SUMMARY:The Mountains Wore Down to the Valleys Sound Installation and Exhibit Closing
DESCRIPTION:10:00am – 4:00pm \nThe Mountains Wore Down to the Valleys closes on April 23. In the final days of the exhibition\, experience 21 musical compositions on vinyl records playing once more in the gallery as they erode and change over time. Visit during NHCC Museum hours\, 10am – 4pm\, April 21 – 23. \nThe Mountains Wore Down to the Valleys is a collaborative sound and visual installation by New Mexican artists Adri De La Cruz and Marisa Demarco. The multi-phase exhibition begins and ends with a sound experience that transforms over the course of 72 hours as 21 musical compositions on vinyl records erode over time.  Stories of strength emanate from another record that plays multigenerational interviews with one artist’s family members. This record\, a document of lineage\, endures. Etched portraits of the interviewees are presented on the reverse side of eight records on visual display. \nThe exhibit is an exploration of love\, family\, community\, and the perseverance of generations. Each component symbolizes an experience—the grooves on a record much like mountains and valleys\, the materials\, strong and enduring\, yet fragile and malleable.

Classical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in this reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance\, music\, and spoken word. Mirabal collaborates with Festival Ballet Albuquerque’s artistic director Patricia Dickinson Wells and with internationally renowned New York City Ballet dancer Jock Soto\, of Navajo and Puerto Rican descent. Soto\, who will also make guest appearances onstage\, is originally from Gallup and now lives in Eagle Nest. \n$14\, $20\, $29\, $39\, $49 w/ a $2 discount for seniors\, children under 12 and NHCC members \nRun time: 90 mins \n \nAdditional choreographers for the production are native New Mexican Dominic Guerra\, and internationally known Vladimir Conde-Reche\, a native of São Paulo\, Brazil. Additional guest artists include the Trujillo Family traditional Native American dancers and Alex Ossadnik originally from East Germany. \nRobert Mirabal\, dedicated to keeping alive the centuries-old customs of Taos Pueblo\, is also a leading proponent of world music\, and has merged his Indigenous American sound with the music of Africa\, Asia\, and the Caribbean\, tapping into a planetary pulse with a style that defies characterization. His 2002 breakthrough PBS special\, Music from a Painted Cave\, is unsurpassed in Native American theatrical expression. \nA former principal dancer with the New York Ballet\, Jock Soto was one of the last dancers to be personally selected by founder George Balanchine when he was barely 16. He danced featured roles in over 40 ballets\, of which more than 35 were created for him. The author of Every Step You Take and the subject of the documentary Water Flowing Together (the name of his Navajo clan)\, Soto teaches partnering and technique classes at the School of American Ballet\, where he has been a permanent member of the faculty since 1996. \nSacred Journeys IV brings together the rich and diverse culture of our state\, while providing extraordinary role models for New Mexico’s youth. \nSACRED JOURNEYS IV: The Live Performance Recording was honored to be screened in 2021 at the Red Nation International Film festival and the American Indian Film Festival.

Their work traverses themes of culture\, tradition\, identity\, and place\, connecting those with Mexican roots across borders. Organized by artist Marco Sánchez and multidisciplinary scholar Claudia Ley in collaboration with the NHCC Art Museum\, the exhibition features 32 artworks exchanged for a print portfolio between the participating artists as well as additional pieces contextualizing the artists’ work. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday\, April 21. Their project Pueblos en Arte was born from this bet\, which managed to attract other people with a similar vital profile in an attempt to achieve a better way of life and to generate other creative synergies in a rural environment. \nIn this documentary film\, the director tells us how he decides to leave\, together with his wife and his newborn daughter\, the busy life of the capital to start from scratch in a village in an empty Spain. With his work\, he shows us the infinite possibilities offered by the rural world\, despite the critical situation of the village to which he migrates\, and proposes a new way of life for future generations. \nFree community event \n \nRural life has undergone countless changes in the last two centuries\, as has also occurred in the urban sphere. Migratory movements have been depopulating huge agricultural areas\, where the youngest inhabitants have moved to cities to forge their future\, often outside their own countries. In recent times\, however\, there has been a new vocation to recover the elements of wellbeing that the rural environment offers to the people and communities that make it up. Existence outside busy urban life has become an alternative model of sustainability and coexistence that proposes another way of repopulating rural spaces\, but beyond the idyllic readings of this return\, a sector of the population is trying to define and found this new rural life. \nIn order to illustrate these new movements\, the Cervantes Institute presents an online film program with four documentaries that bring us closer to stories of life in the countryside in four very different parts of the Spanish geography. The economy derived from it comes along with rites that allude to the importance of the community in its communication with nature and in the celebration of life. The formal bet of the director Ana Domínguez highlights all the visual elements that compose an imaginary that flees from the rational to evoke another type of knowledge: the one offered by nature. \nSynopsis: The director Ana Domínguez brings us closer to her origins through this film in which she shows the grape harvest process in a small Galician village. The wine culture becomes an ancestral journey that moves between the autobiographical and the mythical\, from the natural cycles to the most visceral traditions\, the village festivals\, which\, as a reflection of the ancient bacchanals\, become an explosion of life. \nFree community event \n \nRural life has undergone countless changes in the last two centuries\, as has also occurred in the urban sphere. Migratory movements have been depopulating huge agricultural areas\, where the youngest inhabitants have moved to cities to forge their future\, often outside their own countries. In recent times\, however\, there has been a new vocation to recover the elements of wellbeing that the rural environment offers to the people and communities that make it up. Existence outside busy urban life has become an alternative model of sustainability and coexistence that proposes another way of repopulating rural spaces\, but beyond the idyllic readings of this return\, a sector of the population is trying to define and found this new rural life. \nIn order to illustrate these new movements\, the Cervantes Institute presents an online film program with four documentaries that bring us closer to stories of life in the countryside in four very different parts of the Spanish geography. Based on the true-life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca\, the film focuses on Chicano step-brothers Paco and Cruz\, and their biracial cousin Miklo. Bound by Honor follows their intertwining lives from 1972 to 1984\, when they start out as members of a street gang in East Los Angeles. As dramatic incidents occur\, their lives and friendships are forever changed.
