SUMMARY:Film: Nuevas Cinefilias\, Estaciones singulares: This Film Is About Me
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (available for 48 hours) \nAlexis Delgado’s This Film Is About Me is a singular portrait of Renata Felicitas Soskey\, serving time in a Galician prison for the brutal murder of her neighbor. Renata sees it clearly: this film is about her—about her personality\, her charisma\, her poetry\, and her unpredictability\, and not about her crime or her punishment. The director also becomes a player as the film unfolds\, caught up in his fascination with his subject. \n2019; Spanish and German with English subtitles; 61 minutes; not recommended for children under 12. \nFree community event \n \nIn November\, Instituto Cervantes collaborates with the Seville European Film Festival on the film cycle Nuevas cinefilias: Estaciones singulares. The four recent Spanish films screened in this cycle could not have been made in the past because of their language and themes—they innovate\, take risks\, and play with contemporary structure and narratives\, and in doing so\, they update the legacy of cinema and open a path for filmgoers to understand the constant changes that are taking place in society. \nSince 2018\, this film cycle has been organized by both collaborating institutions as a showcase for new Spanish cinema. \nNuevas Cinefilias\, Estaciones singulares: Film Schedule\n* November 5: Arima (Jaione Camborda\, 2019)\n* November 12: Violeta no coge el ascensor (Mamen Díaz\, 2019)\n* November 19: This Film Is About Me (Alexis Delgado\, 2019)\n* November 26: La reina de los lagartos (Burnin’ Percebes\, 2019)\nAll titles will be available on the Instituto Cervantes Vimeo channel for 48 hours\, starting at 12 pm on the day on which they are scheduled for viewing

SUMMARY:NHCC Book Club: Once I Was You: A Memoir of Love and Hate in a Torn America
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom\nTo join\, contact Dr. Patricia Marie Perea by emailing her at Patricia.perea@state.nm.us \n“In Once I Was You\, Maria shares her intimate experience growing up Mexican American on the south side of Chicago and documenting the existential wasteland of immigration detention camps for news outlets that often challenged her work. In these pages\, she offers a personal and eye-opening account of how the rhetoric around immigration has not only long informed American attitudes toward outsiders\, but also enabled willful negligence and profiteering at the expense of our country’s most vulnerable populations—charging us with the broken system we have today.\n\nThis honest and heartrending memoir paints a vivid portrait of how we got here and what it means to be a survivor\, a feminist\, a citizen\, and a journalist who owns her voice while striving for the truth. Once I Was You is an urgent call to fellow Americans to open their eyes to the immigration crisis and understand that it affects us all.” – Goodreads \nFree community event \nThe NHCC Book Club is sponsored by AARP.
