SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Dolores
DESCRIPTION:October 26\, 29\, 31 & November 2\, 2025\n2:00 pm Sundays\, 7:30 pm Wednesday & Friday \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nMusic / Nicolás Lell Benavides\nLibretto / Marella Martin Koch \n1968. The Delano grape strike is dragging into its third year. Farmworkers in California are building solidarity that transcends race and\nlanguage. Bobby Kennedy is running for president. Tricky Dick is on the radio promising discipline. Dolores Huerta is holding the movement together with one hand. With the other\, she dials home\, again\, to say goodnight to children she hasn’t seen in weeks. \nShe’s not a symbol. Not yet.\nShe’s just doing the work. \nDolores is an opera that floats between the real and the imagined\, memory and nightmare. Composer Nicolás Lell Benavides and librettist Marella Martin Koch stitch history into something fragile and feverish. There are sacred chants\, electric guitar pulsations\, bossa nova hallucinations. \nLabor icon Dolores Huerta helped build a union out of dust and righteous anger. She walked the fields\, held the line\, made the calls. With César Chávez and Larry Itliong\, she shaped a movement that reached the ears of presidents but never lost sight of the people bent over the vines. The work didn’t stop. It never does. That’s the cost of believing another world is possible. \n¡SÍ SE PUEDE! \nCommissioned and Co-produced by Opera Southwest\, West Edge Opera and San Diego Opera\, presented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \nPiano tuning and preparation are provided by Albuquerque Piano Services: albuquerque-piano-tuning.com\nRunning Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes including one intermission \nSUNG IN ENGLISH\n-English translations are projected above the stage for all operas- \n45 Minutes before curtain\, Opera Southwest offers our “Opera Insights” pre-opera talks. These take place in either Bank of America\nTheatre or Wells Fargo Auditorium\, accessible from the shared lobby with the Albuquerque Journal Theatre. \nFor more information on Opera Southwest please click HERE. \nEnhance your weeknight opera-going experience with Taste of Opera – a pre-show dinner and relaxed conversation with Opera Southwest artistic staff members on Wednesday\, October 29\, 2025. SUMMARY:OSW: NM Symphonic Chorus: Mozart – C Minor Mass K 427
DESCRIPTION:2:00 pm \nOpera Southwest Presents: The New Mexico Symphonic Chorus \nMozart – Mass in C Minor\, K. 427\nSymphony No. 40 in G Minor\, K. 550 \nTwo pillars of Mozart’s mature style: one sacred\, one symphonic. \nModeled on the grandeur of Bach’s Mass in B Minor and the Salzburg ceremonial tradition\, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor blends contrapuntal rigor with operatic brilliance. Though unfinished\, it stands among the most exalted sacred works of the Classical era. Paired with the storm-lit urgency of the G Minor Symphony\, this program reveals the expressive breadth of Mozart’s late style. Featuring soloists Lindsay Ohse\, Amanda Crider\, \nBernard Holcomb\, and Javier Ortiz. \nFor more information on the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus and Opera Southwest please click HERE. \n\n*The event is a rental event not an NHCC production. SUMMARY:OSW: NM Symphonic Chorus: Brahms – Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 15\, 2026\n2:00 pm \nOpera Southwest Presents: The New Mexico Symphonic Chorus \nBrahms – Requiem \nEin deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem)\nPresented in Spanish translation \nBrahms did not set a Latin mass. He called his great work “Ein deutsches Requiem—A German Requiem” – but wrote to a colleague that he would have preferred to call it “A Human Requiem.” \nHis intention was clear: this is music for the living\, not the dead. Not bound to any single dogma\, Brahms bypassed conventional liturgy to weave together scripture that speaks to sorrow\, love\, and release. Just three years after its premiere\, the work was performed in English with the composer’s support. \nIn that spirit of openness and consolation\, we present the Requiem in Spanish. \nFor more information on the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus and Opera Southwest please click HERE. \n$22\, $37\, $52\, $69 & $89 w/ discounts for anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. SUMMARY:Film Documentary: Green is the New Red (De la guerre froide à la guerre verte)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 2\, 2026\n12:00 pm \nNHCC | Bank of America Theatre \nNHCC presents a series of documentaries about environmental hardships from the Southwest throughout Latin America. These matinee film screenings pair perfectly with a visit to the Visual Arts Museum before or after. Explore the subject matter of environmental justice through multiple mediums in one afternoon. \nThrough a critical recounting of Operation Condor\, a coordinated campaign of political repression across Latin America during the 1970s\, filmmaker Anna Recalde Miranda locates the roots of Paraguay’s current ecological disaster. As part of this campaign\, the country’s right-wing dictatorship subjected political dissidents— leftists\, intellectuals\, union leaders\, peasants\, even children—to surveillance\, torture\, kidnappings\, assassinations and land grabs. Evidence of these unlawful actions can be found within documents in the Archives of Terror but can also be witnessed across the nation’s vast fields of soy\, which are sprayed with agrochemicals and grown in the interest of multinational food corporations. In possession of its own form of record keeping\, the soil tells a story of decimated insect populations\, worsening droughts\, displaced Indigenous peoples and landless farmers. A documentary that unites land sovereignty with human rights in chilling\, uncompromising fashion\, DE LA GUERRE FROIDE À LA GUERRE VERTE reveals the historical conditions that have allowed the political and economic priorities of few to take place over sustaining forms of life for all. (Winnie Wang) \nDirector: Anna Recalde Miranda | 2024 | 1h 45m \nFree Community Event \nRESERVE YOUR TICKETS HERE!
