SUMMARY:Tequila en El Torreón
DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation is hosting a Tequila Tasting Event on June 29th\, 2023 at 6:00 pm at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Torreón. This includes tastings of five different tequilas\, led by Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits Director of Mixology Michael Trujillo and a five-course food pairing by Chef Marcus Montoya. The funds raised from this event will be used to support the presentation of the Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave) exhibition at the NHCC Art Museum. \n$150 \n \nThe Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave) exhibition explores and celebrates the landscape\, culture\, and traditions that gave birth to tequila\, Mexico’s national drink. In this series\, photographer Joel Salcido includes the original distilleries that founded the industry\, as well as several artisanal tequileras committed to the ancestral ways of making tequila from harvest to bottle. Objects and paintings related to the theme of agave will be on display from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum Permanent Collection as well as loans from various institutions and artist Hailey Marmolejo.

SUMMARY:New Mexico Shakespeare Festival: Comedy of Errors
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nBringing Shakespeare to Life in New Mexico! The New Mexico Shakespeare Festival believes that Shakespeare is for everyone – whether you’ve seen dozens of plays or none at all. You are invited to join them on the National Hispanic Cultural Center Plaza Mayor to enjoy a wonderful performance! \nComedy of Errors  |  Directed by Paul Ford \nFree community event. Tickets will be available at the event one hour prior to the performance. \n \nDirector’s Note: It could be argued that Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors has no socially redeeming value.  A very young William Shakespeare cobbled together his own take on several ancient Roman comedies – zapped it with a modern sensibility – wrote in better jokes – added more plot twists – and included a dash of his growing romantic brilliance – and voilà.  It’s all that and it is more. It is filled with mad-dash playful action interrupted by stand-up routines – mistaken identities and their hilarious consequences – melodramatic longing and joyous reunions. \nAt its heart\, is a play about the exuberance of youth. The Comedy of Errors does not shed new light on the human condition or plumb the depths of the human psyche. It throws a brilliant and playful spotlight on the simple follies of humble humans. It is a play about us.  How nice of Shakespeare to send us this giggling love letter 400 years ago. He knew we would open it with glee. \n\nThe event is a rental event not an NHCC production. The title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. By serving as a venue and posting the event on its website\, the NHCC is not endorsing any views expressed in the title or description of the event\, nor is it endorsing the content of the event.

SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Azaletik azalera
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nWith this award-winning short film\, Mel Arranz has managed to place himself within the interesting panorama of animation made in the Basque Country. His piece\, colored in various shades of black and white\, began to take shape during his artistic stay in Mexico and is a visual experiment: his short film manages to demonstrate a bodily intimacy through the detail shots of the touching of skins\, hardly representable in live-action cinema. \nFree Community Event \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible. This year\, the program dedicated to highlighting the celebration of LGTBIQ+ Pride Day comes from the Basque festival Zinegoak\, which celebrates its twenty years of existence with the presentation of an animated film series whose films address this theme on our Vimeo channel. Throughout four weeks\, we will see short films that showcase a wide range of identities and LGTBIQ+ collectives through the different techniques that animation provides\, and we will also have the opportunity to enjoy several short films by young creators from Basque Country. \nProgram\nJuly 4: Azaletik azalera (2021)\, by Mel Arranz\nJuly 7: La mesa\, (2018) by Adrian Garcia Gomez\nJuly 11: Beti Bezperako Koplak (2016)\, by varios cineastas\nJuly 14: Thara (2018)\, by Paco Ramírez y Tanya O’Carroll\nJuly 18: Dejarse crecer el cuerpo (2018)\, by Andrea Gudiño\nJuly 21: Ezohikoak (2022)\, by Alejandra Bueno\nJuly 25: Garelako (2015)\, by Usue Egia\nJuly 28: Makun (‘No llores’) (2015)\, by Emilio Martí

