SUMMARY:Film: Cortos en Femenino Film Series: Quand j'étais petit
DESCRIPTION:12 pm \nOnline screening will be available on the Cervantes Institute’s Vimeo channel for 48 hours\, starting at 1 pm on Monday\, December 28\, 2020.\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nFree \nInstituto Cervantes-Albuquerque and the NHCC present the Cortos en femenino film series during the month of December\, a month dedicated to cortometraje (short subjects) with “[ED+C] El día más corto”—the shortest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere. Designed by Trama\, coordinator of women’s festivals in Spain\, the series celebrates the talented female directors working in this format with screenings of four very different short films—two dramatic works\, one documentary\, and one montage. \nElena Molina‘s documentary Quand j’étais petit is the story of N’Sele Malone\, as well as the story of childhood in many African countries\, where violence and helplessness are often unavoidable. Now one of the most renowned puppeteers in West Africa\, Malone uses the marionettes that he constructs in his Burkina Faso workshop to free and transform his early memories. The film is a fable illuminating the future\, through the magic of the story and the timeless ability of stories to teach us how to live and grow. \n \n2015; French with English subtitles; 12 minutes; not rated. \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here. \nCortos en Femenino Film Series:\n* Dúctiles (2018; Spain; Marisa Benito; Spanish; 3 minutes)\n* Centrifugado (2018; Spain; Mireia Noguera; Spanish; 11 minutes)\n* No me despertéis (2018; Sara Fantova; Euskera & Spanish; 21 minuets)\n* Quand j’étais petit (2015; Elena Molina; French; 12 minutes)

SUMMARY:Querencia Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (MTS) \nLive via Zoom \n10 registered writers reading from our Querenica Writing Workshop will be working through out January 2020 creating poetry\, fiction and nonfiction inspired by the theme of “querencia” and the anthology\, Querencia: Reflections on the New Mexico Homeland\, edited by Levi Romero\, Vanessa Fonseca-Chavez and Spencer Herrera (UNM Press 2020). The workshop will culminate in a public reading on February 20\, 2021. \nFree event with registration \n \nNew Mexico cultural envoy Juan Estevan Arellano\, to whom this work is dedicated\, writes that querencia “is that which gives us a sense of place\, that which anchors us to the land\, that which makes us a unique people\, for it implies a deeply rooted knowledge of place\, and for that reason we respect it as our home.” \nThis sentiment is echoed in the foreword by Rudolfo Anaya\, in which he writes that “querencia is love of home\, love of place.” This collection of both deeply personal reflections and carefully researched studies explores the New Mexico homeland through the experiences and perspectives of Chicanx and indigenous/Genízaro writers and scholars from across the state. The importance of querencia for each contributor is apparent in their work and their ongoing studies\, which have roots in the culture\, history\, literature\, and popular media of New Mexico. Be inspired and enlightened by these essays and discover the history and belonging that is querencia.

SUMMARY:Virtual Screening & Discussion: Con Alma
DESCRIPTION:7 pm (MST)\nThis event can be viewed AMP Concerts website HERE \nCon Alma: Exploring the Creative Process with Paola Prestini & Magos Herrera \nScreening of videos from the Con Alma project\, including a world premiere video\, La Creación de las Aves (The Creation of the Birds)\, followed by a live on-line discussion and open Q&A session with Paola Prestini and Magos Herrera\, moderated by Cristina Baccin from KUNM’s Raices program. The discussion will be hosted by the National Hispanic Cultural Center via Zoom\, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes de Albuquerque and UNM’s Latin America and Iberian Institute. Prestini and Herrera will discuss the creative process\, the social engagement\, and the creation of the virtual event. \nDonations will be accepted on the AMP Concerts webpage \n \nCon Alma is an album and live digital experience of original works by composer Paola Prestini and vocalist and composer Magos Herrera\, along with some classics from the Mexican and jazz songbook\, created and recorded remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic\, that explores the question of how we can find communion in a time of isolation. The album grew out of the personal and collective experience of this moment of deep division—be it spiritual\, ideological\, political or geographical—and seeks to use music to create a shared sense of the experiences that we are all going through together\, alone. \n“Con Alma is a sonic painting representing a 15-year friendship through a collaborative process of writing\, telling the story of shared ambitions and