins \nIn Adios Amor\, the discovery of lost photographs sparks the search for a hero that history forgot— Maria Moreno\, a migrant mother who sacrificed everything but her twelve kids in the passionate pursuit of justice for farmworkers. Years before Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta launched the United Farm Workers\, Maria picked up the only weapon she had—her voice—and became an outspoken leader in an era when women were relegated to the background. The first farm worker woman in America to be hired as a union organizer\, Maria’s story was silenced\, and her legacy buried—until now. \nRun Time: 58 mins \nThe Mayors of Shiprock: Every Monday in the small community of Shiprock\, New Mexico\, a group of young Navajo leaders meet to decide how they will help their community. For over seven years\, the Northern Dine Youth Committee has worked to give youth opportunities to directly make changes within their community. But while the NDYC works to make changes\, many members also consider their own futures\, commitments to family and the world outside of the Shiprock. While they love their community\, they all must consider their options both on and off the reservation. \nRun Time: 52 mins

There is no image\, no legend\, no creature\, more riddled with weaponized femininity then my beloved\, Carmencita. Carmen’s origin story is rich—it has been written that the author of the original novella\, Prosper Mérimée\, derived his inspiration for this illusory gypsy from a real-life Sephardic Jew. Though Jews were exotic at the time\, Gypsies had a more solid reputation for nefariousness and made a more daring choice for his Parisian newspaper-reading audience. With ‘Beyond Carmen’ we will explore her Sephardic roots\, singing in Ladino or “Judeo Spanish”\, similar to ancient Castilian Spanish. We will play with the rhythms\, textures\, and accents of the marginalized people of the diaspora\, and most of all we will sing and cry out for the misunderstood experience of being fiercely female in a time that saw a woman’s strength as something dangerous\, dark\, and destined for annihilation.” – Audrey Babcock \n$35 with discounts for students and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \nFor more information about Opera Southwest\, please\, visit their website here: www.operasouthwest.org

SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: New Year’s with the Opera!

Featuring Clay Hilley & Sara Duchovnay \nClose out 2024 and begin 2025 with featured performers tenor Clay Hilley and soprano Sara Duchovnay. Clay Hilley makes an exciting return to Opera Southwest after his stunning portrayal of Radamès in “Aida” back in 2015. Clay comes to us directly from the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has earned rave reviews from the New York Times and Financial Times\, and he continues to shine in some of opera’s most illustrious heroic roles. Of her 2019 role debut as Nedda in Pagliacci with Opera Roanoke\, the Roanoke Times praised her “nuanced portrait of an unhappy woman” and “her high notes [which] rang out with ease at the swelling climaxes in both her first act aria and in her love duet with Silvio.”  \nAccompanying our singers are the Opera Southwest Orchestra\, the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus\, and the Albuquerque Youth Symphony. With a variety of opera favorites and light classics\, there is something for everyone to ring in the New Year. \nRunning time: Approx 2 hours \n$35\, $47\, $60\, $72\, & $85 with discounts for students and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Dolores
DESCRIPTION:October 26\, 29\, 31 & November 2\, 2025\n2:00 pm Sundays\, 7:30 pm Wednesday & Friday \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nMusic / Nicolás Lell Benavides\nLibretto / Marella Martin Koch \n1968. The Delano grape strike is dragging into its third year. Farmworkers in California are building solidarity that transcends race and\nlanguage. Bobby Kennedy is running for president. Tricky Dick is on the radio promising discipline. Dolores Huerta is holding the movement together with one hand. With the other\, she dials home\, again\, to say goodnight to children she hasn’t seen in weeks. \nShe’s not a symbol. Not yet.\nShe’s just doing the work. \nDolores is an opera that floats between the real and the imagined\, memory and nightmare. Composer Nicolás Lell Benavides and librettist Marella Martin Koch stitch history into something fragile and feverish. There are sacred chants\, electric guitar pulsations\, bossa nova hallucinations. \nLabor icon Dolores Huerta helped build a union out of dust and righteous anger. She walked the fields\, held the line\, made the calls. With César Chávez and Larry Itliong\, she shaped a movement that reached the ears of presidents but never lost sight of the people bent over the vines. The work didn’t stop. It never does. That’s the cost of believing another world is possible. \n¡SÍ SE PUEDE! \nCommissioned and Co-produced by Opera Southwest\, West Edge Opera and San Diego Opera\, presented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \nPiano tuning and preparation are provided by Albuquerque Piano Services: albuquerque-piano-tuning.com\nRunning Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes including one intermission \nSUNG IN ENGLISH\n-English translations are projected above the stage for all operas- \n45 Minutes before curtain\, Opera Southwest offers our “Opera Insights” pre-opera talks. These take place in either Bank of America\nTheatre or Wells Fargo Auditorium\, accessible from the shared lobby with the Albuquerque Journal Theatre. \nFor more information on Opera Southwest please click HERE. \nEnhance your weeknight opera-going experience with Taste of Opera – a pre-show dinner and relaxed conversation with Opera Southwest artistic staff members on Wednesday\, October 29\, 2025. SUMMARY:OSW: NM Symphonic Chorus: Mozart – C Minor Mass K 427
DESCRIPTION:2:00 pm \nOpera Southwest Presents: The New Mexico Symphonic Chorus \nMozart – Mass in C Minor\, K. 427\nSymphony No. 40 in G Minor\, K. 550 \nTwo pillars of Mozart’s mature style: one sacred\, one symphonic. \nModeled on the grandeur of Bach’s Mass in B Minor and the Salzburg ceremonial tradition\, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor blends contrapuntal rigor with operatic brilliance. Though unfinished\, it stands among the most exalted sacred works of the Classical era. Paired with the storm-lit urgency of the G Minor Symphony\, this program reveals the expressive breadth of Mozart’s late style. Featuring soloists Lindsay Ohse\, Amanda Crider\, \nBernard Holcomb\, and Javier Ortiz. \nFor more information on the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus and Opera Southwest please click HERE. \n\n*The event is a rental event not an NHCC production.
