SUMMARY:Carnaval 2019: with PANdemonium and Odara Dance Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nThe NHCC’s annual celebration of Carnaval is a dazzling spectacle of vibrant dance\, engaging music\, and beautiful costumes\, featuring the band PANdemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble and showcasing the Carnaval celebrations of Cuba\, Trinidad\, Brazil and New Orleans. \nCarnaval\, the festive season occurring before Lent in many countries\, including Latin American and Caribbean nations as well as parts of the United States\, is one of the world’s most widespread celebrations and one of its biggest parties. Among the guidelines that the Performing Arts program has developed\, refined\, and utilized since 1999 to design its programming and curate its seasons is the provision of a variety of annual programming that is specific to seasons\, holidays\, and celebrations\, as well as culture-specific. Carnaval was first celebrated at the NHCC in 2002\, and has been part of the Center’s regular seasonal programming since 2006\, with regular performances by presenting partners Frank Leto & PANdemonium and Pilar Leto & the Odara Dance Ensemble. This year’s Carnaval 2019 marks the 14th annual Carnaval Celebration at the NHCC’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts.\n$17\, $22\, $27 w/ $2 off for students\, seniors and NHCC members. Group rates available \n \nFrank Leto\, musical director and leader of the band PANdemonium\, with which he has recorded three world music CDs\, is a multitalented instrumentalist who plays Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussion and Trinidadian steel drums. His love for rhythms has taken him to Brazil\, Puerto Rico\, and Cuba; while in Cuba\, he studied soneros\, tres\, and batá\, as reflected in his original compositions and performances. Pilar Leto\, founder and artistic director of the Odara Dance Ensemble\, is a dancer\, choreographer\, and producer who has performed and taught Brazilian\, Caribbean\, and Afro-Cuban dance for over 25 years. She also studied in Cuba\, with premier dancers of the Conjunto Folklórico Nacional and Raíces Profundas. Other members of PANdemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble also have extensive and impressive backgrounds in Latin percussion and dance. \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:La Canoa: David Garcia "Acequia Resolanas: Mutuality\, Social Praxis and the New Mexico Acequia Movement in the New Millennia"
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nDr. David Garcia is a Ph.D. Visiting Scholar in the University of New Mexico’s Center for Regional Studies as well as a Part-Time Instructor in the Department of Chicana/Chicano Studies. Dr. Garcia is with the Anthropology Department at the University of Texas at Austin. \nPlease join Dr. David Garcia as he presents a talk on the role Resolana plays within New Mexico acequia communities. In the last decade\, Resolana has functioned as a traditional gathering space\, a place of governance\, and as an emergent metaphor for social organizing. This talk details how the Resolana is being used by the New Mexico Acequia Association as a central theory which functions as a mode of engagement from acequia canals to the halls of state legislature. Building on the work of La Academia de la Nueva Raza\, a 1970s organization based in Embudo\, New Mexico\, this mode of engagement has continued on as a form of movement-building. The creation of La Escuelita de Las Acequias\, within the New Mexico Acequia Association\, demonstrates this. In addition\, Dr. Garcia will discuss the significance of language performance and space within the resolana and the significant role the resolana plays as a customary infrastructure for the local ethnopoetics of acequia governance in New Mexico. \nThis event is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Opera Southwest Presents Astor Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires
DESCRIPTION:February 17\, 20\, 22 & 24\, 2019\n 2 pm — Sundays\n 7:30 pm—Wednesday & Friday \nOpera Southwest presents Astor Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires\, a fully-staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Spanish with both English and Spanish translation supertitles\, and presented in two acts with one intermission. \nOSW is thrilled to present Piazzolla’s only opera in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The story goes that his surrealist depiction of the titular Maria’s sleepwalk through violence\, death\, the afterlife\, and rebirth was composed entirely on the bandoneón. The opera effortlessly weaves classical contrapuntal techniques together with milongas\, cabarets\, and mid-century jazz for a thrilling dance through the underbelly of Buenos Aires. Anthony Barrese conducts.\n$15\, $29\, $45\, $59\, $75\, $89; discounts for groups of ten or more\, patrons 30 and younger\, and those who attend all three “Inside Opera” workshops between Jan. 23 and Feb. 5\, 2019. \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Noche Flamenca Gala Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nJoin Mayor Keller of Albuquerque\, NCCP\, and ArtPlace America for this extraordinary event! Enjoy a tapas dinner from La Fonda del Bosque\, paired with wine from the award-winning Casa Rondeńa Winery\, in an intimate setting at the beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center. Experience flamenco at its most passionate\, as internationally-renown cantaor Vicente Griego and his group REVÓZO\, with dancers featuring Marisol Encinias of the National Institute of Flamenco\, as they reach for duende in a stripped-downtablao performance. \n \nSpecial thanks to the City of Albuquerque\, National Hispanic Cultural Center\, Vicente Griego\, Casa Rondeńa Winery\, and Chuy Martinez for donating time and space to make this special event possible. \nProceeds for this event will go towards supporting CPL Summit Scholarships. \nThe Creative Placemaking Leadership Summits are important for the development of ideas\, relationships\, and projects in the field\, and all around the country. They allow people from all disciplines and geographies to meet with peers\, get ideas and make connections that will benefit the entire field for years to come. But we can’t\, in good conscience\, invite only those who can afford it. We risk continuing the echo chambers we so often see in our news and social media. When creating a diverse and dynamic conversation around building communities through arts and cultural programming\, it’s critical to have better\, and deliberate representation. People from rural areas\, poor and working class people\, LGBTQ folks and people of color are currently underrepresented at our summits and we want everyone’s voice at the table. Help us get them there. Everyone needs more artists in their lives. They provide not only hands-on knowledge of tools and techniques\, but a creative outlook on processes and collaboration. Grassroots advocates and leaders of tomorrow voice the challenges and opportunities of communities. People of color\, native\, and immigrant communities support the diversity of stories that are the very foundation for the field of creative placemaking. \nMore information at cpcommunities.org/support.
