SUMMARY:¡Globalquerque! International Cinema Series: Fire at Sea/Fuocoammare (Italy)
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn September\, the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series showcases the ¡Globalquerque! International Cinema Series\, presented in partnership with ¡Globalquerque!\, New Mexico’s Fifteenth Celebration of World Music and Culture\, returning to the NHCC on September 20 & 21. Most films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival. \nThis searching\, Oscar-nominated documentary about the European immigration crisis focuses on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa\, 150 miles south of Sicily\, where thousands of people arrive each year from Africa and the Middle East en route to the continent. Four hundred thousand have landed on the island over the past two decades; fifteen thousand have died on the way. Fire at Sea contrasts the daily life of the native islanders\, particularly the bucolic childhood of 12-year-old Samuele\, with the danger\, misery\, and death confronting the refugees who attempt to make their way across the Strait of Sicily. Through extended observation rather than narrative explanation\, it shows how the normal and mundane can exist side-by-side with the horrific and tragic. \n2016; directed by Gianfranco Rosi; Italian with English subtitles; 114 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:ABQ Zine Fest 9
DESCRIPTION:The National Hispanic Cultural Center partners with ABQ Zine Fest to bring you a day dedicated to zine culture Saturday\, Oct. 5. More than 60 exhibitors from 21 cities across the nation will be in New Mexico to sell and trade their zines\, comics and small press publications. \nNow in its ninth year\, ABQ Zine Fest continues to bring people and stories to Albuquerque from a diversity of do-it-yourself (DIY) perspectives. This year’s two guest artists include illustrator Bijou Karman from Los Angeles\, and cartoonist and educator\, Breena Nuñez from Oakland. Karman will give a talk at Tamarind Institute Friday\, Oct. 4\, and Nuñez will give a zine reading at ABQ Zine Fest October 5. Both artists have developed unique voices in the world of visual art\, both often returning to zines as a vehicle to stay connected to their DIY roots. \nZines are small-circulation\, self-published works\, and while a format constantly reinventing itself\, perpetually making a comeback. But really\, zines never disappeared from the literary scene and chronicling one’s experiences is not a new form. Perhaps the first zines\, as we recognize them today\, were sci-fi fanzines made on mimeograph machines in the 1930s. The copy machine was invented shortly thereafter\, making printing an easier prospect to explore– opening the door to a wide range of zine genres\, from punk to personal\, covering art\, music\, pop culture and politics. \n“Zines champion independent voices that can get muffled by mainstream culture\,” said Marya Errin Jones\, founder and co-producer of ABQ Zine Fest. “ABQ Zine Fest is an inclusive\, noncompetitive\, diverse\, queer-friendly\, creative environment for zinesters to exhibit their work. My co-producer\, Liza Bley and I are thrilled to bring the fest to The National Hispanic Cultural Center this year.” \nAdmission to ABQZF9 is Free.\nFind out more about the fest at: abqzf.com.

SUMMARY:La Canoa: At Intersection of Cultural Heritage and Climate Change: A Call to Action
DESCRIPTION:2 pm – 4 pm \nPlease join Theresa Cárdenas as she discusses climate change and how it has become one of the most significant and fastest growing threats to people and their cultural heritage worldwide. In particular\, Cárdenas will talk about the historic impact of climate change on cultural heritage in New Mexico. The impacts of climate change are damaging infrastructure\, ecosystems\, and social systems that provide essential benefits and quality of life to communities. What does this mean for our lands and peoples of New Mexico? Is New Mexico prepared to face the unprecedented\, systemic threat to people and their cultural heritage? Creating bridges and cooperation between experts and decision makers involved in the sectors of heritage\, culture\, and climate science is important to inspire and stimulate new approaches to taking climate action. \nThis is a FREE event OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. \n \nTheresa Cárdenas is a sustainability practitioner\, working as a consultant at the intersection of public policy\, environmental and social justice challenges. She writes\, “I have a simple mission; working to meet today’s needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their needs”. Theresa became passionate about the built environment and sustainability 20 years ago as co-owner of a home building company in Albuquerque\, NM\, and that passion lead her to create Noble Renewables Group of the West; a social enterprise advocating for environmental and social change by providing strategic guidance to organizations. She worked in partnership with the Union of Concerned Scientists\, to help advance clean energy policies in a legislative\, regulatory and advisory setting and the current Chair of the Middle Rio Grande Water Advocates. She holds a Bachelors of University Studies degree from the University of New Mexico\, Albuquerque\, NM. and graduate of Harvard University\, John F. Kennedy School of Government\, Executive Education in Leadership\, Organizing and Action. She is a fellow of the National Hispana Leadership Institute.
