SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos: Lesson Plans
DESCRIPTION:Día de los Muertos is observed on November 1st and 2nd in many countries across Latin American. The celebration is the result of a blending of Catholic Spanish traditions with Indigenous customs and beliefs. It is believed that on Día de los Muertos the veil between the spirit world and real world is lifted long enough for the souls of the deceased to reunite with their families and friends. Those who celebrate Día de los Muertos welcome home the spirits of lost loved ones with music\, food\, offerings\, and other colorful visuals traditions that vary from country to country and region to region. \nIn honor of Día de los Muertos\, we have developed a series of lesson plans that celebrate several of the visual traditions unique to this colorful Latin American holiday. Join us in making a tapete de arena like the ones found in Oaxaca\, México\, in crafting a barrilete inspired by the giant kites that soar over the cities of Santiago Sacatepéquez and Sumpango\, Guatemala\, or in designing a myth-based costume worthy of La Calabiuza in Tonacatapeque\, El Salvador. How does a Mexican-American\, the son of poor immigrants\, leave his border home and move to the heart of gringo America? How does he adapt to the worlds of wealth\, elite universities\, the rush and power of New York City? How does he make peace with a stern old-fashioned father who has only known hard field labor his whole life? With echoes of Dreiser’s American Tragedy and Fitzgerald’s Gatsby\, Troncoso tells his luminous stories through the lens of an exile adrift in the 21st century\, his characters suffering from the loss of culture and language\, the loss of roots and home as they adapt to the glittering promises of new worlds which ultimately seem so empty. A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son is the recipient of a Silver Award for Multicultural Adult Fiction from Foreword Reviews Book of the Year Awards\, and a Best of Texas 2019 by Lone Star Literary Life. \n \nSergio Troncoso is the author of The Last Tortilla and Other Stories and Crossing Borders: Personal Essays\, and the novels The Nature of Truth and From This Wicked Patch of Dust. He has taught at the Yale Writers’ Workshop for many years. A Fulbright scholar and winner of numerous literary awards\, Troncoso was inducted into the Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Hall of Fame and the Texas Institute of Letters. He was born in El Paso\, Texas\, and attended Harvard College and Yale University\, where he earned graduate degrees in international relations and philosophy.

DESCRIPTION:7 pm\nMuseum of International Folk Art Facebook page HERE \nEvery year the NHCC holds its annual Despedida (Farewell) to celebrate Día de los Muertos with music\, poetry\, and hands-on art at this time-honored community gathering. Unfortunately\, with the current health restrictions\, this year’s Despedida is another wonderful in-person event that has been canceled. We are going to miss our ofrendas around the NHCC campus\, as well as the music\, poetry\, traditional hot chocolate mexicano\, pan de muerto\, and the opportunity to share our heartfelt memories with you\, our familia. \nBut we can still celebrate\, and we hope you will join our friends at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) for a virtual Día de los Muertos concert featuring our friends Carol and Leila—Las Flores del Valle of Albuquerque. \nFree community event \n \nCarol Vigil and Leila Flores-Dueñas comprise a New Mexico women’s dueto\, whose smooth harmonies are reminiscent of the many hermanas duos that became famous during the 1960s. These groups helped form the lasting harmony structures of today’s U.S./Mexico Borderlands music scene. Accompanied by multi-talented musician and cultural anthropologist David F. Garcia\, Las Flores del Valle aim to preserve and share the nuances of the many musical genres that are representative of their family histories. \nLas Flores del Valle have shared their talents at venues such as the Gene Autry Theater in Los Angeles and Universidad Pedadógica Nacional in México City\, as well as the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This has allowed them to showcase their forte of preserving cultural traditions and Southwest history through the arts. They are also known for their presentations on life along the U.S./Mexico border\, covering topics such as the role of corridos (stories told in song) in Mexican and Southwestern music\, soldaderas of the Mexican Revolution\, Día de los Muertos\, and women’s roles in Borderland music.

The Shoulders We Stand On traces the complex history of bilingual education in New Mexico\, covering Spanish\, Diné\, and Pueblo languages. The book focuses on the formal establishment of bilingual education infrastructure and looks at the range of contemporary challenges facing the educational environment today. \n \nThe book’s contributors highlight particular actions\, initiatives\, and people that have made significant impacts on bilingual education in New Mexico\, and they place New Mexico’s experience in context with other states’ responses to bilingual education. The book also includes an excellent timeline of bilingual education in the state. The Shoulders We Stand On is the first book to delve into the history of bilingual education in New Mexico and to present New Mexico’s leaders\, families\, and educators who have pioneered program development\, legislation\, policy\, evaluation\, curriculum development\, and teacher preparation in the field of bilingual multicultural education at state and national levels. \nRebecca Blum Martínez is Professor of Bilingual Education in the Department Language Literacy and Sociocultural Studies at the University of New Mexico\, where she specializes in bilingualism\, second language learning and language maintenance and revitalization in language minority communities—particularly Spanish-speaking and American Indian populations. \nMary Jean Habermann López’ leadership in bilingual education spans more than 40 years\, including directing the New Mexico and Title VII Bilingual/Multicultural Education Program for 15 years. During her tenure at the New Mexico Department of Education\, some of Habermann López’ accomplishments include initiating the first dual language immersion programs in the state\, establishing agreements with ministers of education in Mexico for professional development and teacher exchanges\, and assisting with policy development for the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Office of Civil Rights. \nFor more information please click HERE

