DESCRIPTION:7 pm\nMuseum of International Folk Art Facebook page HERE \nEvery year the NHCC holds its annual Despedida (Farewell) to celebrate Día de los Muertos with music\, poetry\, and hands-on art at this time-honored community gathering. Unfortunately\, with the current health restrictions\, this year’s Despedida is another wonderful in-person event that has been canceled. We are going to miss our ofrendas around the NHCC campus\, as well as the music\, poetry\, traditional hot chocolate mexicano\, pan de muerto\, and the opportunity to share our heartfelt memories with you\, our familia. \nBut we can still celebrate\, and we hope you will join our friends at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) for a virtual Día de los Muertos concert featuring our friends Carol and Leila—Las Flores del Valle of Albuquerque. \nFree community event \n \nCarol Vigil and Leila Flores-Dueñas comprise a New Mexico women’s dueto\, whose smooth harmonies are reminiscent of the many hermanas duos that became famous during the 1960s. These groups helped form the lasting harmony structures of today’s U.S./Mexico Borderlands music scene. Accompanied by multi-talented musician and cultural anthropologist David F. Garcia\, Las Flores del Valle aim to preserve and share the nuances of the many musical genres that are representative of their family histories. \nLas Flores del Valle have shared their talents at venues such as the Gene Autry Theater in Los Angeles and Universidad Pedadógica Nacional in México City\, as well as the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This has allowed them to showcase their forte of preserving cultural traditions and Southwest history through the arts. They are also known for their presentations on life along the U.S./Mexico border\, covering topics such as the role of corridos (stories told in song) in Mexican and Southwestern music\, soldaderas of the Mexican Revolution\, Día de los Muertos\, and women’s roles in Borderland music.

DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MTS) \nRSVP for this online event here. \nVirtual Reading and Discussion: Sergio Troncoso\, A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son (Cinco Punto Press\, 2019) \nPresented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center in collaboration with Bookworks. How does a Mexican-American\, the son of poor immigrants\, leave his border home and move to the heart of gringo America? How does he adapt to the worlds of wealth\, elite universities\, the rush and power of New York City? How does he make peace with a stern old-fashioned father who has only known hard field labor his whole life? With echoes of Dreiser’s American Tragedy and Fitzgerald’s Gatsby\, Troncoso tells his luminous stories through the lens of an exile adrift in the 21st century\, his characters suffering from the loss of culture and language\, the loss of roots and home as they adapt to the glittering promises of new worlds which ultimately seem so empty. A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son is the recipient of a Silver Award for Multicultural Adult Fiction from Foreword Reviews Book of the Year Awards\, and a Best of Texas 2019 by Lone Star Literary Life. \n \nSergio Troncoso is the author of The Last Tortilla and Other Stories and Crossing Borders: Personal Essays\, and the novels The Nature of Truth and From This Wicked Patch of Dust. He has taught at the Yale Writers’ Workshop for many years. A Fulbright scholar and winner of numerous literary awards\, Troncoso was inducted into the Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Hall of Fame and the Texas Institute of Letters. He was born in El Paso\, Texas\, and attended Harvard College and Yale University\, where he earned graduate degrees in international relations and philosophy.

SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos: Lesson Plans
DESCRIPTION:Día de los Muertos is observed on November 1st and 2nd in many countries across Latin American. The celebration is the result of a blending of Catholic Spanish traditions with Indigenous customs and beliefs. It is believed that on Día de los Muertos the veil between the spirit world and real world is lifted long enough for the souls of the deceased to reunite with their families and friends. Those who celebrate Día de los Muertos welcome home the spirits of lost loved ones with music\, food\, offerings\, and other colorful visuals traditions that vary from country to country and region to region. \nIn honor of Día de los Muertos\, we have developed a series of lesson plans that celebrate several of the visual traditions unique to this colorful Latin American holiday. Join us in making a tapete de arena like the ones found in Oaxaca\, México\, in crafting a barrilete inspired by the giant kites that soar over the cities of Santiago Sacatepéquez and Sumpango\, Guatemala\, or in designing a myth-based costume worthy of La Calabiuza in Tonacatapeque\, El Salvador. YPA is constantly seeking to build a community that offers professional development\, social\, and civic opportunities to help empower Albuquerque’s future leaders. Register HERE  \nOur friends and partners at Teatro Paraguas are presenting a live Zoom performance of Volver\, Volver\, Volver\, a play by New Mexico playwright Leonard Madrid.  Both Teatro Paraguas and Leonard Madrid have collaborated on various projects with the NHCC’s Performing Arts program over the years. \nIn Volver\, Volver\, Volver\, which premiered at the NHCC in 2009\, a young man who led a fast and reckless life is called back from the dead by an unknown bruja in Portales\, and finds the inner peace that eluded him in life. \n \nLeonard Madrid works as a designer\, actor\, playwright\, and educator in Albuquerque. His plays Tecolotito\, Perla\, and Aurora have received the Kennedy Center’s KCACTF Latino Playwriting Award. Other works have received readings and performances around the nation. His participation in the production of Stories of Barelas was a highlight of our 2018-2019 season. \nTeatro Paraguas has collaborated with the NHCC for many years\, producing many works for our Siembra: Latino Theatre Seasons. The Santa Fe-based company stages contemporary award-winning Latinx plays in English and bilingual productions of Hispanic/Latinx poetry and classic cuentos (folk tales)\, while promoting children’s theatre\, producing the works of New Mexico playwrights\, and celebrating the history\, richness\, and diversity of New Mexico’s many cultures and artistic talents.

