Designed by Trama\, coordinator of women’s festivals in Spain\, the series celebrates the talented female directors working in this format with screenings of four very different short films—two dramatic works\, one documentary\, and one montage. \nElena Molina‘s documentary Quand j’étais petit is the story of N’Sele Malone\, as well as the story of childhood in many African countries\, where violence and helplessness are often unavoidable. Now one of the most renowned puppeteers in West Africa\, Malone uses the marionettes that he constructs in his Burkina Faso workshop to free and transform his early memories. The workshop will culminate in a public reading on February 20\, 2021. \nFree event with registration \n \nNew Mexico cultural envoy Juan Estevan Arellano\, to whom this work is dedicated\, writes that querencia “is that which gives us a sense of place\, that which anchors us to the land\, that which makes us a unique people\, for it implies a deeply rooted knowledge of place\, and for that reason we respect it as our home.” \nThis sentiment is echoed in the foreword by Rudolfo Anaya\, in which he writes that “querencia is love of home\, love of place.” This collection of both deeply personal reflections and carefully researched studies explores the New Mexico homeland through the experiences and perspectives of Chicanx and indigenous/Genízaro writers and scholars from across the state. DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom \nRegister in advance HERE \nThe war between the U.S.A. and Mexico in 1846 was a world event that shaped the destiny of both nations. New Mexico was impacted directly\, as it went from being part of the new nation of Mexico to being a U.S. territory\, and ultimately\, a U.S. state. In this presentation\, State Historian Rob Martinez will discuss the causes of the conflict and examine the fallout from those events\, as well as the impact on New Mexico history specifically. \nFree\, Registration Required \n \nState Historian Rob Martínez is a native New Mexican from Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on New Mexico history. Rob was a research assistant at the Vargas Project\, learning research skills and paleography\, abilities that would serve him well as a historian. Before becoming state historian in 2019\, he was deputy state historian for six years at the New Mexico State Records Center and Archives. \nAlbuquerque is presented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center in collaboration with the Office of the New Mexico State Historian.

DESCRIPTION:7 pm (MST)\nThis event can be viewed AMP Concerts website HERE \nCon Alma: Exploring the Creative Process with Paola Prestini & Magos Herrera \nScreening of videos from the Con Alma project\, including a world premiere video\, La Creación de las Aves (The Creation of the Birds)\, followed by a live on-line discussion and open Q&A session with Paola Prestini and Magos Herrera\, moderated by Cristina Baccin from KUNM’s Raices program. The discussion will be hosted by the National Hispanic Cultural Center via Zoom\, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes de Albuquerque and UNM’s Latin America and Iberian Institute. Prestini and Herrera will discuss the creative process\, the social engagement\, and the creation of the virtual event. \nDonations will be accepted on the AMP Concerts webpage \n \nCon Alma is an album and live digital experience of original works by composer Paola Prestini and vocalist and composer Magos Herrera\, along with some classics from the Mexican and jazz songbook\, created and recorded remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic\, that explores the question of how we can find communion in a time of isolation. The album grew out of the personal and collective experience of this moment of deep division—be it spiritual\, ideological\, political or geographical—and seeks to use music to create a shared sense of the experiences that we are all going through together\, alone. \n“Con Alma is a sonic painting representing a 15-year friendship through a collaborative process of writing\, telling the story of shared ambitions and triumphs\, love\, trials\, hope\, and losses\,” Herrera and Prestini wrote in a joint statement about the project. “The artists we worked with form our international musical family\, and it’s a joy to be able to connect through this album\, leaving an artifact of this time\, and our response to the pandemic: alone\, but together.” \nBorn in Mexico City and now based out of New York City\, Magos Herrera presented a concert\, blending classical jazz styling with Latin melodies\, at the NHCC in 2012 as part of the Center’s signature Latin Diva Series. \nAdditional information on this project is available at https://www.conalmaproject.com. SUMMARY:Perspectivas Modernas: Brazilian Rap and the Grammar of the Black Existence

Register HERE \nPaulo Dutra\, UNM Assistant Professor of Spanish and Portuguese\, examines the most famous Brazilian rap group Racionais Mc’s artistic production in order to explore their poetically crafted understanding of how people of African descent experience and negotiate their existence in Brazil. Paulo Dutra is the author of a short story collection Aversão oficial: resumida (2018) and of a poetry collection ablliterações (2019\, semifinalist in the 2020 Oceanos Prize). \nFree and open to the public \n \nHe specializes in the intersections of race and artistic and cultural production in Luso-Brazilian/Latin-American context. His scholarly work on Don Quijote\, race in Machado de Assis’s works\, and Racionais Mc’s’s rap music has appeared in journals and book chapters in Brazil\, Argentina and The United States.  \nThis presentation is part of a new program\, Perspectivas Modernas: Latin America\, a new series of talks about Latin America presented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center/History and Literary Arts Program\, UNM Department of History\, UNM Latin American and Iberian Institute\, and UNM Center for the Southwest.

