SUMMARY:Film: FIVER\, La mirada de ellas\, 10 años de cinedanza en España
DESCRIPTION:12 pm on Monday\, October 25 until 12 pm on Sunday\, October 31 \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nIn October\, Instituto Cervantes is collaborating for a third year with FIVER (Festival de Cine\, Danza y Nuevos Medios) to present a cycle of short films: La mirada de ellas: 10 años de cinedanza en España\, curated by FIVER director Samuel Retortillo. The screenings are among the activities celebrating the tenth anniversary of Baila España\, held annually in the city of Bremen\, Germany. FIVER\, an international platform for the support\, production\, and exhibition of film and dance\, promotes choreographic-audiovisual creation through the professionalization of the “cinedance” genre. The 2021 retrospective features ten short films directed by women selected as recipients of\, or finalists for\, awards by FIVER between 2012 and 2021.  \nFree Event  \n \nIn Kinxi\, only three minutes in length\, the ensemble Piña (Sara Fontán and Clara Tena) transport the audience to the essence of cinedance. “To end up eating kimchi is to eat quiche Lorraine in a Chinese bar.” \n2021: 3 minutes; not rated.  \nCaballo negro is the concluding part of Catalan choreographer Tuixén Benet’s final project at the Institut del Teatre\, and her first video clip. It features dancers from the group Tu Madre. \n2013; 4 minutes; not rated.  \nInspired by the work and lifestyle of “Eurocrats” in Brussels\, Belgium\, Europe Endless\, by Ana Cembrero and codirector Jorge Piquer\, features five dancers moving through empty spaces devoid of time and context. Cembrero describes the project as a fusion of three art forms: a dance film\, a theatrical performance\, and a site-specific work utilizing unconventional dance spaces. \n2014; 26 minutes; not rated.  \nThe pieces comprising Elena Castilla’s Fuego lento were developed in a choreography workshop offered by the director at the Pedro de Valdivia Juvenile Center in Villanueva de la Serena\, Badajoz. The twelve teenagers participating in the workshop responded to a series of questions in creating these works: How do you feel? What do you want to say? What would you like to do in the future? What do you long for? \n2015; 15 minutes; not rated.  \nIn Atma\, Carla Subirana tells the story of a warrior who\, forgotten by her army after losing a battle\, decides to abandon the armor that has protected her and start out on a path that will lead to a final surrender\, and to victory. \n2015; 9 minutes; not rated.  \nDa mopa (Sevillanas electrónicas)\, by María Teresa García\, embodies the dilemma of presenting a primarily musical project as a danced concert\, with themes ranging from a call to prayer to contemporary critical meta-thinking\, and highlighting the contradictions of our needs\, whether innate or acquired. \n2017; 4 minutes; not rated.  \nInspired by her performance in Mujeres que hay en mí\, as well as her own memory and those of many other women\, choreographer Carmen Porras created Inside\, inhabited landscapes to trace the ancient footsteps of a dreamlike journey through external and internal landscapes\, in which every corner resonates with the story living within the character. \n2018; 6 minutes; not rated.  \nIn Mónica Ruiz van Hattem’s Sinfonía del cuerpo\, dancer Eduardo Guerrero and singer/saxophonist Antonio Lizardo create a relationship among music\, dance\, and the environment—an ode to the body’s ability to reclaim space within the overwhelming architecture of Rotterdam. \n2019; 15 minutes; not rated.  \nCarolina Romillo’s short film Inside/Outside\, created during the pandemic\, uses contemporary dance movement to embody the anxiety and emotional ups and downs caused by imposed isolation: longing to be outside\, and forced to be inside. \n2020; 5 minutes; not rated.  \nIn Vals y rumba\, Laura Delgado and codirector Eduardo Rodríguez tell the story of a little cleaning robot in a museum and a statue of a dancer who wants to become one of the ballerinas in “The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage”—the Degas painting in front of which she is exhibited. Debussy’s “Moonlight” provides the score for this charming animated film\, in which art can awaken dreams and friendship can make them come true. \n2021; 6 minutes; not rated.  \nFIVER (all films available for viewing October 25-31): \n* Kinxi (Sara Fontán & Clara Tena\, codirected by Anna Rubirola\, 2012) \n* Caballo negro (Tuixén Benet\, 2013) \n* Europe Endless (Ana Cembrero\, codirected by Jorge Piquer\, 2014) \n* Fuego lento (Elena Castilla\, 2015) \n* Atma (Carla Subirana\, 2016) \n* Da mopa (Sevillanas electrónicas) (María Teresa García\, 2017) \n* Inside\, inhabited landscapes (Carmen Porras\, 2018) \n* Sinfonía del cuerpo (Mónica Ruiz van Hattem\, 2019) \n* Inside/Outside (Carolina Romillo\, 2020) \n* Vals y rumba (Laura Delgado\, codirected by Eduardo Rodríguez\, 2021)

