SUMMARY:NHCC Book Club: The Last Cuentista/La Ultima Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera
DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm – 7:30 pm \nNHCC | HLA Conference Room \nThe NHCC invites lovers of literature\, folks who love to read\, and those who enjoy talking about the history and the vast array of identities that contribute to Latinidad/Hispanidad to join us! We will meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month in the Center’s HLA Conference Room. \nThe Last Cuentista/La Ultima Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera is September’s book:\nA girl named Petra Peña wanted nothing more than to be a storyteller\, like her abuelita. But Petra’s world is ending. Earth has been destroyed by a comet\, and only a few scientists and their children – among them Petra and her family – have been chosen to journey to a new planet. They must carry on the human race. \nHundreds of years later\, Petra wakes to this new planet – discovering that she is the only person who remembers Earth. A sinister Collective has purged the memories of all aboard\, taken over the ship during its journey\, bent on erasing the sins of humanity’s past. \nPetra alone now carries the stories of our past\, and with them\, any hope for our future. Can she make them live again? \nFree community event. Please let us know who will be attending by registering below.

SUMMARY:NHCC Fall Film Series: I Dream in Another Language
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nThe NHCC Fall Film Series features Hispanic filmmakers that preserve our stories\, promote our experiences and advance the vast cultural identity of our gente. This film series continues with I Dream in Another Language (2017) on Thursday\, Oct. 9. \nA millenary language agonizes: Its last two speakers\, Evaristo and Isauro (70’s) had a quarrel 50 years ago and haven’t spoken to each other since. Martin\, a linguist\, will undertake the challenge of bringing the two old friends back together and convince them to talk again in order for him to be able to obtain a record of the language. Yet\, hidden in the past\, in the core of the jungle\, lies a secret hidden in the language that makes it difficult to believe that the heart of Zikril will beat again. (IMDB). \n“Poetic Mexican film raises philosophical questions about what is lost when a language and by extension\, our elders’ memory is allowed to fade away unpreserved.” (Variety) \nFree Community Event. SUMMARY:Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of NM Speaker Series: Jack R Fox
DESCRIPTION:10:30 – 12:00 pm \nNHCC | Dominici Education Building / Rooms 122-124 \nThe Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico welcomes Retired New Mexico Army National Guard Brigadier General Jack R. Fox for our October HGRC Speaker Series. General Fox will lead a discussion on “The Rough Riders of New Mexico\,” a nickname given to the 1st U.S. Volunteer Calvery Legendary Cowboy Regiment. The Men who served had to already have knowledge and experience capable on horseback and in shooting. One Half the unit came from New Mexico and recruited by Commander Theodore Roosevelt. Las Vegas\, New Mexico celebrates with a museum about “The Rough Riders of New Mexico” as the first regiments gathering place in 1899. \n“On June 24\, 1899\, on the one-year anniversary of the Battle of Las Gusaimas\, about a hundred soldiers who called themselves the Rough Riders gathered together to celebrate victory in the Spanish-American War. Where they gathered wasn’t as important as why.  But when it came time to organize such an event only one Old West town seemed appropriate: Las Vegas. \nYes\, Las Vegas. \nOnly this was not the Las Vegas built in the middle of the Nevada desert. That town’s reputation was still several decades away. \nNo\, this was the City of Las Vegas in the New Mexico territory.”         \n– By Ken Zurski
