SUMMARY:Acequia Revitalization Project Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:12:00 – 1:00 pm \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center and New Mexico Arts are proud to unveil a public art project transforming a concrete planter on NHCC’s campus into a dynamic\, three-dimensional mosaic inspired by New Mexico’s acequias. The Acequia Revitalization Project will be revealed to the public on Friday\, Dec. 13.  \nAcequias are the lifeblood of New Mexico\, NHCC and NMA are proud to honor the generations of New Mexican men and women who use acequias to grow crops and feed their communities. During the unveiling\, hear from Padilla and representatives from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs\, NHCC\, NMA\, and ALMA about what makes this project special.  \nThe Acequia Revitalization Project\, aimed at reimagining the ‘Paseo Acequia\,’ a concrete\, above-ground acequia previously used as a planter on the east side of NHCC’s campus. In 2022\, Albuquerque-based painter and muralist Reyes Padilla was selected for the project. Working with students from Apprenticeships for Leaders in Mosaic Arts (ALMA)\, Padilla transformed the Paseo Acequia into a colorful artwork showcasing the multicultural history of acequia use in New Mexico through mosaic and concrete stain. Inside\, solar lights symbolize the ever-changing flow of acequias.  \nThe project was commissioned through NMA’s Art in Public Places program\, which enriches New Mexico’s public spaces through an innovative and diverse public art collection. Since it was established in 1986\, the Art in Public Places program has placed more than 3\,000 works of art in all of New Mexico’s 33 counties.

Featuring Clay Hilley & Sara Duchovnay \nClose out 2024 and begin 2025 with featured performers tenor Clay Hilley and soprano Sara Duchovnay. Clay Hilley makes an exciting return to Opera Southwest after his stunning portrayal of Radamès in “Aida” back in 2015. Of her 2019 role debut as Nedda in Pagliacci with Opera Roanoke\, the Roanoke Times praised her “nuanced portrait of an unhappy woman” and “her high notes [which] rang out with ease at the swelling climaxes in both her first act aria and in her love duet with Silvio.”  \nAccompanying our singers are the Opera Southwest Orchestra\, the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus\, and the Albuquerque Youth Symphony. With a variety of opera favorites and light classics\, there is something for everyone to ring in the New Year. \nRunning time: Approx 2 hours \n$35\, $47\, $60\, $72\, & $85 with discounts for students and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Volavérunt
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 96 hours)\nAll the films can be seen in the link below:\nhttps://vimeo.com/showcase/aitana-sanchez-gijon-goya-honor \nInstituto Cervantes Film Series Celebrating Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, winner of the 2025 Honorary Goya Award from the Spanish Film Academy \nThis blockbuster\, Volavérunt\, directed by Bigas Luna with an international cast and crew\, stars Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, who plays the Duchess of Alba. Doña Cayetana was a key woman in the court of King Carlos IV with a personality based on intrigue\, passion\, and desire. \nThe film’s title evokes an ambiguity that can be traced back to Goya’s Caprichos engraving no. 61\, which shares the title of this film. The film’s grandious photography and costumes bring the lavish world of the late 18th century to life. \nSynopsis: One morning in the summer of 1802\, Cayetana\, the Duchess of Alba\, is found dead. A few hours before\, at the inauguration party at her palace\, many of her admirers and detractors were present: Goya\, Godoy\, Prince Ferdinand\, Pepita Tudó and Pignatelli\, among them. Although it is admitted as official version that the beautiful duchess died of natural causes\, later confessions and revealed secrets invite to think that Cayetana could have been poisoned. [Source: Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA) database]. \nScreening: Volavérunt |  Director: Bigas Luna | Year: 1999 | Format: Digital | Running time: Largometraje – 118 min | Genre: Fiction/Ficción | Country: France and Spain | Original version: Spahish/español | Subtitles: English/inglés\, French/francés\, Italian/italiano\, Portuguese/portugués de Brasil y español | Rated PG13/Calificacion: 13+ \n \nThe annual programming on the Cervantes Institute’s Vimeo channel begins with a cycle dedicated to actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón\, who will receive the Goya Honorary Award 2025 on February 8 in Granada. \nAs expressed by the president of the Film Academy\, Fernando Méndez-Leite\, she is “an actress much loved and respected by her peers and recognized by the public and critics since her beginnings. A complete actress: serious\, responsible\, competent\, approachable and who knows how to give truth\, sincerity and depth to all her work”. \nThe titles in the series have been selected by the artist herself: in addition to Volavérunt\, a film by Bigas Luna for which she was awarded Best Actress at the San Sebastian Festival\, her proposal includes essential films from the end of the 20th century directed by outstanding directors of Spanish cinema\, such as Vicente Aranda\, Bigas Luna\, Jaime Chávarri and Fernando Colomo. \nProgram\n*February 6: Volavérunt (1999)\, by Bigas Luna\n*February 13: Celos (1999)\, by Vicente Aranda\n*February 20: Sus ojos se cerraron y el mundo sigue andando (1996)\, by Jaime Chávarri\n*February 27: Bajarse al moro (1988)\, by Fernando Colomo

