She will focus on the history and contributions of the communities of Albuquerque\, Santa Fe\, Pueblo of Isleta as well as sacred sites\, the Gila River and Rio Grande. \nValerie Rangel earned a Master’s Degree in Community Regional Planning with an emphasis in environmental and natural resource management\, indigenous planning and public health. Her education involved environmental science\, southwest history\, Native American studies and cultural anthropology. Having taught college science courses\, she presently works as an environmental planning and public health assessment consultant and community program manager for the New Mexico Community Foundation (NMCF) and volunteers as a river steward and social justice activist. \nThis event is free and open to the public

Since the beginning of the 9th century\, when the tomb was discovered\, Santiago de Compostela has been a pan-European place of peregrination. The city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985\, and the European Union declared the Camino de Santiago to be the first European Cultural Itinerary in 1987. According to Catholic tradition\, completing a pilgrimage on the Camino\, some 500 miles along the major routes\, assures forgiveness of one’s sins. The walk now attracts people of all faiths and backgrounds\, and over 200\,000 contemporary pilgrims embark on the journey each year. \nThe April films\, as well as the first May film\, in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series\, presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Resource Center\, have been selected for their insights into different elements of the Way\, capturing the spiritual significance and the rich history of this iconic pilgrimage.

DESCRIPTION:In April 2019\, we made lemonade out of lemons in the Art Museum. Not real lemonade\, because food and drink aren’t allowed in the Museum! \nWe were expecting construction\, and to keep the art safe\, it had to be put in storage. We took the families participating in our Saturday program\, Vamos al Museo into the Museum to look at blank walls. Crazy right?!  It turned in to one of our favorite art making experiences during this program. Our source for art making inspiration were the wall labels that accompany the art\, written by our curators  which often include statements from the artists. Art makers from age 2 – 80 years old participated.\n \n \nClick HERE and find three wall labels from popular art pieces in the museum. Rather than forcing students to code-switch\, they are asked about where they come from and to relate that to the course material. The goal is to create an environment where all students\, regardless of their physical/mental ability\, racial/sexual/gender identity\, feel safe. Safe to participate. Safe to engage. And therefore safe to learn.\n$63.93 or $84.91 for groups \n \nI am often the only black girl in the room\, going to school\, that was my identity. After 16 years of schooling I have yet to have 1 black teacher. I can name on one hand how often I was assigned readings by people who identified as black. This is more than implicit bias\, this is racism. This is rooted in the historically oppressive idea that\, education is meant to assimilate. It communicates to our students that we do not value them\, or their culture. It says\, once they learn how to speak and act like nonmarginalized group members do they have anything to offer the world. \nSchedule:\n10 am – Key terms and Current Events. Do we say underprivileged? Disadvantaged? Marginalized? POC? Women or womxn? Let’s discuss. \n11 am – Designing your syllabus to be Culturally Responsive. What policies do you have listed that build in disadvantages for already marginalized students? \n12 pm – How to embrace Open Educational Resources. Learn how How to create your own free textbook and curriculum which is more reflective of your student body. \n1 pm-2 pm – Break for Lunch \n2 pm – What material should be off-limits? We should embrace pop culture and works of fiction\, yet where is the line between education and problematic? \n3 pm – Engaging students of color\, what’s offensive? The one day my teachers would bring up African Americans was during Black History Month. They would then turn to me\, the student\, to educate the class simply because of the amount of melanin in my skin. The teachers thought they were being inclusive but clearly that wasn’t the case. Let’s talk about intentions and how they can produce a very different impact. \n4 pm – When we say\, “I’m just preparing them for the real world\, what are we actually saying?” The word we use to vocalize our motivations often reveal our own implicit biases\, how do we reconcile that? \n4:30 pm-5 pm – Networking and Problem Solving: I will hand out case studies so you can workshop ideas and strategies with your fellow educators. DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center will