SUMMARY:Festival Oralidad
DESCRIPTION:Reception—6 pm\, Cayetana Romero Lobby\nIntroduction to Festival Oralidad—6:30 pm\, Wells Fargo Auditorium\nConcert\, Nacha Mendez Trio—7:30 pm\, Bank of America Theatre \nReception and festival introduction free to the public; concert tickets $17 w/ $2 discount for NHCC members\, purchase Here \nPlease note: Both the festival introduction and the concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event. Originals or photos of documents with a matching ID will be accepted. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC. \nInstituto Cervantes and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, with the collaboration of AMP Concerts and the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council\, present the first Festival Oralidad on November 18\, 20\, and 22\, 2021. The festival combines workshops\, lectures\, panel discussions\, storytelling performances\, and musical performances connected to the oral tradition and storytelling. It was created with two essential purposes: the promotion of the oral tradition of storytelling and the establishment of a collaborative relationship among artists from New Mexico\, other parts of the United States\, Spain\, and Latin America to create new works together and contribute to the advancement of the genre. \n \nNew Mexico\, where Native American cultures\, Latin American oral tradition\, and cultural traditions such as flamenco converge\, is an ideal place for a festival focused on the oral tradition\, and Instituto Cervantes is positioned to encourage this union of cultures and promote an exchange between artists of diverse origins. Over three days\, Festival Oralidad offers academic and theoretical debate\, shares the secrets of storytellers with children\, and brings together some of the most significant musicians and storytellers in the U.S. While travel restrictions this year have limited participation to artists residing in-country\, future festivals will include colleagues from Latin America and Spain. \nA reception with wine and Spanish ham will greet festival participants on the opening evening\, followed by an introduction to the three-day event by Nasario García\, a folklorist\, writer and educator\, and one of New Mexico’s foremost experts on oral tradition. He will give a talk on the state’s cultural and linguistic roots in the spoken word\, and will discuss the importance of storytelling with Silvia Grijalba\, director of the Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque and El Paso. The evening will conclude with a concert by the Nacha Mendez Trio \nNasario García\, professor emeritus of Spanish and Hispanic literatures\, holds a B.A. in Spanish\, an M.A. in Portuguese\, and a Ph.D. in 19th century Spanish literature. He has published more than 30 books educating both adults and children about the richness of New Mexico’s Spanish language and culture\, including Memorias de los viejos: Tales of the Rio Puerco; Abuelitos: Stories of the Rio Puerco Valley; Comadres: Hispanic Women of the Rio Puerco Valley; and Más antes: Hispanic Folklore of the Rio Puerco Valley. Dr. García has worked over the years to preserve the language and culture of northern New Mexico\, particularly his beloved Rio Puerco Valley\, where he grew up in the community of Ojo del Padre (Guadalupe). \nNacha Mendez combines storytelling\, music\, and song in a journey through her personal experience that speaks to her Latin blood\, Native American history\, and experience as an artist throughout Europe. Mendez grew up in the small border town of La Union in southern New Mexico\, where she began singing and playing guitar at an early age. She learned traditional ranchera singing from her grandmother and performed in border towns near El Paso. \nShe studied classical voice and electronic music at New Mexico State University before moving to New York\, where she studied flamenco guitar with Manuel Granados of the Conservatory of Music in Barcelona\, Spain. In the early 1990s\, she was a lead singer with Robert Ashley’s opera company\, touring Europe and Japan\, and has also collaborated with celebrated composer Steve Peters. \nShe has received an award from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and has been honored by the New Mexico Committee of the National Museum of Women Artists\, voted Best Female Vocalist in Santa Fe\, New Mexico in 2009 and 2010\, and awarded Best Latin Production at the New Mexico Music Awards. \nThis concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event. Originals or photos of documents with a matching ID will be accepted. Masks are also required while inside the NHCC.

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Compañía Manuel Liñán\, ¡VIVA!