SUMMARY:Film: Nuevas Cinefilias\, Estaciones singulares: Arima
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (available for 48 hours)\nOn the Instituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nJaione Camborda’s debut feature film Arima is a story\, steeped in mystery\, of four women and a girl whose lives are altered when two strangers arrive unexpectedly in their village. SUMMARY:Emporium & JAW Present Tommy Emmanuel
DESCRIPTION:8 pm (doors open at 7 pm) \n$43\, no discounts \n“Songs are our teachers. They show us the depth of the human race and its unrelenting desire to create.”—Tommy Emmanuel \nAny time you talk to any of Tommy Emmanuel’s fans\, whether musicians or audience members\, invariably they will speak of not one but two qualities that define his greatness. The first\, predictably\, is his extraordinary guitar playing.  Tommy is considered by those in the know to be among this planet’s greatest guitarists\, and his playing is simply miraculous\, as it would take three musicians\, or more\, to do what he does solo. Who else\, for example\, when playing “Day Tripper\,” can lay down the rhythm part\, dig into the riff\, and sing the melody all at once with just one acoustic guitar? \n \nWhich brings us to the other aspect of his music that is always mentioned\, and without which the first might not be as powerful or as infectiously appealing: the joy. Yes\, joy. Because it’s one thing to play these multi-dimensional arrangements flawlessly on an acoustic guitar. But to do it with that smile for the ages\, that evidence of authentic\, unbridled delight\, is an irresistible invitation to feel his music as deeply as he does. “The joy\,” he says\, “is there always because I’m chasing it through music. Seeing the surprise in people’s eyes is worth living and working for… I can’t help but play to the people with all my heart\, which is overflowing with joy of being in that moment that I’ve worked all my life for. And here it is!” \nAlthough his musical expression is instrumental\, he comes to the guitar much more like a vocalist\, positively singing melodies through the strings. He inhabits the tunes he performs\, delivering every nuance and turn of phrase. His own songs are also illuminated always with lyrical melodies that go right to the heart\, such as his beautiful ode to his daughter\, “Angelina\,” or his great “story without words\,” “Lewis & Clark.” That they resonate so deeply without words makes sense\, as words only go so far. But music\, coming from a genuine and joyful source\, can go so much farther. Now with The Best of Tommysongs\, he brings us a complete collection of his own songs\, all richly melodic and rendered with joy in real time. \n“When I was a kid\, I wanted to be in show business. Now\, I just want to be in the happiness business. I make music\, and you get happy. That’s a good job.”—Tommy Emmanuel

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Reading and Discussion: Stephen Graham Jones\, Memorial Ride
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (MST) \nLive Via Zoom. Register HERE \nMemorial Ride is a high-speed\, ragtag chase across the American Southwest. Cooper Town\, an American Indian soldier\, has returned from the Middle East to attend hi father’s funeral\, make some quick cash off his father’s old Harley\, and spend a whirlwind weekend with his girlfriend\, Sheri Mun. However\, when Coop runs afoul of the violent John Wayne gang\, he and Sheri Mun have no choice but to twist the throttle back on that storied chopper and make tracks. In the spirit of Billy Jean\, but fully aware of Billy Jack\, Coop and Sheri Mun’s race to survive is full speed ahead with many potholes in their path. Turning the traditional Western on its head\, Memorial Ride recasts the genre as a road movie. It’s raucous\, it’s violent\, and\, scarily enough\, it might even be true. In short\, this graphic novel delivers the storytelling prowess of Stephen Graham Jones through Maria Wolf’s artwork\, and the result is a ride you’ll want to take again and again. \nFree community event \nFor more information\, please\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \nBook: $24.95 \n \nPresented by Bookworks\, History and Literary Arts Program/NHCC and UNM Press.

DESCRIPTION:12 pm (available for 48 hours)\nOn the Instituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nIn Mamen Díaz’ indie comedy Violeta no coge el ascensor\, twenty-something Violeta is spending a stifling summer in Madrid as an intern in a publishing house. Dodging the heat between affairs that only multiply her self-doubts\, she makes new friends and makes decisions—some good and some bad—as she comes to learn that “failure is more an art than a drama.” \n2019; Spanish with English subtitles; 87 minutes; not rated. \nFree community event \n \nIn November\, Instituto Cervantes collaborates with the Seville European Film Festival on the film cycle Nuevas cinefilias: Estaciones singulares. The four recent Spanish films screened in this cycle could not have been made in the past because of their language and themes—they innovate\, take risks\, and play with contemporary structure and narratives\, and in doing so\, they update the legacy of cinema and open a path for filmgoers to understand the constant changes that are taking place in society. \nSince 2018\, this film cycle has been organized by both collaborating institutions as a showcase for new Spanish cinema. \nNuevas Cinefilias\, Estaciones singulares: Film Schedule\n* November 5: Arima (Jaione Camborda\, 2019)\n* November 12: Violeta no coge el ascensor (Mamen Díaz\, 2019)\n* November 19: This Film Is About Me (Alexis Delgado\, 2019)\n* November 26: La reina de los lagartos (Burnin’ Percebes\, 2019)\nAll titles will be available on the Instituto Cervantes Vimeo channel for 48 hours\, starting at 12 pm on the day on which they are scheduled for viewing

