SUMMARY:¡HAH! Happy Arte Hour
DESCRIPTION:This event is full and registration is now closed. Please check back for the next Happy Arte Hour\, February 1\, 2018. \n5:30 pm \nOn the first Thursday of the month\, NHCC invites adults for artistic fun in a relaxed social setting\, which includes snacks\, refreshments\, and beer & wine for sale from Pop Fizz. This is a great opportunity for friends to hang out\, a unique date night option\, or a place to come solo and connect with fellow art enthusiasts. \nThis month’s art project will be lead by Martha Vároz Ewing who uses wheat\, oats & barley straw in her work\, which she gathers from her brother’s wheat fields in Southern Colorado.  The straw is known as Poor Man’s Gold and the tin is “Poor Man’s Silver.  She combines the two mediums as she feels they complement each other.  Martha notes that her art takes on a form of prayer which is offered to the Trinity and is symbolic in her designs as noted in patterns of three.  She was mentored by the late Paula Rodriguez who was responsible\, along with her husband Eliseo\,  for the revival of this dying art form in the 1930’s during the WPA project. \nMartha is a native of Santa Fé and has been a participant in the traditional Spanish Market since 2004. She is an award winning artist and was awarded the top five awards at the traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe in 2005. \nPlease pre-register using the link HERE (so we know how many materials to prepare) \nFor more information please call or email Elena Baca at 505-246-2261 or ElenaD.Baca@state.nm.us\nFree\, $5 donations are encouraged to support the artists & purchase supplies

SUMMARY:Shoes for the Santo Niño
DESCRIPTION:Friday at 7 pm\nSaturday at 2 pm \nShoes for the Santo Niño is the story of Julianita\, the youngest of eleven children\, who slips out of her home one evening to take a pair of “practical” shoes that she has made to the Santo Niño de Atocha. When she enters the church\, the Santo Niño and the saints come to life\, and Julianita is whisked off into an evening of mystery\, magic\, and miracles. \nThis joyous piece by the Santa Fe Opera depicts the important role of the Santo Niño de Atocha as part of the traditional cultural fabric of northern New Mexico in both Hispanic and Native American families. The tale of Julianita and the Santo Niño\, passed down from generation to generation\, is adapted from the charming children’s story by Peggy Pond Church. The Santo Niño is known as an advocate for healing\, primarily of children\, and many believe that he wears the shoes left by pilgrims who visit his shrines to walk abroad and heal sick children while they sleep. \nPhoto by Brandon Soder.\n$7 for everyone

SUMMARY:Film: All of Me/Llévate mis amores
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nBased in the Mexican village of La Patrona\, this documentary offers an intimate insight into a group of women\, appropriately known as the Patronas\, who since 1995 have prepared food\, bagged it\, and tossed it to migrants traveling on top of the freight train known as “La Bestia” (The Beast) as it makes its way to the U.S. Their remarkable example of love and solidarity\, despite the risk both to themselves and to those riding the rails\, contrasts with the violence of one of the cruelest stretches in the world for undocumented travelers. SUMMARY:La Canoa: Legacy Talks: The Myth of Tri-Cultural Harmony: Ethnic/Sexual Personas in the Tri-Cultural Land of Enchantment
DESCRIPTION:3:30 pm \nJoin us for an examination of New Mexico’s public ideology of tri-culturalism\, which holds that the state consists of three separate ethnic groups living together in harmony. \nChris Wilson\, Professor of Cultural Landscape Studies at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning will discuss the myth\, developed in the 1880s as part of the campaign to make New Mexico a state\, and crystalized in the early 20th century with the rise of mass tourism. The primary visual expression of this rhetoric—found in both public art and tourism promotional literature—is a set of ethnic personas. Occupying the middle ground between racial stereotypes and mythic archetypes\, these popular cultural types—like the iconography of the saints before them—are recognizable through attributes of costume\, arts and crafts\, skin color and facial type\, tools and modes of transportation. When linked to assumptions about technological progress\, occupational status and\, above all\, gender roles\, these images also encapsulate and endorse a particular vision of social hierarchy.\nThis is a free public event

