The film centers on the personal stories of Dora María Téllez\, the young medical student who became a key Sandinista general\, and four of her revolutionary allies. Now\, amid staggering levels of gender violence in Nicaragua\, these same women brave the streets once again to lead popular movements for equality and democracy. Presented in partnership with New Mexico PBS as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. During the 1950s\, free-spirited\, mostly Jewish dancers from New York City fell head over heels for the mambo\, the hot dance from Cuba that became a worldwide sensation. Their love for Latin rhythms earned them a nickname: the “mamboniks.” Now retired\, yet still dancing in Florida\, a lovable\, somewhat zany collection of dancers from the ‘50s share a passion that age has not cooled. Followed by refreshments. \nThis trilogy of one-act plays is written by Barelas resident playwrights Raúl Garza\, Leonard Madrid and Mónica Sánchez\, and inspired by the history\, dreams and musings of one of Albuquerque’s oldest neighborhoods. This trilogy has been developed with the support of Artful Life’s El Puente/Barelas project and in partnership with the NHCC and Homewise. \nTwo additional readings of the plays are below: \nPAST\nSunday\, July 28\, 6 pm at B. Juani de la Isla\, highly praised in Spain as a flamenco accompanist and soloist\, has recorded over 150 albums with artists worldwide. The band has played regularly to packed audiences of dedicated and enthusiastic salseros at the NM Jazz Workshop’s Salsa Under the Stars series; at the Cooperage; and at special concerts in venues such as the Telluride Jazz Festival. Son Como Son is directed by renowned trombonist\, vocalist\, percussionist\, composer\, and arranger César Bauvallet\, who moved from Havana\, Cuba to Albuquerque in 1992. \nIvón Ulibarrí & Café Mocha\, also one of Albuquerque’s oldest and hottest salsa bands\, serves up a blend of son\, cha-cha\, merengue\, cumbia\, and other styles from the Caribbean and beyond. DESCRIPTION:10 am – 6 pm \nA celebration of food\, art\, and culture on the Rio Grande \nThe Bosque Chile Festival is a celebration of art\, culture\, and food of New Mexico\, developed to showcase and honor New Mexican and Latino/Hispanic culture and agriculture in the middle Rio Grande Valley by offering performances\, art\, educational sessions\, chef demonstrations\, value-added products\, and produce that pay homage to time-honored and celebrated New Mexican traditions\, foods\, and crafts. This public event features entertainment\, kids’ activities\, arts and crafts vendors\, food trucks/vendors\, craft beer and wine\, educational sessions\, a chicharron competition\, chef demonstrations\, a fun run\, and a poetry slam. \n$5\, kids 5 and younger free \n \nThe Festival provides Bernalillo County an avenue to offer a destination event showing the world what New Mexicans have known all along—chile is a culture and a way of life. Through the Festival we strive to increase visitation at the NHCC and to further the Center’s mission of preserving\, promoting\, and advancing Hispanic culture\, arts\, and humanities through the disciplines of performing arts\, visual arts\, literary arts and history. We have invited a wide range of Latin artists for family-friendly summer Sundays that feature live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine in the NHCC’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard. \nRedobles de Cultura is a collective of top New York City-based\, next generation Afro-Puerto Rican and Afro-Caribbean bomba practitioners\, cultural workers\, and educators. Their work highlights the deep roots of Afro-Diaspora traditions\, tracing their relevance through contemporary\, urban\, and global realities.