SUMMARY:NHCC Book Club: The Wind That Lays Waste
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom\nTo join\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \n“The Wind That Lays Waste begins in the great pause before a storm. Reverend Pearson is evangelizing across the Argentinian countryside with Leni\, his teenage daughter\, when their car breaks down. This act of God or fate leads them to the workshop and home of an aging mechanic called Gringo Brauer and a young boy named Tapioca.\n \nAs a long day passes\, curiosity and intrigue transform into an unexpected intimacy between four people: one man who believes deeply in God\, morality\, and his own righteousness\, and another whose life experiences have only entrenched his moral relativism and mild apathy; a quietly earnest and idealistic mechanic’s assistant\, and a restless\, skeptical preacher’s daughter. As tensions between these characters ebb and flow\, beliefs are questioned and allegiances are tested\, until finally the growing storm breaks over the plains. \n \nSelva Almada’s exquisitely crafted debut\, with its limpid and confident prose\, is profound and poetic\, a tactile experience of the mountain\, the sun\, the squat trees\, the broken cars\, the sweat-stained shirts\, and the destroyed lives. The Wind That Lays Waste is a philosophical\, beautiful\, and powerfully distinctive novel that marks the arrival in English of an author whose talent and poise are undeniable. ” -Goodreads \nFor more information\, please\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \nFree community event

Masks are also required while inside the NHCC. \nInstituto Cervantes and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, with the collaboration of AMP Concerts and the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council\, present the first Festival Oralidad on November 18\, 20\, and 22\, 2021. The festival combines workshops\, lectures\, panel discussions\, storytelling performances\, and musical performances connected to the oral tradition and storytelling. It was created with two essential purposes: the promotion of the oral tradition of storytelling and the establishment of a collaborative relationship among artists from New Mexico\, other parts of the United States\, Spain\, and Latin America to create new works together and contribute to the advancement of the genre. \n \nNew Mexico\, where Native American cultures\, Latin American oral tradition\, and cultural traditions such as flamenco converge\, is an ideal place for a festival focused on the oral tradition\, and Instituto Cervantes is positioned to encourage this union of cultures and promote an exchange between artists of diverse origins. Over three days\, Festival Oralidad offers academic and theoretical debate\, shares the secrets of storytellers with children\, and brings together some of the most significant musicians and storytellers in the U.S. While travel restrictions this year have limited participation to artists residing in-country\, future festivals will include colleagues from Latin America and Spain. \nA reception with wine and Spanish ham will greet festival participants on the opening evening\, followed by an introduction to the three-day event by Nasario García\, a folklorist\, writer and educator\, and one of New Mexico’s foremost experts on oral tradition. He will give a talk on the state’s cultural and linguistic roots in the spoken word\, and will discuss the importance of storytelling with Silvia Grijalba\, director of the Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque and El Paso. The evening will conclude with a concert by the Nacha Mendez Trio \nNasario García\, professor emeritus of Spanish and Hispanic literatures\, holds a B.A. in Spanish\, an M.A. in Portuguese\, and a Ph.D. in 19th century Spanish literature. He has published more than 30 books educating both adults and children about the richness of New Mexico’s Spanish language and culture\, including Memorias de los viejos: Tales of the Rio Puerco; Abuelitos: Stories of the Rio Puerco Valley; Comadres: Hispanic Women of the Rio Puerco Valley; and Más antes: Hispanic Folklore of the Rio Puerco Valley. Dr. García has worked over the years to preserve the language and culture of northern New Mexico\, particularly his beloved Rio Puerco Valley\, where he grew up in the community of Ojo del Padre (Guadalupe). \nNacha Mendez combines storytelling\, music\, and song in a journey through her personal experience that speaks to her Latin blood\, Native American history\, and experience as an artist throughout Europe. Mendez grew up in the small border town of La Union in southern New Mexico\, where she began singing and playing guitar at an early age. She learned traditional ranchera singing from her grandmother and performed in border towns near El Paso. \nShe studied classical voice and electronic music at New Mexico State University before moving to New York\, where she studied flamenco guitar with Manuel Granados of the Conservatory of Music in Barcelona\, Spain. In the early 1990s\, she was a lead singer with Robert Ashley’s opera company\, touring Europe and Japan\, and has also collaborated with celebrated composer Steve Peters. \nShe has received an award from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and has been honored by the New Mexico Committee of the National Museum of Women Artists\, voted Best Female Vocalist in Santa Fe\, New Mexico in 2009 and 2010\, and awarded Best Latin Production at the New Mexico Music Awards. \nThis concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event. Originals or photos of documents with a matching ID will be accepted. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC.

SUMMARY:Film: Nuevas Cinefilias\, Estaciones singulares: This Film Is About Me
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (available for 48 hours) \nAlexis Delgado’s This Film Is About Me is a singular portrait of Renata Felicitas Soskey\, serving time in a Galician prison for the brutal murder of her neighbor. Renata sees it clearly: this film is about her—about her personality\, her charisma\, her poetry\, and her unpredictability\, and not about her crime or her punishment. The director also becomes a player as the film unfolds\, caught up in his fascination with his subject. \n2019; Spanish and German with English subtitles; 61 minutes; not recommended for children under 12.
