SUMMARY:ALMA: Mosaics From the Soul
DESCRIPTION:The ALMA Summer Institute (formally Mayor’s Art Institute) was created in 1999 to provide paid training and mentorship for artistically talented youth and adults through its apprenticeship model. The apprentices work with Lead Artists to create handmade tile mosaics\, helping with every aspect of making a public artwork. In 8-10 weeks\, they assist with design\, carve tiles from wet clay\, glaze tiles\, fire a kiln\, cement tiles to the wall\, and grout the finished artwork. The designs are conceptualized\, researched\, and drawn collaboratively to create rich\, multi-layered representations of our place\, our culture\, and our history. Through our apprenticeship model\, we help train the next generation of artists to strive towards an arts career/arts entrepreneurial path. This exhibit\, “Mosaics From the Soul” tells ALMA’s story\, shown through drawings\, photographs and narratives. \nLocation: History and Literary Arts Building \nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:Film: La Nana/The Maid
DESCRIPTION:6 pm\nPlease note that a pre-screening conversation about the film\, led by Dr. Elizabeth Hutchison\, will begin at this time. The film will be shown at 7 pm \nRaquel has worked as a live-in\, uniformed maid for a well-to-do family in Santiago\, Chile for over 20 years. Now 41\, she is part of the family in some ways\, as emotional attachments—both positive and negative—attest\, but in others remains apart\, even expendable. When her employers decide that she needs help and hire an additional maid\, Raquel feels that she must fight for her place in the household. Her “guerrilla war” against a series of newcomers reaches increasingly audacious heights\, until someone quite different turns up and Raquel’s world begins\, very gently\, to expand.  La Nana\, described as a “microcosm of Latin social hierarchy\,” also focuses on one woman’s journey to free herself from a mental servitude of her own making. \n2009; Sebastián Silva; Spanish with English subtitles; 135 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show \nThis film\, rescheduled from March 2019\, is presented in partnership with Women’s International Study Center (WISC) as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. Dr. Elizabeth Hutchison\, WISC Fellow-in-Residence\, will introduce the film and lead a discussion with representatives of other community organizations\, beginning at 6 pm\, prior to the screening. Please join us for refreshments and further conversation in the lobby afterwards!

SUMMARY:¡Cine Magnífico!: 7th Annual Latino Film Festival: Black is Beltza
DESCRIPTION:Opening Film / NM Premiere \n6 pm Opening Reception\, 8 pm Film Screening and Q & A with Fermin Muguruza\, Director \n¡Cine Magnífico! celebrates Spanish and Latin American culture through presentation of some of the best of modern cinema in a weekend-long program\, featuring work by first-time filmmakers and established masters alike. The subject matter runs the gamut from comedies\, action\, romances and documentary films\, to dramatic masterpieces. Some of the riskiest and most innovative films of recent years will be included. \nOctober 1965. Pamplona’s troupe of giant figures\, a typical sight at the San Fermín festivities\, is invited to parade along Fifth Avenue in New York. But not all of them will be allowed to appear: due to racial discrimination\, the American authorities will ban the participation of the two black giants. Based on this true event\, Black Is Beltza tells the story of Manex\, the young man responsible for carrying one of the giants. Embarked on a long\, unexpected journey\, Manex will witness key events in history: the race riots arising from the assassination of Malcolm X\, the eccentricities of the characters in The Factory\, the alliance between the Cuban secret service and the Black Panthers\, and the proto-hippy psychedelia of the first music festivals. \nFree with a RSVP to prensa.albuquerque@cervantes.es or milly@cinemagnifico.com \n \nOctubre de 1965. \nSpain | 2018 | Run Time: 80 min | Genre: Animation for adults \n\n¡Cine Magnífico! is organized by Instituto Cervantes\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center and UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute so as to be at the forefront of the movement to increase cultural opportunities for the entire New Mexico community and to bring Latinos and non-Latinos together to share common experiences through film. \n¡Cine Magnífico! will be held September 4-8\, 2019 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque.\nhttps://cinemagnifico.com/

SUMMARY:Monthly Speakers Program for the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of NM (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:10:30 am \nThis month\, Robert Martinez will present “Mulatos of Cochiti: Caste in Spanish New Mexico.”  In this presentation\, former Deputy State Historian and now newly appointed State Historian Robert Martinez examines the role of racial mixing\, identity\, and the categorizing of humans living in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. The approach will be through the lens of the casta\, or caste system. Historical research\, genealogy\, and DNA all converge to provide a clearer understanding of Hispano roots in New Mexico\, as well as in Latino-Meso America and Hispanic Europe.  Mr. Martinez was a history teacher for 10 years in the Rio Rancho School district.  Mr. Martinez served 14 years as a research historian for the Sephardic Legacy Project.  Mr. Martinez is an accomplished musician\, who performs with his brother Lorenzo\, and the group Los Reyes de Albuquerque.

SUMMARY:¡Globalquerque! International Cinema Series: Rhymes for Young Ghouls (Canada)
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn September\, the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series showcases the ¡Globalquerque! International Cinema Series\, presented in partnership with ¡Globalquerque!\, New Mexico’s Fifteenth Celebration of World Music and Culture\, returning to the NHCC on September 20 & 21. Most films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival. \nSet on the Red Crow Mi’gMaq reservation in Quebec\, Canada\, during the mid-‘70s\, Jeff Barnaby’s feature film debut takes place during a period in Canadian history when\, by government decree\, native children under the age of 16 were required to attend residential schools. Thus far\, 15-year-old Aila has avoided the virtual prison that is St. Dymphna’s. As the reservation’s “weed princess\,” she has peddled enough drugs to pay a regular truancy tax to a sadistic Indian agent. But when her drug money is stolen and her father returns from prison\, the precarious balance of Aila’s world is destroyed. Her only options are to run or fight… and Mi’gMaq don’t run. \n2013; directed by Jeff Barnaby; English; 88 minutes; rated R. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show