SUMMARY:New Mexico Shakespeare Festival: A Midsummer Night's Dream
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nBringing Shakespeare to Life in New Mexico! The New Mexico Shakespeare Festival believes that Shakespeare is for everyone – whether you’ve seen dozens of plays or none at all. You are invited to join them on the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor and enjoy a wonderful performance! \nA Midsummer Night’s Dream |  Directed by Julia Thudium \nFree community event. Tickets will be available at the event one hour prior to the performance. \n \nDirector’s Note: If Samhain or Halloween is the night\, where the veils between the living and the dead are thin\, in many cultures\, Midsummer is the night that the Faeries come out and play\, the night when you dance around the bonfire in the forest\, only to realize you are not dancing alone and when you open your eyes the next morning\, you’re not sure if what you experienced was real or simply a vision. \nThis performance is set in the magical moment between waking and sleeping – the slow surfacing from the depths of your dreamscape – the liminal space on the threshold of beginning. In order to have a beginning you need to have a before-time. It’s here where we find our Midsummer. The Italians have a word for this before-time: Dormiveglia\, the space that stretches between sleeping and waking. Not many people know this\, but it is in this place that the Faeries rule. Everything is possible in the moments you dwell here; the sweet\, the sad\, the irreverent and the ridiculous. If you know me\, you know I prefer the ridiculous over just about anything. \nLast year when I took on As You Like It\, I coined it the “Party Show” of the Festival. This year is something a little different. This year we are THE HEART show. I invite you to let yourself sink here in this moment in the no-time. Let yourself be enchanted and pause in the mystic doorway with us. \n\nThe event is a rental event not an NHCC production. The title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Dejarse crecer el cuerpo
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nAs part of her thesis project\, filmmaker Andrea Gudiño proposed this animated documentary that brings us closer to the issue of sexual binarism. The possibility of using the experiences and personal testimonies of real people who do not appear in the image but are generated from an original use of materials and cinematographic techniques\, achieves an enormous visual and didactic impact\, one of the most effective resources in an animated documentary like this one. The short film is an interesting approach to different ways of conceiving identity\, the relationship with one’s own body and love. \nFree Community Event \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible. SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Ezohikoak
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nThrough a work with archival photographs\, the animator Alejandra Bueno creates a reinterpretation of the presence of women in Basque culture\, which combines the manipulation and intervention of these images with the oral enumeration of the functions traditionally attributed to women. The result is a provocative display of how to assume and reverse the elements of tradition and its representation to show its fissures and to open those meanings that are no longer viable or sustainable. In the process\, we will witness new representations of gender and sexual orientations that further dynamite the critical discourse. \nProgram\nJuly 4: Azaletik azalera (2021)\, by Mel Arranz\nJuly 7: La mesa\, (2018) by Adrian Garcia Gomez\nJuly 11: Beti Bezperako Koplak (2016)\, by various directors\nJuly 14: Thara (2018)\, by Paco Ramírez and Tanya O’Carroll\nJuly 18: Dejarse crecer el cuerpo (2018)\, by Andrea Gudiño\nJuly 21: Ezohikoak (2022)\, by Alejandra Bueno\nJuly 25: Garelako (2015)\, by Usue Egia\nJuly 28: Makun (‘No llores’) (2015)\, by Emilio Martí

SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Garelako
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nWith a song by Eneko Sagardoy as a thematic and narrative pillar\, the writer and animator Usue Egia proposes a journey through various characters and stories that illustrate a call for freedom to everyone to define themselves and feel as they wish. \nGarelako\, by Eneko Sagardoy: “The gray sky will not suffocate us. We will flee to the sun. They want to put straw hearts on us. Let us feel what we prefer. If the bird’s wings are for walking\, if the whale is denied the sea\, we will see nothing but fiction. If above all words is the lie\, we will go forward\, whether you like it or not. If someone is free\, it is because we are all free. We will truly live with you or without you. You will realize it sooner or later. We are not monsters; we do not eat anyone. The sun warms us\, and the rain wets us. Now you have realized: we are flesh and blood\, like you. Marichico or Marichica\, they call us. Stop talking banally. Learn one thing well and keep it in your head\, that the only Mari is the one of Anboto”. \nFree community event \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible.
