SUMMARY:¡Globalquerque!: International Cinema Series: The Square (Sweden)
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nA prestigious Stockholm museum’s chief art curator finds himself in times of both professional and personal crisis as he attempts to set up a controversial new exhibit. \nRespected and contemporary art museum curator Christian\, a devoted father of two who is divorced\, drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next exhibit is “The Square”\, an installation which invites passersby to altruism\, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. Meanwhile\, the museum’s PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for “The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian\, as well as the museum\, into an existential crisis. \n2017; Written and Directed by Ruben Östlund; 151 min; Swedish\, Danish English\, not rated \nFree community event. SUMMARY:Our Lady of the Tortilla
DESCRIPTION:Thursday-Sunday\, September 8-11\, 2022\n7:30pm on Thursday\, Friday and Saturday\n2pm on Sunday \nSandia Performing Arts Company and the NHCC present Our Lady of the Tortilla by Luis Santeiro\, directed by Rayrey Griego. \nThe Cruz family is volatile even in the best of times. On this particular day\, Nelson\, the youngest son\, enters the house in a panic to hide the more obvious religious relics from the sight of his “gringo” girlfriend\, who is visiting for the weekend. Nelson’s mother\, Dahlia\, is obsessed with retrieving her husband from his new girlfriend; Eddie\, her elder son\, shows up in a van with his failed life and pregnant girlfriend. But the “real” pandemonium is caused by sweet\, long-suffering Dolores\, Dahlia’s old-maid sister\, when she sees the face of the Holy Virgin in a tortilla. This miracle brings hordes of believers and reporters to camp out on the Cruz’s lawn to await further miracles. As the family struggles with beliefs and conflicts\, old and new\, the endurance of family love is revealed to be the real miracle. \n$22 w/$2 discount for NHCC foundation members

SUMMARY:Writing Workshop by Emma Pérez: “Emotional Truths: A Queer Chicanx Approach”
DESCRIPTION:10:00 a.m. \nJoin us for a writing workshop led by author Emma Pérez: “Emotional Truths: A Queer Chicanx Approach” \nYou have an idea for a story. How do you begin? What can you use from your own life experiences to tell your story and bring your character to life? \nIn this workshop\, we will experiment with scenes that tap into your emotional truths to write your story. Touching\, sincere honesty provides readers with feelings they may link to their own lives even if the story is unfamiliar. Much of Dr. Pérez’s work focuses on queer Chicanx characters who are not represented in fiction\, films\, and other media. In doing so\, she attempts to show love\, or greed\, or revenge that may resonate for any reader\, just as she does when she writes white cis-male characters that she doesn’t embody. By tapping into emotional truths\, writers can write stories with a diverse group of characters. In other words\, getting to the core of a character is often through a journey of truths that feel real. Let’s have fun while we write a few emotional truths together. \nFree community event. Please register here. \n \n \nDr. Pérez earned a PhD in history from the University of California\, Los Angeles. In 2017\, she joined the University of Arizona as a Research Social Scientist at the Southwest Center and a Professor in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies. Pérez has published fiction\, essays\, and the history monograph\, The Decolonial Imaginary: Writing Chicanas into History (1999). Pérez’s first novel\, Gulf Dreams\, was published in 1996 and is considered one of the first Chicanx queer/lesbian novels in print. Her second novel\, Forgetting the Alamo\, Or\, Blood Memory (2009) earned awards including the Isherwood Writing Grant (2009). Her novel\, Electra’s Complex (2015)\, is a mystery set in a college with a history professor as protagonist. A collection of previously published essays and poems\, Queering the Border\, is forthcoming in December 2022 and Chronicle of a Shifter is forthcoming in 2023. \nGenerously supported by: United Way

SUMMARY:¡Cine Magnifico! The Last Movie (USA)
DESCRIPTION:5:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.- Film Screening \n6:45 p.m. Talk with journalist Fietta Jarque \nDennis Hopper’s second feature film after making his directorial debut with Easy Rider. The Last Movie (1971) was shot in Peru and edited at the artist’s home in Taos (New Mexico). \nConsciously self-reflexive and co-written by Hopper and Rebel Without a Cause screenwriter Stewart Stern. The Last Movie follows a Hollywood movie crew in the midst of making a western in a remote Peruvian village. When production wraps\, Hopper\, as the baleful stuntman Kansas\, remains\, attempting to find redemption in the isolation of Peru and the arms of a former prostitute. Meanwhile\, the local Indians have taken over the abandoned set and begun to stage a ritualistic re-enactment of the production – with Kansas as their sacrificial lamb. \n1971; 108 min; Color; English\, Rated R \nFree Community Event \nNote: Tickets for this and other Cine Magnifico showings will be available at the door one hour prior to the screening. \nAmong the most storied productions of the New Hollywood Era\, Hopper was given carte blanche by Universal for his next directorial feature after the tremendous commercial success of Easy Rider. The writer-director-star took the money and ran – literally – staging The Last Movie in Peru at farthest remove from the Hollywood machine\, with an on-screen entourage in tow that included Kris Kristofferson\, Julie Adams\, Stella Garcia\, Peter Fonda\, Dean Stockwell\, Toni Basil\, Russ Tamblyn\, Michelle Phillips and director Samuel Fuller. \nAfter the movie\, talk with the Peruvian journalist and writer based in Spain\, Fietta Jarque\, author of the book “Where Dennis Hopper lost his poncho”\, which tells the story behind The Last Movie. \nJarque began working in cultural journalism at Oiga magazine and El Observador newspaper. She has lived in Spain since 1984 and in the same year she was hired as editor of the Culture pages of the newspaper El País\, where she remained until 2013. She has published the books Entrevista con los ángeles (1995)\, co-authored with journalist Rosa Rivas; the novel Yo me perdono (1998); and the interview book Cómo piensan los artistas (2015).
