    10:30 am Suzanne Stamatov will present, “Colonial New Mexico Families: Community, Church and State 1692-1800.”  The title is from her book of the same name, which will be available after the meeting. In villages scattered across the northern reaches of Spain's New World Empire, remote from each other and from the centers of power, family mattered. In this book Suzanne M.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. The digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a (more...)

  • Ballet Folklórico de Mexico de Amalia Hernández

    7:30 pm Ballet Folklórico de México was formed in 1952 by the dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández. For six decades it has presented dances that reflect the traditional culture of Mexico, including indigenous Mesoamerica. The ensemble performs three times weekly at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. Additionally, it has toured widely and has appeared in over 80 countries, including a private performance at the White House for President and Mrs. Kennedy and command performances at the feet of the Sphinx in Egypt, bringing the (more...)

    7:15 pm Super fun Latin hip-hop and body isolation dance class with Carlota Silva! No experience necessary and all ages welcome. Carlota began dancing at the age of 2. She currently teaches jazz, hip-hop, tap, and contemporary dance at Fishback studio of dance. She coached the Viking Vikettes and is the director and choreographer for local dance company Off Broadway. She is excited to share her love of dance with our community! $5 to $10 donation suggested.   • Día de los Muertos Ofrenda Exhibit and Community Ofrenda

    10 am to 5 pm Each year the NHCC works with schools and community organizations to host an Ofrenda (altar) Installation, in celebration of Día de los Muertos. Participants’ submissions will be on display in the Domenici Education Building and the Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts at the NHCC. You are welcome to contribute to our community ofrenda (please don't bring valuables or irreplaceable photographs, reproductions are encouraged).     7 pm Beginning in October, the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series joins in the Center’s annual commemoration of Día de los Muertos, and thanks The Walt Disney Studios for permission to show the delightful Disney/Pixar musical fantasy film Coco, inspired by the Mexican celebration of that holiday, in both English and Spanish versions. A final Spanish screening is scheduled for November 1—the first day of Día de los Muertos, or All Saints Day. Tickets to the films are available at the Center one hour before each (more...)

  • First Page to Last Page Reading of Bless Me, Ultima in the NHCC Art Museum

    9 am to 8 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center will present a beginning-to-end reading of Rudolfo Anaya’s acclaimed novel, Bless Me, Ultima. The reading will take place in the NHCC Art Museum where an exhibition, La Ultima Exhibición, enters its final month. Over 40 dignitaries, New Mexico authors, youth, adults and elders (including school students) will read, each for 15 minutes, between 9 am and 8 pm.