SUMMARY:NHCC Book Club (Postponed)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event has been postponed at the request of the author. A new date and time will be announced soon. We apologize for any inconvenience. \nThe NHCC invites lovers of literature\, folks who love to read\, and those who enjoy talking about the history and vast the array of identities that contribute to Latinidad/Hispanidad to join us! We will meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month in the Center’s HLA Conference Room. \nThis month\, we will be reading Nuclear Nuevo México: Colonialism and the Effects of the Nuclear Industrial Complex on Nuevomexicanos by Myrriah Gomez. This book tells the story of the Manhattan Project\, and its displacement of Nuevomexicanas/os and Tewa people. Contrary to previous works that suppress Nuevomexicana/o presence throughout U.S. nuclear history\, Nuclear Nuevo México focuses on recovering the voices and stories that have been lost or ignored in the telling of this history. There will be a Q&A with the author after a brief book talk. \nFree community event. Please let us know who will be attending by registering below.

Aitana Sánchez-Gijón’s character makes a place for herself among her three co-stars who are already part of the canon of our best performers. \nSynopsis: Chusa shares an apartment with her cousin\, a drug dealer\, and her boyfriend\, a policeman. To help her cousin\, Chusa sometimes smuggles weed from Morocco. Since everyone smokes a little\, there is always a need for more. The film features Albuquerque poet Marcial Delgado\, who has been invited to create a dialogue between the community of poets in Albuquerque writing on immigration and Dr. Laura Belmonte\, an Associate Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at UNM and author of the book Borderland Brutalities: Violence in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands in Literature\, Culture\, and Art. \nFilm Screening\, Poetry\, and Conversations featuring Ray Santisteban\, Marcial Delgado\, Laura E. Belmonte\, Levi Romero\, Demetria Martinez\, Kristin Patton\, Savannah Rodriguez\, Scarlett Cortez\, Zahra Marwan\, Maragret Randall\, & Michelle Otero. \nFree community event. \n \nThis event will create a space for poets and filmmakers to discuss their artistic practices\, exploring how these mediums can raise awareness about social issues affecting our Hispanic community in Albuquerque and what this means for a sanctuary city. Given the current political climate and the looming presidential policies for the next four years\, there are significant concerns regarding immigration policy and reform\, which must take priority as the future of undocumented individuals in our communities hangs in the balance. By facilitating these discussions and embracing freedom of expression\, we aim to cultivate an environment where people can confront the realities of undocumented individuals and their humanity as they face threats. \nScreening: Savior | Director: Ray Santisteban | Writer: Marciel Delgado | Producer: Ray Santisteban | Talent: Marciel Delgado | Year Released: 2024 | Country: USA | Length: 1:23