triumphs\, love\, trials\, hope\, and losses\,” Herrera and Prestini wrote in a joint statement about the project. “The artists we worked with form our international musical family\, and it’s a joy to be able to connect through this album\, leaving an artifact of this time\, and our response to the pandemic: alone\, but together.” \nBorn in Mexico City and now based out of New York City\, Magos Herrera presented a concert\, blending classical jazz styling with Latin melodies\, at the NHCC in 2012 as part of the Center’s signature Latin Diva Series. \nAdditional information on this project is available at https://www.conalmaproject.com. SUMMARY:Tertulia Histórica Albuquerque: UnRaveling: Pancho Villa and Sam Ravel: An Encounter During the Infamous 1916 Raid on Columbus
DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MST) \nLive Via Zoom \nRegister in advance HERE \nFor more than a century scholars have debated why Pancho Villa attacked the border town of Columbus\, New Mexico on March 9\, 1916—a deadly incursion and the only time in the 20th century that a major foreign army invaded the continental United States. For Stacey Ravel Abarbanel\, the battle is the context for a family tale so spectacular that she always wondered if it was true: when Villa raided the village he was looking to kill her grandfather\, Sam Ravel. \nFree community event \n \nAbarbanel shares how Ravel\, a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania\, landed in Columbus and became entangled in this infamous encounter during the Mexican Revolution. Her essay about delving into this history was published in Tablet Magazine and she is now adapting the story for a documentary film titled UnRaveling. \nStacey Ravel Abarbanel works with museums and other arts/cultural organizations to amplify their messages and build audiences. From 2002–2014 she was director of external affairs for the Fowler Museum at UCLA\, after ten years in arts-related publishing at Getty Publications and Architectural Digest. In addition to her consulting practice\, her writings about art\, culture\, and history have appeared in Alta\, UCLA Magazine\, and other outlets. \nAlbuquerque is presented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center in collaboration with the Office of the New Mexico State Historian.

SUMMARY:2021 Winter ABQ Virtual Jewish Film Fest:  The House on Wannsee Street
DESCRIPTION:Screening—Thursday\, February 25\, 2021 at 7 pm (MST)\n* Available for 72 hours *\nZoom Conversation—Sunday\, February 28\, 2021 at 12 pm (MST) \nIndividual tickets are $8 and household tickets are $15; ticket prices include the film and the Zoom conversation. Purchase tickets HERE \nThe House on Wannsee Street is the story of generations of family secrets that are uncovered in this sweeping international story that begins with the Second World War and concludes with an emotional twenty-first-century revelation. When award-winning Argentinean filmmaker Poli Martínez Kaplun decided to dig deep into her family history\, she found a shocking discovery. Searching through family albums and 8mm home movies\, she unraveled a twentieth-century mystery. \n \nWhat she found were long-forgotten images of her great grandfather\, who she learned was a German-Jewish philosopher persecuted by the Nazis. To save his family from the concentration camps\, he was forced to flee Berlin and moved to Egypt\, then Switzerland\, and finally Argentina\, where they had to hide their Jewish identity in order to receive Church papers to enter the country (since after the Second World War Jews were not permitted entry as immigrants). Poignant questions of identity\, resilience\, compassion\, and the plight of displaced persons are brought to life as Poli confronts her mother and aunts about the hidden Jewish identity they have concealed ever since. Eighty years later\, Poli returns to Germany to their family house on Wannsee Street\, a few feet from where the Final Solution was decreed for all Jews in Europe. \nDirected by Poli Martínez Kaplun; 2019; Argentina; Documentary; 97 min; Spanish with English subtitles \nThe Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque’s 7th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest will light up your home screens from January 31 to February 28  with eight recently released film premieres.  Each year the festival endeavors to weave a colorful fabric of uniquely Jewish stories that come to us through movies from around the world.  That has not changed.  What has changed is that the coronavirus pandemic disallows in-person assemblies. So instead of the community gathering at theatrical venues\, we will be in the safety and comfort of our own homes watching the festival movies.  We will get together to engage in follow-up conversations\, virtually\, using the Zoom platform. \nEach film will have  a 72-hour screening period\, during which time you may watch the film at your convenience.  