Drinks and snacks will be available to purchase. \nDuring this month’s Happy Arte Hour we will create mixed media collage with artist Micaela Seidel. Micaela is a multi-media artist who has worked throughout New Mexico for over 20 years as a teacher\, curator and community arts organizer. She has worked on giant puppets\, masks\, costumes\, and floats for several parades. \nHer countless workshops have included gelli-printing\, hat-making\, kites\, cardboard structures\, alebrijes\, and wire and cloth figures\, among others. Since retiring she focusses on the book arts and collage. With lyricism and compassion\, this Sundance Film Festival prize-winning film reveals the medieval nightmare underneath an ambitious utopian dream: Mexico City’s Periferico Beltway\, more than ten miles of elevated reinforced concrete\, supported by massive towers\, that has been planned to both soar above and link the city’s densely gridlocked urban neighborhoods. Its dirty secret: abuse of immigrant labor. BUILDING THE AMERICAN DREAM captures a turning point as a movement forms to fight widespread construction industry injustices. Grieving their son\, a Mexican family campaigns for a life-and-death safety ordinance. A Salvadorian electrician couple owed thousands in back pay fights for their children’s future. A bereaved son battles to protect others from his family’s preventable tragedy. Time and time again\, this documentary has proven to be eye-opening and a heartfelt tribute to the lives of agricultural workers everywhere. \nThe life of a farmworker is a rough life. Many risk it all to arrive in this nation. They have little contact with their families back in their country of origin. They work using only the bare minimum to support their families. The work they do doesn’t provide them with welfare or pandemic pay\, yet it serves as their only source of income. If a farm worker doesn’t work\, they don’t eat. Campesinos makes it clear that farm workers deal with many issues while living under the American Shadow. To make matters worse\, there is a stigma that farm workers are seen as criminals and as other negative caricatures that aren’t true to the reality of farm workers. Farm workers in California produce two-thirds of the nation’s fruits and nuts and over 90% of national production\, a point further elaborated on within the documentary. Agricultural workers aren’t recognized or respected for their back-breaking labor. Some are even disrespected and even seen as less of what they are. \nRun Time: 33 mins

There are approximately 8\,000 Crow (Apsáalooke) tribal members who live there. In 2017\, the Crow Agency laid off 1\,000 of its 1\,300 employees due to federal government cutbacks\, ultimately straining tribal operations and leaving many families struggling to make ends meet. In 2019\, the only grocery store on the reservation burnt down\, and the owners are not planning to rebuild. For the Crow\, the federal and tribal governments are both failing its people. \nThe Crow Tribe— like most tribes— have been reliant on federal\, tribal and non profit food distribution centers. As a result\, tribal nations across the country are exploring the idea of ‘food sovereignty\,’ the inherent right of a community to identify its own food systems. Returning to traditional and nutritious foods has been shown to be an effective way to restore Native food systems and create employment. SUMMARY:Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Billy the Kid & Other Tall Tales
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm Friday\n2:00 pm & 7:00 pm Saturday \nBilly the Kid\, Blue Jean Blues\, Southwest FolkTails\, & Giselle\nFestival Ballet Albuquerque presents an original production of Billy the Kid\, a ballet telling the story of Billy from childhood until his death at age 22\, true to historical accuracy as anyone knows. The ballet has an ensemble of cowboys\, townspeople\, dance hall girls\, and the important people in Billy’s life\, including his beloved Mother\, John Tunstall\, J.J. Dolan\, love interest Maria\, and of course\, Sheriff Pat Garrett. \n \nThe evening begins with the music of the Mystic Vic Blues Band playing live onstage with the FBA professional dancers in Blue Jean Blues choreographed by Patricia Dickinson Wells. A new children’s ballet\, Southwest FolkTails is based on families of New Mexican “critters” sporting tails with character costumes expertly designed and constructed by master craftsman\, Joe Moncada. Imagine hummingbirds\, quails\, coyotes\, snakes\, and roosters! \nThe evening ends with the classical 18th century ballet\, Giselle (in One Act) complete with village scenes\, beautiful costumes\, and scenery. The epic ballet premiered in 1841\, but most of the versions today are based on the revivals by choreographer Marius Petipa in the early 20th century.  Set to music by composer Adolphe Adam\, the epic story follows the tragically short life of Giselle through love\, heartache\, death\, and the after-death where she is summoned from her grave by the vengeful\, deadly sisterhood of the Willis who are unmarried women who died after being betrayed by their lover. Annette has taught colcha\, a Spanish Colonial embroidery style\, to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award-winning artist\, most recently recognized in 2019 at Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe. Annette will demonstrate as well as answer questions. THE HUMAN ZOO uncovers the history of this colonial spectacle\, and follows the fallout into the present. \nWith Chilean historian Christian Baez\, director Hans Mülchi Bremer contacts these native people’s descendants\, and traces their voyage from South America across Europe\, paying particular attention to the fate of Calafate\, a Selk’nam boy who was taken when he was just 9 years old\, and survived to return to his native land. \nOthers were not so lucky.
