SUMMARY:On-Line Albuquerque Premiere: Conjunto Blues
DESCRIPTION:7 pm (MST) \nThe premiere performance will be on our Foundation YouTube page HERE \nThis performance\, the Albuquerque premiere of Valdez’ critically acclaimed work\, is made possible through the generous sponsorship of AARP. \nIn Conjunto Blues\, playwright\, actor\, and musician Nicolás Valdez explores the social and historical conditions that led to the development of conjunto music as an expression of cultural resistance and liberation. Centering on Valdez’ personal experience growing up in the conjunto music scene\, the work is loosely based on his relationship with his grandfather\, also an aficionado of the music. Audiences are taken through a shifting landscape of memory and reflection that is highlighted throughout by traditional music performed live by Valdez and accompanied by musicians Luis Gonzalez on bajo sexto (12-string Mexican guitar)\, Sarah Rocha on tololoche (upright bass)\, and Joaquin Abrego on batería (drums). With a cast of colorfully poignant characters\, Conjunto Blues is a deeply personal performance for viewers of all ages and backgrounds\, and one that is sure to entertain as well as educate. \n \nJoin us for three members only/donors webinars in association with the premiere of Conjunto Blues. \nFollowing the opening night performance at 7 pm on April 29\, Valdez will host a live question-and-answer session via Zoom\, during which audience members can discuss the show and ask questions about conjunto music in general. \nOn Saturday\, May 1 at 2 pm\, Valdez will present an hour-long workshop and discussion live from his home\, revolving around specific themes drawn from pre-recorded interviews and historical documentary footage that he has compiled. \nOn Sunday\, May 2 at 2 pm\, Conjunto Blues\, performance sponsor\, AARP will offer a live webinar on brain health and the arts\, including the intrinsic connection between music and memory\, the lasting effects of music on the brain\, and tools to assist in boosting brain health and wellness. \nPlease register\, with donations suggested HERE through 9 pm on Sunday\, May 2\, 2021. This workshop will explore the complexity of conjunto music’s origins and evolution and its long-term impacts on the Mexican-American community\, delving into topics including conjunto’s campesino origins\, its stylistic evolutions\, women and the recording industry\, and pachucos and the nightlife\, and including ethnographic interviews with prominent figures in the conjunto music scene. The crux of the conversation will be the way in which the evolution of conjunto music parallels that of the Mexican-American identity. \n \n“The focus of this work\, for me\, has always been to highlight the many contributions of the Mexican-American community to the cultural fabric of this country\,” says Valdez\, “and to show audiences how conjunto music\, an original and uniquely American form of musical expression\, became the soundtrack for the 20th century Mexican-American working-class experience.” \nIn Conjunto Blues\, playwright\, actor\, and musician Nicolás Valdez explores the social and historical conditions that led to the development of conjunto music as an expression of cultural resistance and liberation. Register HERE \nMax Baca’s music grew out of the harsh life of the borderland\, and the duality of borderland music—its keening beauty—remains a recurring theme in everything he does. Craig Harris and Baca have collaborated on this book which tells the story of Max Baca’s extraordinary career. \nFree community event \n \nBorn and raised in Albuquerque\, Baca founded the conjunto band\, Los Texmaniacs\, in 1997\, which incorporated elements from genres such as rock and roll and jazz while still honoring the roots of conjunto tejano. Combine a hefty helping of Tex Mex conjunto\, simmer with several parts Texas rock\, add a daring dash of well-cured blues\, and R&B riffs\, and you’ve cooked up the tasty TexManiacs groove. Baca is a legend on the bajo sexto\, a twelve string guitar-like instrument\, which customarily provides rhythm accompaniment for the button accordion\, thus creating the core of the conjunto sound. Baca has appeared on national television programs such as Conan O’ Brien\, David Letterman\, Jay Leno\, and Austin City Limits. He has also participated on ten Grammy winning projects including the double-platinum CD for the Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge (Virgin 96). Register HERE \nAs the scale and severity of violence in Latin America\, and Central America in particular\, has grown in the last decade\, scholars\, as expert witnesses\, have supported women and LGBTQ persons who have experienced gender-based\, sexual\, and gang violence in their home countries. This presentation offers a description of the asylum system and the role of expert witnesses\, focusing on the specific challenges faced by women and LGBTQ persons seeking refuge in the U.S. \nFree and open to the public \n \nKimberly Gauderman is a faculty member in the University of New Mexico History Department since 1998\, served as the Director of the UNM Latin American Studies Program for three years (2005-2008)\, and is a Faculty Affiliate of the UNM School of Law. Since 2010\, she has served as an expert witness in Latin American asylum cases\, focusing on gender-based\, sexual\, and gang violence. She is the recipient of a Scholars & Society Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies\, sponsored by the Mellon Foundation\, for the 2019/2020 academic year

