You are invited to join them on the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor and enjoy a wonderful performance! \nA Midsummer Night’s Dream |  Directed by Julia Thudium \nFree community event. Tickets will be available at the event one hour prior to the performance. \n \nDirector’s Note: ​If Samhain or Halloween is the night\, where the veils between the living and the dead are thin\, in many cultures\, Midsummer is the night that the Faeries come out and play\, the night when you dance around the bonfire in the forest\, only to realize you are not dancing alone and when you open your eyes the next morning\, you’re not sure if what you experienced was real or simply a vision. \nThis performance is set in the magical moment between waking and sleeping – the slow surfacing from the depths of your dreamscape – the liminal space on the threshold of beginning. In order to have a beginning you need to have a before-time. It’s here where we find our Midsummer. The Italians have a word for this before-time: Dormiveglia\, the space that stretches between sleeping and waking. Not many people know this\, but it is in this place that the Faeries rule. Everything is possible in the moments you dwell here; the sweet\, the sad\, the irreverent and the ridiculous. If you know me\, you know I prefer the ridiculous over just about anything. \nLast year when I took on As You Like It\, I coined it the “Party Show” of the Festival. This year is something a little different. This year we are THE HEART show. I invite you to let yourself sink here in this moment in the no-time. Let yourself be enchanted and pause in the mystic doorway with us. \n\nThe event is a rental event not an NHCC production. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nWith a captivating work drawing on a black and white photographic image\, director Adrian Garcia Gomez delves into memory to orient his imagination regarding identity and the past in the environment of the western and Mexican cinema of the 1940’s and 50’s. This short film follows its predecessor Mikveh (2016)\, and shares that film’s sensitive attunement regarding its formality and concerns\, which the Californian creator will continue in his subsequent work\, using a much more complex visual composition. \nFree Community Event \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible. This year\, the program dedicated to highlighting the celebration of LGTBIQ+ Pride Day comes from the Basque festival Zinegoak\, which celebrates its twenty years of existence with the presentation of an animated film series whose films address this theme on our Vimeo channel. Each gathering in this series will focus on a different cultural aspect of the question: “Who or what is Latinidad?” Voces de Latinidad aims to feature unique voices from our community culminating in a short documentary and digital archive celebrating the rich diversity of our lived experiences. \nOn July 11\, we invite all people of Hispanic\, Latina/o/e/x\, Chicana/o/e/x\, Indigenous\, and New Mexican heritage from the communities of Barelas\, Atrisco\, the greater South Valley\, and surrounding neighborhoods to come and share how you identify culturally and how this shapes your reality and lived experiences. \nFree Community Event. Please register using the link below. \n \nSpeaker: Mónica Sánchez holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing from the University of New Mexico. She has followed her bliss throughout a life in the theatre and the theatre of life. Over 30 years she has honed her craft as a professional actor\, written and devised work collaboratively and independently for the stage\, directed a handful of productions small and large\, and enjoyed a myriad of assignments as a teaching artist and community engagement facilitator with diverse and intergenerational communities. \n*Note: Community Sessions will be filmed and some individuals may be selected for interviews.  \nThe Voces de Latinidad project has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Democracy Demands Wisdom.

Their work traverses themes of culture\, tradition\, identity\, and place\, connecting those with Mexican roots across borders. Organized by artist Marco Sánchez and multidisciplinary scholar Claudia Ley in collaboration with the NHCC Art Museum\, the exhibition features 32 artworks exchanged for a print portfolio between the participating artists as well as additional pieces contextualizing the artists’ work. \nNexo Entre Raíces es una exposición de grabados de artistas viviendo y trabajando en ambos lugares de México y Estados Unidos. Sus obras atraviesan temas de cultura\, tradición\, identidad y lugar\, que se conectan con sus raíces transfronterizas. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nAs part of her thesis project\, filmmaker Andrea Gudiño proposed this animated documentary that brings us closer to the issue of sexual binarism. The possibility of using the experiences and personal testimonies of real people who do not appear in the image but are generated from an original use of materials and cinematographic techniques\, achieves an enormous visual and didactic impact\, one of the most effective resources in an animated documentary like this one. DESCRIPTION:11:00 am (MST) \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is offering a guided tour of the Mundos de Mestizaje fresco created by artist Frederico Vigil. Tours of the fresco are offered Thursdays and Fridays at 11am. Located in the Torreón on the NHCC Campus\, Mundos de Mestizaje depicts thousands of years of Hispanic culture\, history\, and identity. \nAdmission for the tour is $2 and tickets are available for advance purchase below. Tickets can also be purchased in the New Mexico Mutual Welcome Center\, depending on availability. Capacity for each tour is limited. \nA Vision of History through Fresco… \nMundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4\,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. \nThe digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a sharing and learning experience for students and families anywhere. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nEmilio Martí’s creative trajectory demonstrates his commitment to social issues that highlight our problems with coexistence and solidarity in today’s society. Since his short film Desanimado (2011)\, winner of countless awards\, his work has not stopped betting on a lively and effective story-telling and emotional resonance\, always using animation as an expressive key. With this short film\, which also won several awards\, he brings us closer to the harsh reality of the Internment Centers for Foreigners (CIE) and the personal experiences of immigrants. \nFree Community Event. \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible. This year\, the program dedicated to highlighting the celebration of LGTBIQ+ Pride Day comes from the Basque festival Zinegoak\, which celebrates its twenty years of existence with the presentation of an animated film series whose films address this theme on our Vimeo channel. DESCRIPTION:10:00 am \nArte Poquito is a free\, monthly\, 45-minute program for babies and toddlers ages 0 months to 4 years and their caregivers that cultivates creativity and self-expression through the exploration of Hispanic/Latine arts and culture. Participants explore the NHCC Museum\, Performing Arts Center\, and engage in artmaking\, music\, movement\, dance\, drama\, and bilingual story time. NHCC instructors model age-appropriate arts techniques that celebrate self-expression\, build vocabulary\, and strengthen both fine-motor and gross-motor skills in a fun environment. \nFree Community Event.