DESCRIPTION:The Bosque Gallery at the NHCC Is an outdoor exhibition space opening on October 23. The open-air gallery will consist of 31 panels measuring 48 inches by 60 inches each\, mounted on 730 feet of fencing along the western border of the NHCC campus\, facing the Paseo del Bosque Trail. \nIn celebration of the NHCC’s 20th anniversary\, the first exhibition presented along the open-air Bosque Gallery will be ¡Mira! Nuestra Arquitectura: An Architectural Journey\, an architectural history of NHCC’s past\, present\, and future. \nExhibitions at Bosque Gallery will rotate among the key program areas of the NHCC – History and Literary Arts\, Visual Arts\, and Performing Arts – and will include topics that support the Center’s mission to preserve\, promote\, and advance Hispanic culture\, arts\, and humanities. Inspiration for Bosque Gallery comes from Las Rejas de Chapultepec in Chapultepec Park in Mexico City. \nFor more information on the ¡Mira! DESCRIPTION:9:30 am (MTS)\nA virtual first day of issue ceremony held on the Postal Service’s Facebook and Twitter pages:\nusps.com/guapulo\, facebook.com/USPS\, and twitter.com/USPS \nThe United States Postal Service is partnering with the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) on the release of the Our Lady of Guápulo Christmas forever stamp. \nThe event will include remarks from Postal Service Vice President for Retail and Post Office Operations Angela Curtis and NHCC Art Museum and Visual Arts Program Director and Chief Curator Dr. Tey Marianna Nunn\, and entertainment will be provided by NHCC History and Literary Arts Program Director Valerie Martinez and the Harlem School of the Arts. \n \nDesigned by Greg Breeding\, the stamp features a detail of “Our Lady of Guápulo\,” an 18th-century oil painting by an unknown artist in Cuzco\, Peru\, from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Enrobed in a pyramidal gown speckled with jewels and holding a scepter woven with roses and leaves\, a crowned Virgin Mary looks down at a similarly adorned Christ child in her left arm. A red rosary ropes across the center of her dress and down to her right. \nBetween the 16th and 18th centuries\, European painters worked with indigenous artists in and around Cuzco. The Europeans trained local artists in styles and forms that dominated their home countries at the end of the Renaissance period and during the Baroque era. \nOur Lady of Guápulo is a local variant of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Extremadura\, Spain. The image venerated as Our Lady of Guápulo originated as a sculpture\, commissioned in Quito\, Ecuador\, in 1584 and transferred to a chapel in the nearby village of Guápulo in 1587.

Every year since his death\, the Recuerda a César Chávez Committee has commemorated the birth of this unique\, humble leader by marching in his honor and celebrating his life with music\, dancing\, poetry\, and enjoyable\, culturally enriched activities for children. Chávez was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 1994. Our event is designed to educate the entire family about César Chávez and the farm worker movement. The Recuerda a César Chávez Committee is made up of organizations and individual volunteers who want to see Chávez’s legacy of peaceful activism continue for generations to come. Our mission is to educate our youth and communities about the legacy\, life\, and work of this great civil rights leader—César Chávez. \nA native of Dawson\, New Mexico\, Dolores Huerta was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farmworkers Union. She was also recognized with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012 for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing\, and continues to be a civil rights icon worldwide to this day. At the corner of 4th Street and Avenida César Chávez\, beside the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, the new Avenida Dolores Huerta connects with Avenida César Chávez\, making it the first intersection in the country to have streets named after the two civil rights leaders who worked side by side.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 14\, 2020\n6 pm (MDT) \nVirtual Reading and Discussion: Ray Gonzalez\, Feel Puma: Poems (University of New Mexico Press\, 2020) \nRSVP for the online event HERE. \n \nPresented by Bookworks\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and the University of New Mexico Press. In Feel Puma\, Ray Gonzalez traces his love of reading\, philosophy\, and learning with poems constantly in conversation—with each other\, with texts by other writers and the writers themselves\, with world history and his personal history and people he has encountered. \nRay Gonzalez is the author of fifteen books of poetry\, including The Heat of Arrivals (1997)\, winner of the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Book Award; Cabato Sentora (2000)\, a Minnesota Book Award Finalist; The Hawk Temple at Tierra Grande (2003)\, winner of the 2003 Minnesota Book Award; Consideration of the Guitar: New & Selected Poems (2005); Cool Auditor: Prose Poems (2009); and Beautiful Wall (2015). Gonzalez is also the author of three collections of essays\, two collections of short stories\, and the editor of twelve anthologies. He has served as the poetry editor for the Bloomsbury Review for thirty-five years and in 1998\, founded the poetry journal LUNA. Gonzales is a professor in the MFA Creative Writing Program at the University of Minnesota. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Literature from the Border Regional Library Association in 2003. \n

SUMMARY:Herrera Internship Endowment
DESCRIPTION:The Herrera Internship Endowment was created by Dr. Denise Herrera to honor her parents (Yolanda and Fred Herrera) and grandparents (Reyna and Mariano Herrera)\, who did not have the opportunity to pursue higher education. As a native New Mexican\, Dr. Herrera has dedicated much of her academic and professional career to the advancement of underrepresented groups in higher education. As a participant in several diversity programs herself\, Dr. Herrera has mentored students from elementary through postdoctoral levels. This internship is intended to honor that tradition of “lifting others while we climb” and paying it forward. The Herrera Internship provides scholarships to Hispanic female students who complete an internship with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \nWe are currently accepting applications for the Herrera Internship!
