Fire at Sea contrasts the daily life of the native islanders\, particularly the bucolic childhood of 12-year-old Samuele\, with the danger\, misery\, and death confronting the refugees who attempt to make their way across the Strait of Sicily. Beníitez is an iconic figure in American flamenco. Her riveting story begins with the complexity of her mixed Native American and Puerto Rican heritage followed by her extraordinary journey as a young woman leaving her home on the outskirts of Taos Pueblo to study flamenco in Spain. From the inherent irony of her identity as a Native American woman striving to master the art of a culture that had colonized the Southwestern United States\, she grew into an artist driven to forge her own way in the world\, starting a business\, \, a non-profit institution\, a school\, and a professional touring company. Her illustrious career\, from appearances in film and television to stages across the world\, is an inspiration to artists\, students of history\, and seekers of core human truths. Her ability to overcome both racial and gender discrimination made her equally comfortable on the Metropolitan Opera stage as well as dancing around a gypsy campfire–all coalescing to make her story one that dances straight into the heart of what it means to be an American original. \nJaima Chevalier\, a Santa Fe native\, is the author of five books including La Conquistadora: Unveiling the History of Santa Fe’s Six Hundred Year Old Religious Icon and Nativo (with Oliver Galvan-De La Cruz). The work\, based on the novel Ardiente paciencia by Antonio Skármeta and the film Il Postino by Michael Radford\, adheres loosely to events in the life of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda\, and integrates themes of love and friendship along with political and spiritual conflict. \nLike Il Postino\, Pablo Larraín’s film Neruda is based loosely on events in the life of its subject\, at a time when Chile’s beloved poet has been forced into hiding and is being pursued by his would-be nemesis\, the police inspector Peluchonneau. Larraín describes the film as “Nerudian”—not a biopic\, despite its title\, but rather\, an “invention informed by biography.” \nWe hope that our audiences will enjoy both these explorations of the rich and complex cosmos created by the life and work of this extraordinary artist.

What brings the two together are their shared humanity and the commonalities that they discover during their time in prison. Originally Puig’s best-known novel\, Kiss of the Spider Woman was later adapted by the author for the stage\, and was subsequently made into both a film and a musical. The goal is to encourage the further study of Art Song repertoire\, which plays a vital role in sculpting classical singers. Open performances by singers and pianists from all over the state are held before a guest faculty\, including international artists and representatives from the most renowned music conservatories. Master classes and open performances for all levels of singers and collaborative pianists are open to the public. Scholarship winners are then chosen on the basis of talent and artistic achievement; the scholarship awards\, from and for the community\, are presented at a final concert and reception. Over $10\,000 in awards\, through a sponsorship by the Meredith Foundation and the generosity of individual donors\, go to the deserving applicants. \n \nIsabel Bayrakdarian\nThis year\, for the first time ever\, Vocal Artistry goes virtual! For the 11th Annual Art Song Festival of New Mexico\, Canciones Españoles\, 59 students of singing and piano have submitted applications online to be adjudicated by international artists in Spanish Art Song. Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian\, celebrated in opera houses and concert halls around the world\, will be adjudicating all the college singers. As the virtual format does not include a final award concert and reception\, the scholarship awards will be sent to the performers and displayed online. \nMatthew Valverde & André García-Nuthmann\n“Dos Tenores\,” a concert featuring Matthew Valverde\, André García-Nuthmann\, and pianist Kristin Ditlow\, has been rescheduled for September 4 at 7:30 pm.  It will be filmed in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and can be seen virtually live. It is presented in collaboration with the National Hispanic Cultural Center as part of the Bank of America Free Film Series. \nEva menos Candela\, another short feature film by Ruth Caudeli\, follows the filmmaker’s Porque no\, shown as the opening film in this series.