You will receive a link to watch the movie 24 hours in advance.  You must sign up for the Zoom conversation separately—it is free with the purchase of the film ticket\, but requires you to register. \nThe festival curators research current films showing at Jewish film festivals worldwide to select a representative line-up of the finest films for Albuquerque audiences to enjoy. \nThis year\, that was an arduous task because not only has the roster of Jewish films grown substantially\, but the quality of the films has increased as well.  Although the task was daunting\, it was truly a labor of love—screening and reviewing documentaries\, dramas\, comedies and all the territory in between\, with films from Argentina\, Canada\, Israel\, France\, Norway\, the United Kingdom\, and the U.S. \nThe eight selected films represent the best of each genre and showcase the Jewish journey around the world from past to contemporary times. \nFor more information on the 2021 Winter ABQ Virtual Jewish Film Festival\, please visit:\nhttps://www.abqjewishfilmfest.com \n#nhccnm  #newmexicoculture  #NMCulture  #20in2020 #ARTE #CINE

SUMMARY:Film: La Guerra Civil Española por nosotras/Female Views of the Spanish Civil War
DESCRIPTION:12 am (MST)\nAvailable through 11:59 pm (MST) March 7 \nPlace: All titles will be available on the Mujeres de Cine VOD platform HERE \nInstituto Cervantes Albuquerque\, in collaboration with Mujeres de Cine (Women of Cinema)\, presents the on-line film series La Guerra Civil española por nosotras (Female views of the Spanish Civil War)\, bringing together the views of three Spanish female directors on this conflict. The cycle comprises three full-length films: La buena nueva\, by Helena Taberna\, El gran vuelo\, by Carolina Astudillo Muñoz\, and El silencio de otros\, by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar. \nFree community event \n \nIn Helena Taberna’s La buena nueva\, a young parish priest in a socialist village must confront the ecclesiastical and military hierarchy\, putting his own life at stake\, when the nationalists occupy the town following the uprising of 1936 and begin to execute his parishioners. His only support comes from his friendship with the village teacher\, whose husband was killed at the beginning of the conflict.\n2008; Spanish with English subtitles; 108 minutes; not rated. \n********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** \n \nCarolina Astudillo’s film El gran vuelo is the story of Clara Pueyo Jornet\, a militant member of the Communist Party who escapes from Barcelona’s Les Corts prison in the early days of the Franco dictatorship. From that moment on\, she vanishes without a trace. She had been living on the run and seeking to escape from the rigidity of her own party as well; her story is also the story of the women of her time and their struggle for freedom in a society trying to repress them.\n2014; Spanish with English subtitles; 60 minutes; not rated. \n************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** \n \nFilmed over six years\, El silencio de otros\, by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar\, documents the epic struggle of victims of Franco’s 40-year dictatorship\, as they organize a groundbreaking international lawsuit and fight a “pact of forgetting” around the crimes committed against them. A cautionary tale about fascism and the dangers of forgetting the past\, the film speaks powerfully to issues of transitional justice and universal jurisdiction.\n2018; Spanish with English subtitles; 95 minutes; not rated. \n**********************************************************************************”*********************************************************************************************************************** \nLa Guerra Civil Española por nosotras is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Government of Spain with the collaboration of Spain Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Perspectivas Modernas: Trans-American Detritus: A Study in Trans-Femicide
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom. Register HERE \nThis presentation focuses on the photography series\, En la Pista (2016) by Mexican artist Teresa Margolles. I focus on Margolles’ use of portraiture to capture a snapshot of the lives of transwomen in Juarez\, Mexico\, and the transitions of the border. Margolles’ work visually disrupts narratives of femicide and slows the frantic pace of life on the border within the boundaries of the frame of the photographs. \nFree and open to the public \n \nFrancisco Galarte is an assistant professor of American Studies and Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies at UNM. He teaches courses in Chicanx/Latinx Studies\, Transgender Studies\, and Queer Studies. He currently serves as one of the general editors for TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly\, published by Duke University Press.
