SUMMARY:Film: Acequias: The Legacy Lives On
DESCRIPTION:5:00 – 7:00 pm: Food Trucks\, Live Music & Cash Bar\n7:00 – 8:15 pm: Acequias Screening\n8:15 pm: Director Q&A following film screening \nThe University of New Mexico’s Center for Regional Studies and the NHCC present Acequias: The Legacy Lives On. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Aracely “Arcie” Chapa\, Acequias: The Legacy Lives On is an hour-long\, visually stunning documentary film about New Mexico’s enduring acequias as seen through the eyes of farmers\, advocates\, scholars\, practitioners\, lawmakers\, journalists\, and members of the community. Chapa produces and directs an emotional and reverential tribute to acequias’ past\, present\, and future. \nFree Community Event. Please register here or or call the NHCC Welcome Center at 505-724-4771 for assistance. \n \nWith funding from UNM’s Center for Regional Studies\, the film unfolds through a series of storylines including the acequias’ current challenges\, such as climate change and water rights transfers\, their important role in the development of local food sheds\, and the economic opportunity they provide for members of rural communities. Further\, in an arid state where every drop of water is studied and tracked\, it has been shown that acequias provide recharge to our groundwater systems as water seeps into the earth beneath the flow. For over 400 years\, Acequias have been in continuous use and remain important to an understanding of New Mexico’s acequia heritage and the continuing relevance of these water democracies. \nThe trailer for the movie is available here. \nRun time: 1 hour and 10 minutes.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Boy and the World
DESCRIPTION:3:00 pm \nBrazilian artist Alê Abreu’s Academy Award-nominated masterpiece is a riotous explosion of music and color\, a breathtakingly original and vibrant cinematic experience that depicts the wonders and struggles of the modern world as seen through the eyes of a young boy. \nCuca’s cozy rural life is shattered when his father leaves for the city\, prompting him to embark on a quest to reunite his family. The young boy’s journey unfolds like a tapestry\, the animation taking on greater complexity as his small world expands. Entering civilization\, industrial landscapes are inhabited by animal-machines\, with barrios of decoupage streets and shop windows and flashing neon advertisements that illuminate the night. The story depicts a clash between village and city\, hand crafted and mechanized\, rich and poor – and throughout the tumult\, the heart and soul of the people beats on as a song. \n2013 | Animated Feature | Portuguese (spoken backwards) | 80 minutes | not rated | Directed by Alê Abreu \nGenerously supported by Bank of America.

DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm \nSponsored by the Covington Family Fund  \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque 36 presents Daniel Doña\, winner of the 2019 Max Prize for best male dancer\, and his awe-inspiring company of dancers and musicians to Festival Flamenco Alburquerque for the first time in the U.S. premiere of Entre Hilos y Huesos. \n“What political passion or war tears apart\, art can sew back together with its winged hands\, with its subtle and invisible needle and thread.” – Gregorio Marañón \nEntre Hilos y Huesos is the latest choreographic imagining of the company DDC Danza\, directed by dancer and choreographer Daniel Doña. SUMMARY:Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave
DESCRIPTION:The Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave) exhibition explores and celebrates the landscape\, culture\, and traditions that gave birth to tequila\, Mexico’s national drink. In this series\, photographer Joel Salcido includes the original distilleries that literally founded the industry\, as well as several artisanal tequileras committed to the ancestral ways of making tequila from harvest to bottle.  Objects and paintings related to the theme of agave will be on display from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum Permanent Collection; loans from the Museum of International Folk ARt and the Folk Art Museum of Central Texas; and artists Heiley Marmolejo\, Lydia Madrid\, Arnold Puentes\, and Juliana Kirwin. \nJoin us for a free public reception on June 16 from 5pm-7pm in the Art Museum.