launch its first summer reading program for students in grades 3 and 4 who need help with reading. This program is part of the Bilingual Children’s Book Festival \nStudents will read with trained tutors on a weekly basis in the NHCC library during the summer months\, June-August\, 2019. The NHCC library includes a collection of bilingual children’s books (Spanish and English) as well as age-appropriate books in English that are focused on Hispanic/Latino culture. \nStudents must have transportation to the NHCC or live close enough to walk or bike to the center. \nThe NHCC is looking for 20 students who want to participate in the program. In 2018 the NHCC launched a series of community writing workshops in memoir\, fiction and poetry. DESCRIPTION:As a final celebration of Women’s History month and in connection with the NHCC’s current exhibition “Qué Chola\,” high school students across the Albuquerque area were invited to submit visual work they had created. Artists were asked to think critically and broadly while examining the experiences of women and the role of gender identity in today’s society. DESCRIPTION:March—10:30 am\nFiesta—12 noon-3:30 pm \nCivil rights and labor leader César Chávez was born on March 31\, 1927 in Yuma\, AZ. Every year since his untimely death in 1993\, the Recuerda a César Chávez Committee has commemorated the birth of this humble civil rights leader by marching in his honor and celebrating his life with music\, dancing\, poetry and enjoyable\, culturally enriched activities for children. Our event is designed to educate the entire family about César Chávez and the farm worker movement. The Recuerda a César Chávez Committee is made up of organizations and individual volunteers who want to see Chávez’s legacy of peaceful activism continue for generations to come. Our mission is to educate our youth and communities about the legacy\, life and work of this great civil rights leader—César Chávez.\nFree public event \n \nMarch for Justice: 10:30 am-12 pm\nIn the tradition of César Chávez and Dolores Huerta\, we will take to the streets of the South Valley and Barelas neighborhood in honor of the farm worker movement. The March for Justice (or “la marcha de justicia”) will step off at 10:40 a.m. from the north parking lot of the NHCC\, moving north on 4th Street. Come march alongside Dolores Huerta as the Aztec dancers lead the way. Chants from the Chicano and farm worker movement will echo through the streets as our community volunteers and leaders march. The pace for la marcha will be slow so that everyone can participate. We will complete the two-mile loop by around noon…returning south from 8th Street where we join the Fiesta on the NHCC’s beautiful Plaza Mayor. \nFiesta: 12 pm-3:30 pm\nCésar Chávez believed that community connections were best strengthened through personal relationships . That meant sharing a meal\, having fun and including the whole family. So it is our mission every year to celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved civil rights leader with a fiesta combining food\, music\, dancing\, information tables\, and activities for children in our Kid’s Corner. New Mexico native and cofounder of the United Farm Workers Union Dolores Huerta will once again honor our event as Keynote Speaker. Señora Huerta continues to be a civil rights icon worldwide to this day. We are also honored to host accomplished actor\, musician\, and composer Daniel Valdez. Additionally\, our event will honor ¡Sí Se Puede! awardees and community leaders Dr. Adelamar Alcantara and Michael Casaus\, and local acts Baracutanga and La Tropa Felizz will provide musical entertainment.

SUMMARY:Revolutions International Theatre Festival: Migrant Songs
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 28\, 2019\nFriday\, March 29\, 2019\n7:15 pm both days \nProduced by Tricklock Company\, the Revolutions International Theatre Festival welcomes performance companies from all over the globe to perform and connect across cultures and communities. For the 19th annual festival\, Tricklock and the NHCC present Migrant Songs. \nMigrant Songs is a choral performance art piece that combines stories and songs from human and non-human migrants. This experimental visual and sound performance incorporates interviews with migrants living in the city of Albuquerque who come from many parts of the world\, including Mexico\, Cuba\, El Salvador\, Costa Rica\, The Philippines\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Syria\, Palestine\, and Vietnam\, to name a few. These stories of human migration are woven together with bird songs from the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico to explore how we think about migration\, our sense of home and dislocation\, as well as the biological role of song in both humans and non-humans.\nFree and open to the public  \n\nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!
