Diwali is one of India’s biggest Hindu festivals\, celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness. The festival lasts five continuous days\, and the third day is celebrated as the main Diwali festival or ‘Festival of Lights.’ Different colorful varieties of fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day\, people light up diyas and candles all around their house. They perform Laxmi Puja in the evening and seek the divine blessings of Goddess of Wealth. The festival of Diwali is never complete without the exchange of gifts. DESCRIPTION:9:30 am in-person\n10:30 am Zoom \nOur Colcha Community Stich-A-Long is open to all levels of experience in an informal setting. This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught colcha\, a Spanish Colonial embroidery style\, to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award-winning artist\, most recently recognized in 2019 at Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe. Annette will demonstrate as well as answer questions. Join us every month on the fourth Tuesday\, in-person at 9:30am and on Zoom at 10:30am. DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm \nNHCC | Salón Ortega \nInstituto Cervantes Albuquerque is organizing a double presentation in New Mexico and Texas of the latest novel by José Ángel Mañas: Guerrero\, published in English by the University of New Mexico Press (UNM Press) and distributed nationally in the United States. \nAfter the publication of Conquistadores de lo imposible\, one of the best novels ever written about the conquest of America\, Mañas delves once again into the modern era and recreates\, with this absolutely real story\, what is perhaps the most singular life event in the whole of Spanish-American history: the story of Gonzalo Guerrero\, known as ‘the renegade.’ Guerroro was a Spaniard who\, after being shipwrecked on the Yucatán peninsula\, where he was captured by the Indigenous Mayan population\, ended up marrying the princess Za’asil and later fought against the Spaniards themselves. \nBoth presentations\, to be held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque (NM) and the University of Texas at El Paso UTEP (TX) in collaboration with the University of New Mexico (UNM)\, are part of the Oralidad programme\, through which the Cervantes Institute promotes the culture of oral tradition and storytellers. \nThe author will be accompanied in Albuquerque by the executive director of the Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque Silvia Grijalba and the director of the UNM Press Stephen Hull\, and in El Paso by UTEP associate professor Andrea Cote. \nFree community event\, limited seating on a first-come\, first-serve basis. \n

On Dec. 12\, join us for a holiday celebration illuminated by the world’s tallest ‘Luminito\,’ a 20-foot-tall\, steel-reinforced structure inspired by New Mexico’s traditional holiday lights. The Luminito will be lit up during the event\, spreading holiday cheer throughout the Center.  \nThroughout the evening\, the event will be further illuminated with festive lights and images projected onto some of the Center’s iconic buildings\, offering a modern twist on traditional holiday lights. These projected lights will remain at the Center during evenings throughout the holiday season. DESCRIPTION:12:00 – 1:00 pm \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center and New Mexico Arts are proud to unveil a public art project transforming a concrete planter on NHCC’s campus into a dynamic\, three-dimensional mosaic inspired by New Mexico’s acequias. The Acequia Revitalization Project will be revealed to the public on Friday\, Dec. 13.  \nAcequias are the lifeblood of New Mexico\, NHCC and NMA are proud to honor the generations of New Mexican men and women who use acequias to grow crops and feed their communities. During the unveiling\, hear from Padilla and representatives from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs\, NHCC\, NMA\, and ALMA about what makes this project special.  \nThe Acequia Revitalization Project\, aimed at reimagining the ‘Paseo Acequia\,’ a concrete\, above-ground acequia previously used as a planter on the east side of NHCC’s campus. In 2022\, Albuquerque-based painter and muralist Reyes Padilla was selected for the project. Working with students from Apprenticeships for Leaders in Mosaic Arts (ALMA)\, Padilla transformed the Paseo Acequia into a colorful artwork showcasing the multicultural history of acequia use in New Mexico through mosaic and concrete stain. Inside\, solar lights symbolize the ever-changing flow of acequias.  \nThe project was commissioned through NMA’s Art in Public Places program\, which enriches New Mexico’s public spaces through an innovative and diverse public art collection. Since it was established in 1986\, the Art in Public Places program has placed more than 3\,000 works of art in all of New Mexico’s 33 counties.

Featuring Clay Hilley & Sara Duchovnay \nClose out 2024 and begin 2025 with featured performers tenor Clay Hilley and soprano Sara Duchovnay. Clay Hilley makes an exciting return to Opera Southwest after his stunning portrayal of Radamès in “Aida” back in 2015. Clay comes to us directly from the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has earned rave reviews from the New York Times and Financial Times\, and he continues to shine in some of opera’s most illustrious heroic roles. Her interdisciplinary work also focuses on heritage language pedagogy and its intersections with bilingual education. SUMMARY:East Mountain Dance: Cinderella!
DESCRIPTION:2:00 pm & 6:30 pm \nEast Mountain Dance presents a fairytale favorite\, “Cinderella!” the ballet. Cinderella\, a young woman who is mistreated and underestimated by her stepmother and stepsisters\, overcomes adversity and hardship with a little encouragement\, guidance\, and magic from her mystical Fairy Godmother. Join us as we follow Cinderella from dust and rags\, through a garden of fairies\, to a splendid ball at the palace\, and back home where she finds herself awakening from the dream that is about to become her reality. \nSet to the melodious music by composer Sergei Prokofiev\, first premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet in 1945 and presented by ballet companies around the world\, Cinderella is now coming to the National Hispanic Cultural Center stage and being performed by local New Mexico students from East Mountain Dance. \nApprox run time: 2 hours \n*The event is a rental event not an NHCC production.