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque presents Compañía Manuel Liñán in ¡VIVA!\, a song to the freedom of movement\, where the feminine essence is embraced through the masculine body\, where gender roles\, in a codified world like that of flamenco\, are broken with joy and enjoyment\, creating new terrains that\, although unexplored\, are not distant…. \n!VIVA! celebrates movement through the character of the female dancer. In a celebratory key\, Liñán proposes the plurality of the dance\, the different forms\, and the singularity of each form. And he does it with six bailaores-bailarines\, who are in charge of exploring and diving into this fascinating universe of the feminine\, seen from the masculine\, thus exposing these two identities which are both part of our own nature. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

Espina’s language delves into the roots of the unknown; sows new things; creates a universe where feminine and masculine\, humorous and dramatic fit in equal parts; and encounters human lights and shadows. A gallery of dramatic games where the woman always appears powerful\, a miscellany of sculpted images\, where space is traversed\, between beauty and ugliness\, joy and bitterness\, seclusion and sensuality\, youth and decrepitude\, all framed in a future of rhythms that move in a palo flamenco and its opposite. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Internacional: Compañía Isabel Bayón Dju Dju
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque 31 presents Compañía Isabel Bayón’s Dju Dju\, an Israel Galván creation for Isabel Bayón. \nIn an extraordinary collaboration\, avant-garde choreographer and dancer Israel Galván directs classical dancer Isabel Bayón as she reinvents herself\, exploring the demons and superstitions of the flamenco world along with her husband\, guitarist Jesús Torres\, and dancers Alicia Márquez and Nieves Casablanca. “Torres recites a litany of her superstitions; Bayón crosses herself\, or shoos off bad spirits even as she’s willfully stomping on glass. The music veers from eerie lullabies to full church-organ portentousness…. Dju Dju works ultimately because it draws on qualities close to flamenco’s heart: wayward rhythms\, unresolved dissonances\, irrational passions\, the summoning of hidden forces.” (Sanjoy Roy\, The Guardian) \nBorn in Seville\, Isabel Bayón has performed at numerous national and international festivals\, and formed her own company in 2001\, creating a series of award-winning shows. She is also a choreographer for the Spanish National Ballet and the Andalusian Dance Company\, among others\, and a teacher at the María de Ávila Higher Dance Conservatory in Madrid. She received the National Dance Award in 2013.\n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Internacional: Compañía Jesús Carmona\, Impetu’s
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque presents Compañía Jesús Carmona in Impetu’s\, an evening of extraordinary contemporary flamenco along with classic Spanish dance. \nFrom his beginnings as a dancer in other companies through the founding and maturation of his own company\, Jesús Carmona has always aspired to have his creations serve as a showcase for Spanish culture. SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Internacional: Compañía Marco Flores\, Entrar al Juego
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque presents Compañía Marco Flores in Entrar al Juego. In this contemporary and very theatrical production\, Flores manipulates space and experiments with time—slowing it down\, speeding it up\, and changing its direction to open up a temporary timeline from another world and trap people and objects in an alternative dimension. \nFlores’ first large-scale choreographic work\, DeFlamencas\, explored the female universe; his second creation\, Tránsito\, reflected his interest in looking within. Subsequently\, he examined men’s actions and relationships in Laberíntica. With this new work\, he expands his artistic focus and direction as well as the dynamics of his choreography. The creative process in Entrar al Juego\, activated by intergenerational concerns\, begins by bringing together artists of various ages and origins\, with differing techniques and experiences. Breaking with traditional conceptions of hierarchy and methodology\, Flores involves the artists in a collective composition\, where the actions of each are essential to the development of the others\, as all discover their own strategies to move\, to be still\, and to continue with the work\, both individually and as a group. Along with stage director and choreographer Juan Carlos Lérida\, he proposes to the participants in Entrar al Juego that they dance in a timeless place\, and the audience witnesses how people transform when confronted with the need to continue\, to resolve the unknown nature of that place.\n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85