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Mira Mira On the Wall: Reflecting on 20 Years of NHCC Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) turned twenty years old in 2020 and the museum now has twenty years of exhibitions to reflect on and learn from. Mira Mira On the Wall: Reflecting on 20 Years of NHCC Exhibitions recounts a selection of exhibits that have been presented over the last two decades. It examines their impact on the permanent collection\, the importance of the stories that have been told\, and celebrates the artists that have participated in shaping the identity of the museum over the years. These exhibitions have worked to expand a collective understanding of American art and identity through the lens of Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, Latinx\, and Latin American creative expression. \n \nThis exhibition is one way of holding up a mirror to the museum\, allowing staff\, artists\, volunteers\, visitors\, donors\, partners\, and community members to examine where the museum has been and its changes over time. Mira Mira On the Wall: Reflecting on 20 Years of Exhibitions recounts a selection of exhibits that have been presented over the last two decades. It examines their impact on the permanent collection\, the importance of the stories that have been told\, and celebrates the artists that have participated in shaping the identity of the museum over the years. These exhibitions have worked to expand a collective understanding of American art and identity through the lens of Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, Latinx\, and Latin American creative expression. \nDue to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the opening of Mira Mira on the Wall in the museum was postponed and a selection of artworks were presented online in a virtual exhibit. In the course of their study they also document the thousands of skilled workers who kept the locomotives in operation\, many of whom were part of the growing Hispano and Native American middle class. \nFree community event \n \nTheir critical work kept the Atchison\, Topeka\, and Santa Fe’s steam trains running and established and maintained Albuquerque’s unique character in the region. Including a generous selection of historic photographs\, Overhaul provides a glimpse into the people\, places\, culture\, and special history found in Albuquerque’s locomotive shops during the boom of steam railroading. SUMMARY:Money for Writers Workshop: Grant Writing for Latinx Writers

Register HERE \n“Beyond Teaching: Out-of-the-Box Writing Gigs and Getting Them Funded” \nThis workshop features three Latinx writers who generate income outside of teaching. They collaborate with other writers and artists\, work in journalism\, provide professional writing services\, and create innovative projects that support their careers as writers. These gigs are financially supported by foundations\, municipal agencies\, and other funders. Join us to learn more. There will be time for Q & A at the end of this session. This workshop is a response to the requests for workshops expressed by Latinx writers at the National Latinx Writers Gathering in October of 2020. Presenters: Néstor David Pastor\, Valerie Martínez\, and Raul A. Reyes. \nWorkshop fee: $20. \n \nPresenters:\nNéstor David Pastor is a writer\, editor\, and translator from Queens\, NY. His past experience includes Radio Ambulante\, Feet in 2 Worlds\, and the Center for Puerto Rican Studies\, in addition to community-based work with the Afro-Latino Festival of NYC\, Newtown Literary\, and the Loisaida Festival. Currently\, he works as an editorial assistant at the North American Congress on Latin America and managing editor of Intervenxions\, a digital publication of the Latinx Project at New York University. He is also the founding editor of Huellas\, a bilingual magazine of crónicas narrativas. He holds degrees in Spanish and English from Binghamton University\, as well as an MA in Spanish from Queens College. \nRaul A. Reyes is a journalist and television commentator in New York City. He has written for the New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, USA Today\, Christian Science Monitor\, Texas Monthly\, and NBC Latino. He has appeared on CNN\, MSNBC\, Fox News\, PBS\, NBC Nightly News and the Today Show. Graduate of Harvard University and Columbia Law School.\nRaul A.
