SUMMARY:Robert Arellano\, With a Special Introduction by Levi Romero
DESCRIPTION:Secrets\, Spies\, and Spanish Rice: Six Decades of the Cuban-American Experience \nAward-winning author Robert Arellano\, With a Special Introduction by Levi Romero \n6:00 pm to 8:00 pm \nOctober marks the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis. For millions of Cubans exiled by the Revolution\, it was the point of no return — time to settle in for a long embargado as immigrant Americanos. Join us for a multimedia presentation on la vida cubana-americana\, a dance with one foot on the island and the other in the United States: three generations trying to keep in step with their cubanidad. Arellano will span six decades in 60 minutes while bringing this rich culture and complex history to life through stories\, photographs\, and a healthy dose of Latin jazz\, offering you more than a few secretos sabrosos of the Cuban-American experience. \nThis is a free\, ticketed event. Please register HERE. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Arellano is an award-winning Cuban-American novelist and scholar. His Cuban Noir series\, beginning with Havana Lunar and Havana Libre\, has received starred reviews from Booklist and CrimeReads and been shortlisted for the Edgar Allan Poe Prize. Arellano has also written short fiction for collections like the recent Let’s Hear Their Voices: Cuban American Writers of the Second Generation (State University of New York Press)\, poems for the forthcoming first edition of the New Mexico Poetry Anthology (Museum of New Mexico Press)\, and five more novels including Curse the Names: a New Mexico Noir. He has been awarded fellowships by the Rockefeller Foundation and Ford Family Foundation and served on the faculties at Brown University\, the Institute of American Indian Arts\, UNM-Taos and Southern Oregon University. He is currently at work on the third novel in the Cuban Noir series as well as a nonfiction book about the hardcore-punk and metalhead youth of post-revolutionary Cuba titled Friki.

SUMMARY:Film: Better Days
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nFran Herrero Ansoleaga’s Better Days presents the testimonies of five people who have fled harassment in their home countries because of their gender identities and have sought asylum in Spain. Before the director’s camera\, they share their fears\, doubts\, and certainties\, as well as their belief that “everything gets better.” \n2021; Spanish with English subtitles; 9 minutes; not rated. \nFree community event \n \nInstituto Cervantes presents an annual cycle of short films dedicated to gender diversity\, dealing with different approaches to LGTBIQ+ reality\, and presented around the celebration of Pride Day. This July\, Pedro Zerolo of Madrid’s Cinemateca\, whose political activism helped enact Spain’s same-sex marriage law\, has selected seven works that reflect the life stories of people of all ages\, and especially those who have had to flee their countries because of their sexual orientation. \nMost of the films presented in this cycle\, Encuentros diversos: Cortometrajes LGTBIQ+/Diverse Encounters: LGTBIQ+ Short Films\, are documentaries; two feature films are directed by recently deceased filmmaker Roberto Pérez Toledo. His prolific career was committed to the theme of the cycle\, which serves as a tribute to him. Additionally\, the program has the support of Exterior es Diverso\, the platform created by LGTBI personnel of the Spanish Foreign Service\, as well as their partners and families.

SUMMARY:Film: Violeta Went to Heaven (Chile)
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm to 6:15 pm – Chilean folkloric music performed live\n6:15 pm to 6:45 pm – “Violeta Parra in context” historical presentation by Dr. Carson Morris\n7:00 pm – Film Screening \nAndrés Wood’s Violeta Went to Heaven tells the story of famed Chilean singer and folklorist Violeta Parra\, tracing her evolution from impoverished child to international sensation and Chile’s national hero\, and interweaving key set pieces from Parra’s life to capture the swirling intensity of her inner contradictions\, fallibilities\, and passions. Loosely based on Ángel Parra’s memoirs of his mother\, the film offers a multi-faceted and lyrical portrayal of an influential figure in world music and complex cultural icon of Chile’s history. Violeta Parra’s revival of Chilean traditional music galvanized a socially and politically committed pan-Latin American folk music movement—“nueva canción“—and became a reference for other Latin American artists committed to their national legacies. \n2011; Spanish with English subtitles; 110 minutes; not rated. \nFree community event \nThe Bank of America provides generous support for this film series
