SUMMARY:Film: Berlanga cumple cien años\, Plácido
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (MST) \nAvailable for 48 hours \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nIn Berlanga’s 1961 film Plácido\, an impoverished truck driver in rural Spain becomes involved in a Christmas Eve “Invite a poor person to dinner” event sponsored by a cookware manufacturer. The fast-paced\, darkly comic farce takes a satirical look at the true meaning of charity\, contrasting charity from the head—the cold\, calculated kind practiced by a hypocritical upper class—with charity from the heart. \nSpain; 1961; Spanish with English subtitles; 85 minutes; not rated. \nFree community event \n \nLuis García Berlanga is one of the most renowned directors in the history of Spanish cinema. His long and fruitful film career\, his unmistakable creative hallmarks\, his corrosive humor\, and his work in directing some of the great classics of the 20th century all merit the tribute of this on-line film series\, presented on the centenary of his birth. In June\, Instituto Cervantes showcases four films that represent the trajectory of Berlanga’s career and demonstrate his evolution as a filmmaker. \nBerlanga cumple cien años: Film Schedule\nJune 4: Esa pareja feliz (Luis García Berlanga & Juan Antonio Bardem\, 1951)\nJune 11: Calabuch (Luis García Berlanga\, 1956)\nJune 18: Plácido (Luis García Berlanga\, 1961)\nJune 25: Patrimonio nacional (Luis García Berlanga\, 1981)

SUMMARY:Film: Berlanga cumple cien años\, Patrimonio nacional
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (MST) \nAvailable for 48 hours \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nThe 1981 film Patrimonio nacional is the second in Berlanga’s “trilogía Nacional\,”co-written late in his career with acclaimed screenwriter Rafael Azcona. It is preceded by La escopeta nacional and followed by Nacional III. After the death of Franco in 1975 and the restoration of the monarchy\, the Marquis of Leguineche returns with his son to his palace in the heart of Madrid\, intending to regain his position among the city’s aristocracy\, and gain access to the king’s inner circle\, following decades of voluntary exile. His estranged wife\, however\, has been ensconced in the palace for over 40 years\, loathes both her husband and her son\, and has no intention of leaving. When the Marquis plots to have her committed\, a variety of eccentric characters pop in and out of the palace in this sardonic and surreal commentary on the opportunism and decadence of the Spanish upper classes post-Franco. \nSpain; 1981; Spanish with English subtitles; 110 minutes; rated PG-13. \nFree Community event \n \nLuis García Berlanga is one of the most renowned directors in the history of Spanish cinema. SUMMARY:Film:Te estoy amando locamente\, LGTBI+ Short Film Series: Una dedicatoria a lo bestia
DESCRIPTION:8 pm (MST) \nAvailable for 48 hours \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nUna dedicatoria a lo bestia\, a 2019 documentary by Nucbeade (the collective formed by artists QuielaNuc and Andrea Beade)\, focuses on a variety of objects found at the headquarters in San Fernando de Henares of the Patronato de Protección a la Mujer. This internment center for young women ages 13 to 21 was in operation from 1944 to 1985. The filmmakers’ use of documentary as an archaeological exercise\, uncovering evidence of the daily reality experienced at the site\, offers valuable insights into an uncomfortable and little-known part of recent Spanish history\, and raises ongoing questions. Can evidence of resistance and rebellion be found in a space that was constructed for the repression of female sexuality? What memories are activated by these relics\, and how can they be integrated into the historical record of the Franco regime and Spain’s transition to democracy? \n2019; Spanish with English subtitles; 10 minutes; not rated. \nFree community event \n \nDuring the month of July\, in a collaboration with film distributor Marvin & Wayne\, the Vimeo channel of Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque hosts Te estoy amando locamente\, LGTBI+ Short Film Series. The series comprises eight different stories by eight filmmakers\, showcasing a remarkable variety of cinematic language while dealing specifically\, but not only\, with issues of gender identity\, same sex love\,and transsexuality. These personal reflections\, testimonies\, and portraits present viewers with realities that are generally underrepresented in cinema. Taking its name from a song popularized by Las Grecasin the 1970s\, Te estoy amando locamente is presented in collaboration with the National Hispanic Cultural Center as part of the Bank of America Free Film Series. \nTe estoy amando locamente programming:\n* Tuesday\, July 6: Una dedicatoria a lo bestia (Nucbeade\, 2019)\n* Friday\, July 9: Después también (Carla Simón\, 2019)\n* Tuesday\, July 13: Su (Laia Foguet\, 2019)\n* Friday\, July 16: Victor XX (Ian de la Rosa\, 2015)\n* Tuesday\, July 20: Cantando en las azoteas (Enric Ribes\, 2017)\n* Friday\, July 23: Snap (Felipe Elgueta & Ananké Pereira\, 2018)\n* Tuesday\, July 27: Alma (Santiago León Cuéllar\, 2018)\n* Friday\, July 30: El cuerpo de la mujer sin sombra (Tamara García Iglesias\, 2021)