Since the dawn of time\, humans have had to face adversity to survive.Viruses and disease are\, sadly\, part of that history and integral to the human experience. Pandemics and epidemics are part of the historical landscape.As early as the ancient Greeks\, a fever killed most of Athens; the plague of the 1300s killed off one third of the European population; and in 1918 the world was in the grip of Spanish Flu. New Mexico was not immune to such outbreaks. State Historian Rob Martínez takes a look at how epidemics and pandemics impacted New Mexico through the centuries. \nFree\, Registration Required \n \n\nState Historian Rob Martínez is a native New Mexican from Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on New Mexico history. DESCRIPTION:3 pm \nFree community event on the NHCC YouTube Channel HERE \nOn the wings of melody\, rhythm\, and poetry\, ¡Música del Corazón! concerts\, featuring new groups and different traditions each year\, tell us as much about our past as about our future. The concerts honor the contributions of John Donald Robb\, Sr.\, former dean of UNM’s College of Fine Arts and a recognized music pioneer\, and are dedicated in memory of his son\, John Donald Robb\, Jr.\, a driving force in the development of the UNM John Donald Robb Musical Trust. \nThe seventh annual John D. Robb\, Jr. concert will be an online virtual presentation featuring Frank McCulloch\, solo voice and guitar; La Mariachi\, with Lorenzo Martínez\, Larry Martínez\, Miguel Ojeda\, Joseph Santiago\, and José Carrillo; and Flamenco artists Vicente Griego\, Eloy Gonzales\, and Javier Saume Mazzei. \n \nThere will also be a panel discussion led by UNM Distinguished Professor Emeritus Enrique Lamadrid with Marisol Encinias\, Executive Director of the National Institute of Flamenco\, and New Mexico State Historian Rob Martínez. \nEnjoy New Mexico’s talent presenting Mariachi and Flamenco with a Nuevomexicano twist\, and learn about how these forms have developed to become part of our rich and ever-growing cultural heritage. \nBy most historical accounts\, Mariachi and Flamenco first took root in the fertile musical landscape of New Mexico by the mid-twentieth century. Their intertwined music and dance have inspired the people and resonated deeply with us. What is it about Mariachis that inspires cultural pride and respect? Why do we identify with the defiance and cultural resilience of the Gitanos—the Spanish gypsies? After four generations\, both traditions have fully naturalized here. At this point\, we cannot imagine New Mexico without them. Mariachi has expanded beyond the regions of Jalisco and Michoacán to become a national treasure. The same is true of Flamenco as it spread from Andalucía to the north\, and then to the world as a symbol of Spain. ¡Que vivan!

Designed by Trama\, coordinator of women’s festivals in Spain\, the series celebrates the talented female directors working in this format with screenings of four very different short films—two dramatic works\, one documentary\, and one montage. \nA young man helps an old lady carry her laundry up to her house. Once inside\, she seems reluctant to let him go. The environment in which everyday life goes on always has its lights and shadows\, and appearances are often deceiving. This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award winning artist\, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. This workshop is for all levels of experience in an informal setting.  Annette will demonstrate as well as answer questions. We hope you will join us every month on the third Friday\, for this virtual stitch-a-long. SUMMARY:Tertulia Histórica Albuquerque: Illuminating New Mexico: A History of Luminarias and Farolitos
DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MST)\nLive via Zoom \nRegister in advance for this meeting HERE. \n\nState Historian Rob Martínez examines the fascinating origins of these uniquely New Mexican cultural expressions. Before there was a Christmas tree\, mistletoe\, egg nog or Santa Claus\, there were luminarias and farolitos lighting the dark paths for ancient New Mexicans\, commemorating that long ago tradition of High Mass at midnight. Like most New Mexican traditions\, these lights\, like Las Posadas\, reach back deep into a rich Catholic tradition that is a blend of Spanish\, Puebloan\, Mexican\, and American influences that are still vibrant today. Add the contributions of Asians from places like China and you have a very unique New Mexico religious expression that illuminates New Mexico like no other tradition. State Historian Rob Martínez takes us on a journey to discover where these sacred lights came from. \nFree\, Registration Required \n\n \nState Historian Rob Martínez is a native New Mexican from Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on New Mexico history. Rob was a research assistant at the Vargas Project\, learning research skills and paleography\, abilities that would serve him well as a historian. Before becoming state historian in 2019\, he was deputy state historian for six years at the New Mexico State Records Center and Archives.
