SUMMARY:AfroMundo Festival: Beyond the Pale Literary Event
DESCRIPTION:3:00 pm \nA literary reading and discourse with Puerto Rican and Dominican authors Mayra Santos Febres\, Eleuterio Santiago Díaz and Loida Maritza Pérez. “Beyond the pale” is a British colonial phrase for those who\, for living beyond borders and boundaries\, actual or imagined\, were considered beyond the rule of law and of accepted social norms. The phrase further suggests “otherness” and has since taken on racial connotations\, as in not white; dull\, savage\, incompetent\, dark\, backwards; heathen; diabolic\, transgressor\, hence illegal. Authors will read works and discuss the stigmas associated with those in the Caribbean who practice Afro traditions. \nFree community event \nAfroMundo Festival\nShared Roots: A Celebration of Afro-Latinx Culture \nAfroMundo was born of a desire to counter alienation and marginalization by fostering civic engagement. DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nAfro Caribbean Cosmology is rooted in understanding how the ashé\, the underlying power in all living things\, manifests and connects to human beings.  For souls to live in balance\, it is essential to learn how to read nature’s inherent powers.  It is by identifying with nature that one develops conscience\, as well as the iwa pele\, the “good character” that guarantees joy\, a full life\, and an ability to “see” and to understand the connection between all living things. \nFree community event\n \n“Divinations” are photosculpture installations through which José Arturo Ballester Panelli\, aka Balleste 9\, directs our gaze to Nature’s mystical connections.  Such connections are fundamental to Caribbean and Afro Latin American identities and cosmologies. \nAfroMundo Festival \nShared Roots: A Celebration of Afro-Latinx Culture \n AfroMundo was born of a desire to counter alienation and marginalization by fostering civic engagement. Panelists Carolina “Caro” Acuña-Olvera\, Rosalinda Rojas\, and Yvonne B. Hamilton Gutierrez are members of the Black Flamenco Network\, also known as FUAAD—Flamencos Unidos Africanos y Afro Descendientes. \nFree community event \nAfroMundo Festival \nShared Roots: A Celebration of Afro-Latinx Culture \nAfroMundo was born of a desire to counter alienation and marginalization by fostering civic engagement. Classical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in this reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance\, music\, and spoken word. Mirabal collaborates with Festival Ballet Albuquerque’s artistic director Patricia Dickinson Wells and with internationally renowned New York City Ballet dancer Jock Soto\, of Navajo and Puerto Rican descent. Soto\, who is originally from Gallup\, NM\, and will also make guest appearances onstage\, now lives in Eagle Nest\, NM. \n$14\, $20\, $29\, $39\, $49 w/ $2 discount for seniors\, children under 12 and NHCC members \n \nAdditional choreographers for the production are native New Mexican Dominic Guerra and internationally known Vladimir Conde-Reche\, a native of São Paulo\, Brazil. His 2002 breakthrough PBS special\, Music from a Painted Cave\, is unsurpassed in Native American theatrical expression. \nA former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet\, Jock Soto was one of the last dancers to be personally selected by founder George Balanchine when he was barely 16. He danced featured roles in over 40 ballets\, of which more than 35 were created for him. DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nAMP Concerts presents “From Bamako to Birmingham”—a culturally satisfying fusion with Afro-pop duo Amadou & Mariam and soulful gospel group Blind Boys of Alabama coming together to combine contemporary African contemporary African sounds and African-American roots music. \n$36\, $46 & $56 \nApproximate time of event: 2 hours including intermission \n \nThe Blind Boys of Alabama are recognized worldwide as living legends of gospel music. Celebrated by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) with Lifetime Achievement Awards\, inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame\, and winners of five Grammy Awards\, they have reached the highest levels of achievement in a career that spans over 70 years. The Blind Boys are known for crossing multiple musical boundaries with their remarkable interpretations of everything from traditional gospel favorites to contemporary spiritual material by songwriters such as Eric Clapton\, Prince\, and Tom Waits. They have appeared on recordings with many other artists\, including Lou Reed\, Peter Gabriel\, Bonnie Raitt\, Willie Nelson\, Aaron Neville\, Susan Tedeschi\, Ben Harper\, Patty Griffin\, and Taj Mahal. \nFor the past forty-odd years\, Amadou & Mariam have managed to joyfully combine their love story with a musical career while becoming\, discreetly but surely\, the most famous ambassadors for Malian and African music around the world. They carry this status with brio\, and challenge it playfully with each new album. They have collaborated with many diverse artists and worked with producers who might seem far removed from their universe\, such as Damon Albarn of Blur and Manu Chao. They have invited the most accomplished artists who are building tomorrow’s pop music to play on their lively songs (Santigold\, TV on the Radio\, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs)\, and their tracks have been remixed by Yuksek\, Vitalic\, Henrik Schwarz\, Miike Snow\, and Ashley Beedle\, underlining their intrinsically danceable quality. Amadou & Mariam have also played the world’s biggest festivals\, from Coachella to Glastonbury\, and opened for huge bands such as Coldplay and the Scissor Sisters. Hay first came to prominence as the lead vocalist of Men at Work\, which was formed in 1979 and went on to become a multi-platinum-selling musical act\, winning a Grammy for best new artist in 1982. The original band was short-lived\, however\, and after 1985 Hay became primarily a solo artist. He has written and released some 13 solo albums\, the latest being I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself\, an album of cover material. With a new album of original material due for release in early 2022\, Hay is also a touring member of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band\, scheduled to resume touring in 2022. \n$41\, $51\, $61 \n \n\nThe title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. She and poet Dan Vera are also the co-editors of Imaniman: Poets Writing in the Anzaldúan Borderlands\, a collection of poetry and essays. ire’ne is the recipient of a 2021 Tasajillo Writers Grant\, a 2017 NALAC Fund for the Arts Grant\, the final Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Award\, and was the Fiction Finalist for AROHO’s 2013 Gift of Freedom Award.
