SUMMARY:Celebrating the Life of Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 5 pm \nJoin the National Hispanic Cultural Center in celebrating the life of Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes on October 8\, 2016\, in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre and Cayetana Romero Lobby\, both within the NHCC’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts. \nDr. Zuniga Forbes was born on June 17\, 1938\, in Carlsbad\, New Mexico\, and passed on August 28\, 2015. The eldest of eight children and mother of two\, Dr. Zuniga Forbes was a remarkable woman who cared deeply about her family and community. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of New Mexico in 1960\, and masters degrees in nursing and public policy — one from the Oregon Health and Sciences University in 1966\, and one from the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health in 1972. She worked as a public school nurse\, then became assistant director of health services at Portland State University before completing her doctorate in educational policy and management from the University of Oregon in 1992. Orcilia spent a distinguished\, four decade-long career in higher education administration. She served as Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Affairs at Portland State University before returning to her alma mater in 1989\, to become Vice-President of Student Affairs and later\, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at the University of New Mexico. She returned to Oregon in 1998 to serve as Vice-President of University Advancement at Oregon State University\, retiring in 2004.\nFree public event \n \nDr. Zuniga Forbes also served on the boards of many community\, health\, cultural and civic organizations\, including the Hispanic Chambers of Commerce in both Albuquerque and Portland\, Providence Health and Services System\, Foundations for A Better Oregon/Chalkboard Project\, the University of New Mexico Foundation\, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation. In 1991\, she received the MANA de Albuquerque’s Brindis a la Mujer Hispana Award\, and the NAACP Martin Luther King Jr. Award. In 2009\, University of New Mexico’s Alumni Association honored her with the Bernard S. Rodey Award for her contributions as an alumna. Orcilia is survived by her daughter Eryn\, son Bryan\, daughter-in-law Colleen and granddaughter Sabina. \nIn lieu of flowers\, contributions may be made to the Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes Memorial Fund: amando los ninos\, with the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation\, for the benefit of the NHCC’s education program.

SUMMARY:Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage
DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nFantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage features the fantastical creations of four artists whose works toy with space and expand the parameters of collage. The artists\, Nick Abdalla\, Cynthia Cook\, Carlos Quinto Kemm\, and Rachel Muldez\, collect objects and images that populate the day-to-day but often go unnoticed. They then reframe them as part of a new imaginative whole. The works in this exhibition offer opportunities to contemplate how fantasy and the imaginary inform daily life as well as the historical and contemporary climate of Hispanic and Latina/o art more broadly. \nSpace and scale are key components in each artist’s work. Each artist interacts with space both by changing the setting that encompasses their work\, as well as by creating a new world within the object. From delicate and intimate scenes to sizable\, yet graceful sculptures\, the magic is in the details as much as it permeates the broader environment created by the artworks.

DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nFormed as a flamenco quartet in Barcelona in 2004\, Las Migas now performs a repertoire of “Mediterranean music\,” including lively Latin rhythms and pensive ballads. The members\, Alba Carmona\, Marta Robles\, Alicia Grillo and Roser Loscos\, come from four cities spanning both the geography of Spain and its cultural diversity—Barcelona\, Sevilla\, Córdova and Lérida. The group has headlined at major theatres and world music festivals throughout Europe; the upcoming tour is its first in the U.S. Their new show\, recently launched\, begins with an intimate\, personal approach and builds in emotional intensity\, showcasing the exquisite\, heartfelt style that has always characterized Las Migas’ music. DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nArturo Madrid\, Distinguished Professor of the Humanities\, Trinity University\n-In The Country of Empty Crosses: The Story of a Hispano Protestant Family in Catholic New Mexico \nJoin Dr. Arturo Madrid\, Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Trinity University for a talk on “In The Country of Empty Crosses: The Story of a Hispano Protestant Family in Catholic New Mexico”. This La Canoa: Legacy Talks presentation will explore Dr. Madrid’s remembrances of his Hispano Protestant family in Catholic New Mexico\, and the themes of place\, culture\, and belonging. \nA native of New Mexico and a graduate of the University of New Mexico (1960)\, Dr. Madrid holds a Ph.D. degree in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from UCLA. He is the Norine R. and T. Frank Murchison Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Trinity University and the recipient of the Charles Frankel Prize in the Humanities in 1996\, awarded by the National Endowment of the Humanities. Prior to joining the faculty of Trinity University in 1993\, Madrid served as the founding president of the Tomás Rivera Center\, the nation’s first institute for policy studies on Latino issues\, a position he held from 1984 to 1993.\nFree public event \n \nThe La Canoa Legacy Series features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. Like la canoa—referring in New Mexican Spanish to several utilitarian objects used to receive and transport people and resources and thus provide a service to the community—these talks are meant to serve the community by presenting new or overlooked information about our region to interested audiences. We want them to transport us to new understandings \nof our region and its rich cultural and historical inheritance\, and to move the conversation back and forth in rich dialogue between presenters and audience members. \nThe talk will be held in the History and Literary Arts Building-Library on Saturday\, October 15\, 2016 at 2pm.

DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm — 7:30 pm \nSalud y Sabor\, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network\, Street Food Institute\, and the NHCC\, is a free evening of food\, art\, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition\, cooking\, healthy lifestyles\, and culture. \nOnce a month\, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh\, locally grown ingredients\, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults\, health screenings\, and live entertainment. Walking into his art space is almost like entering a larger-than-life version of one of his sculptures as twisting shapes and materials sprawl across the floor and wall space. Abdalla is a former professor of art studio at the University of New Mexico and his work is featured in the NHCC Art Museum exhibition\, “Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldy Collage”.