This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award winning artist\, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. This workshop is for all levels of experience in an informal setting.  Annette will demonstrate as well as answer questions. We hope you will join us every month on the second Friday\, for this virtual stitch-a-long. DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MST) \nLive Via Zoom \nRegister in advance HERE \nFor more than a century scholars have debated why Pancho Villa attacked the border town of Columbus\, New Mexico on March 9\, 1916—a deadly incursion and the only time in the 20th century that a major foreign army invaded the continental United States. For Stacey Ravel Abarbanel\, the battle is the context for a family tale so spectacular that she always wondered if it was true: when Villa raided the village he was looking to kill her grandfather\, Sam Ravel. \nFree community event \n \nAbarbanel shares how Ravel\, a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania\, landed in Columbus and became entangled in this infamous encounter during the Mexican Revolution. Her essay about delving into this history was published in Tablet Magazine and she is now adapting the story for a documentary film titled UnRaveling. \nStacey Ravel Abarbanel works with museums and other arts/cultural organizations to amplify their messages and build audiences. From 2002–2014 she was director of external affairs for the Fowler Museum at UCLA\, after ten years in arts-related publishing at Getty Publications and Architectural Digest. In addition to her consulting practice\, her writings about art\, culture\, and history have appeared in Alta\, UCLA Magazine\, and other outlets. \nAlbuquerque is presented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center in collaboration with the Office of the New Mexico State Historian.

Purchase tickets HERE \nThe House on Wannsee Street is the story of generations of family secrets that are uncovered in this sweeping international story that begins with the Second World War and concludes with an emotional twenty-first-century revelation. When award-winning Argentinean filmmaker Poli Martínez Kaplun decided to dig deep into her family history\, she found a shocking discovery. Searching through family albums and 8mm home movies\, she unraveled a twentieth-century mystery. \n \nWhat she found were long-forgotten images of her great grandfather\, who she learned was a German-Jewish philosopher persecuted by the Nazis. SUMMARY:Perspectivas Modernas: Trans-American Detritus: A Study in Trans-Femicide  
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom. Register HERE \nThis presentation focuses on the photography series\, En la Pista (2016) by Mexican artist Teresa Margolles. I focus on Margolles’ use of portraiture to capture a snapshot of the lives of transwomen in Juarez\, Mexico\, and the transitions of the border. Margolles’ work visually disrupts narratives of femicide and slows the frantic pace of life on the border within the boundaries of the frame of the photographs. \nFree and open to the public \n \nFrancisco Galarte is an assistant professor of American Studies and Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies at UNM. He teaches courses in Chicanx/Latinx Studies\, Transgender Studies\, and Queer Studies. He currently serves as one of the general editors for TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly\, published by Duke University Press.

We really miss seeing you at the NHCC but hope you will join us on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm (MST) February – December. \nPlease register and prior to the class you will receive an email with the zoom link and items/art supplies to gather from around your house.  Please do not pass out the link\, we will let you in to the zoom room from your registration\, thank you! \nFree community event \n \nWe will have simple project demos and suggestions for at home art making. We will have breakout rooms to bring back our roundtable small group discussions. \nJoin us on March 4th with Artist Jocelyn Salas!  Jocelyn has two paintings in our permanent collection\, courtesy of the NM Arts in Public Places program. Jocelyn is known to work in oils\, cochineal\, gold leaf and a variety of other techniques. She has currently shifted from painting to working with textiles\, she will discuss her work and will show us a couple of approaches to the art of  appliqué. \nSupplies needed: Needle\, thread\, scissors\, paper\, pencil\, fabric. SUMMARY:Virtual Book Reading and Discussion: Manuel González\, Duende de Burque: Alburquerque Poems and Musings
DESCRIPTION:3 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom. Register HERE \nA virtual event partnership with the University of New Mexico Press and the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Manuel González will read and be in conversation with Valerie Martinez\, Director of History and Literary Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \nAt its center\, Manuel Gonzalez’s Duende de Burque is a love letter to Alburquerque and its surroundings—the Sandia Mountains\, the Rio Grande Bosque\, and all the people whose spirits fill these spaces.  Manuel González was the City of Albuquerque’s third poet laureate (2016-2018). González is a performance poet who began his career in the poetry slam. \nFree community event \n \nManuel González has represented Albuquerque many times on a national level as a member of the Albuquerque poetry slam team. Manuel has appeared on the PBS show\, Colores\, in “My Word is My Power.” He was one of the founding members of the poetry troupe\, “The Angry Brown Poets.” Manuel teaches workshops on self-expression and poetry in high schools and youth detention centers. He also works with an art therapist to help incarcerated young men express themselves through writing. \nPresented by Bookworks\, History and Literary Arts Program/NHCC\, and UNM Press.