SUMMARY:Reading & Booksigning: Pablo Brescia\, The Defeat of the Real\, and Santiago Vaquera-Vásquez\, En el Lost y Found
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin Pablo Brescia as he reads from his book La derrota de lo real/The Defeat of the Real (Miami and Mexico\, 2017) and Santiago Vaquera-Vásquez as he reads from his book En el Lost y Found (2016). \nPablo Brescia makes us see that what is created by literature can be\, at the same time\, fictional and present within us. Some stories deconstruct reality\, others assemble worlds playing with detective fiction or science fiction; some are ironic\, others satiric; some refer back to Wilcock and Bolaño\, others to Borges. In these stories\, Brescia’s narrative pulse proves to be necessary by helping us capture reality’s insane ways. \nSantiago Vaquera-Vásquez is an unrepentant border crosser\, ex-dj\, Xicano writer\, painter\, and academic. An Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Hispanic Southwest Literatures and Cultures in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico\, he is recently back in New Mexico after a year as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer in Ankara\, Turkey. He has also taught and lectured at universities across the United States\, Latin America\, and Europe. A member of the research group UC-Mexicanistas. \n \nPablo Brescia was born in Buenos Aires and has lived in the United States since 1986. He has published three books of short stories: La derrota de lo real/The Defeat of the Real (Miami and Mexico\, 2017)\, Fuera de Lugar/Out of Place (Peru\, 2012/Mexico\, 2013) and La apariencia de las cosas/The Appearance of Things (México\, 1997)\, and a book of hybrid texts No hay tiempo para la poesía/NoTime for Poetry (Buenos Aires\, 2011)\, with the pen name Harry Bimer. Some of his stories are collected in ESC (Miami\, 2013) and Gente ordinaria/Ordinary People (Mexico\, 2014). His blog is Preferiría (no) hacerlo/I Would Prefer (Not) To (http://pablobrescia.blogspot.com). He teaches Latin American Literature at the University of South Florida. \nSantiago Vaquera-Vásquez is the author of four collections of short stories\, Algún día te cuento las cosas que he visto (2012)\, Luego el silencio (2014)\, One Day I’ll Tell You the Things I’ve Seen (2015)\, and En el Lost y Found (2016). His most recent work is a co-edited anthology of scholarly writing\, The Latino/a Midwest Reader. Widely published in Spanish\, his literary work has appeared in anthologies and literary journals in Spain\, Italy\, Latin America and the United States. He has discussed his work with Eduardo Halfón and Daniel Alarcón in The Believer\, and with Edmundo Paz Soldán and Santiago Roncagliolo in The Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies. His stories bear witness to the lives of Latinas/os who travel from California to Mexico City\, from Madrid to Istanbul. The stories are populated by wanderers building a home out of movement and living through the cultural consequences of migration. Commenting on his writing\, Junot Díaz has said “Santiago Vaquera is literary lightning. He impresses\, he illuminates\, and when he is at his best you are left shaken\, in awe. \nFree public event

SUMMARY:Siembra\, Latino Theatre Season: Ay\, Compadre!
DESCRIPTION:November 2-5\, 9-12 & 16-19\, 2017\n 7:30 pm—Thursday-Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday \nA 1994 play by Rudolfo Anaya\, Ay\, Compadre! is a classic work about aging and how a couple of “compas” are dealing with it. SUMMARY:Film: Calling Home the Dead/Llamar a los muertos a casa
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nThe villagers of Lake Pátzcuaro lovingly clean and adorn graves with beautiful handmade ofrendas\, blankets of marigolds\, and special foods\, preparing for the shared remembrance of Día de los Muertos. Presented as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \n“On the Day of the Dead\, when the spirits come back to us\, the road from heaven must be\nmade easy\, they say\, and not slippery with tears.” \n2011; Jim Hill & Meesh Rheault Miller; Spanish with English subtitles; 47 minutes; not rated. \nFor further information\, please visit www.callinghomethedead.com. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show
