SUMMARY:Book Presentation: "Madrid: A Culinary History"
DESCRIPTION:6 pm to 8 pm  \nAs the capital city of Spain\, Madrid is nowadays considered one of the most interesting “food towns” in the world. This is perhaps due to the wide variety of specialty dishes that its cuisine boasts ranging from the old- fashioned and traditional to the modern\, and even the futuristic; a cuisine that has consistently received high praise from the likes of New York Times’ critic Mark Bittman and TV celebrity chefs such as Anthony Bourdain and Mario Battali. \nAuthor Maria-Paz Moreno\, professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Cincinnati\, looks at the gastronomical history of Madrid. SUMMARY:Flamenco Concert: “Lorca in the Keys of Hands and Voice"
DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm to 8:30 pm \nA concert presented by Adam Kent (pianist) and Fernando Barros (flamenco singer)\, is a musical innovation inspired by his example. Lorca collected melodies from the Spanish folklore repertoire and transcribed them for the piano using two different concepts: 1) adapting the old melodies to some of his poem\, and 2) singing the old songs using the expressive\, emotive characteristics inherent to flamenco music. \nAdditionally\, this concert offers a new innovation\, arising from the profound influence Lorca and flamenco music had on the composer\, singer and songwriter\, Leonard Cohen. Our metamorphic reveal consists\, not merely in translating Cohen’s lyrics into Spanish\, but of combining Lorca’s poems that readily adapt to the melodies of Cohen\, like a glove coupled to a hand. \nThis event is part of Semana Cervantina (Cervantine Week) to commemorate the “International Day of the Book” and the “Day of the Spanish Language.”

SUMMARY:La Canoa Legacy Talks: A Lie Halfway Around the World: The Carl Taylor Murder Case
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nGabriel Meléndez of the Center for Regional Studies will discuss “A Lie Halfway Around the World\,” a chapter in his book\, Hidden Chicano Cinema. The chapter explores the shallow mysteries and deep complexities surrounding the death of the travel-adventurer and freelance journalist Carl N. Taylor in 1936. Taylor was murdered as he readied himself to attend a gala event in Albuquerque. What appears as a set of non-sequential links between New Mexico’s chronic poverty\, its religious traditions\, and its reputation as an arts mecca results in a series of unexpected outcomes that stem from the intricate and layered master-chore boy relationship that drew together “the mountain boy\,” Modesto Trujillo\, and his writer-employer\, Carl Taylor. The real-life drama far outstripped Hollywood’s attempt to market its sensationalistic B-movie\, “The Lash of the Penitentes\,” designed to exploit the fears and anxieties of the nation\, Taylor’s tragic death\, and smudge the dignity of the neighbors Taylor had come to know and admire.\nFree event\, open to the public.

SUMMARY:Son Como Son 25th Anniversary: A Retrospective Celebration of Salsa in Albuquerque\, New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nThis 25th anniversary concert is Son Como Son’s tribute to the rich lineage of Cuban music. It is a tribute to the dance—the dance between the Yoruban spiritual world and the Spanish colonialists\, the dance between the past and the future\, the dance where the ocean meets the desert. Most of all\, it is a tribute to the dancers of Albuquerque—to each and every one who has buoyed this ship for the past 25 years and helped to put Albuquerque on the salsa map.\n$24\, $25\, $27 w/ $2 discount for seniors/children 12 and younger\, and $3 discount for NHCC members \n \nIn October 1992\, after building successful musical careers in Cuba and recording and traveling across the globe\, Daniel and César Bauvallet migrated from Havana to Albuquerque\, NM. Finding a thriving salsa scene in their new home\, the Bauvallet brothers jumped right in\, playing with a variety of bands in their first few months on the scene. Almost immediately\, their musical sensibilities began to influence the Latin music soundscape. \nIn the spring of 1993\, César formed his own band\, naming it Son Como Son (“They Are as They Are”)\, and coining the phrase “Salsa Cuban Style.” His vision was to organize an ensemble of skilled musicians\, eager to learn a distinctive form of salsa\, who would play his original compositions and arrangements that were stylistically Cuban. The players\, from a variety of musical backgrounds and levels of experience\, were all devoted to advancing musically and working together; virtually all the current members of Son Como Son have been with the band for at least 24 years. \nEl tiempo sigue su marcha sin parar\, solo perdura lo que es original. Lo que en un breve momento en la vida dejó una huella. (César Bauvallet)

SUMMARY:“Hamilton”: Changing the Way We Learn History
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nDuring this event\, teachers and teens will lead an interactive discussion (with music\, video and lyrics) about why the School Library Journal calls “Hamilton” a “‘darn near perfect’ teaching tool for history” and how rap\, hip hop\, spoken word poetry and other popular genres can newly engage young people (and the rest of us) in learning about historical events. \nThe radiating effects of “Hamilton\,” the musical\, are wide-ranging. The rap/hip hop lyrics have drawn young people to the story of Alexander Hamilton and the birth of a nation. The musical has made a bestseller (again) of Ron Chernow’s biography of Hamilton. Poetry-lovers are finding even more space for rap and hip hop in the narrative canon. And Lin Manuel Miranda has been launched into stardom\, including a 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award and a 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. \n“Hamilton” is also changing the way we understand history. “The primarily black and Hispanic cast reminds audiences that American history is not just the history of white people\, and frequent allusions to slavery serve as constant reminders that just as the revolutionaries were fighting for their freedom\, slaves were held in bondage” (The Atlantic\, 2015). The musical also emphasizes the significant role that immigrants have played in the nation’s history. \nThis event will be facilitated by teens from Albuquerque High\, teens and teachers from Bosque School\, and the NHCC’s Director of History and Literary Arts Valerie Martínez.\nFree public event

SUMMARY:Film: The Rise and Fall of the Brown Buffalo
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nAn innovative\, genre-defying look at the life of radical Chicano lawyer\, author and countercultural icon Oscar Zeta Acosta. His powerful literary voice\, brash courtroom style\, and notorious revolutionary antics made him a revered figure in the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The film weaves archival footage and images with dramatized portrayals of Acosta\, Thompson\, and other key figures and moments of the era. Presented in partnership with New Mexico PBS as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series.\n2018; Philip Rodriguez; English; 57 minutes; not rated (suggested R rating).\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show \nAccompanying the screening will be a discussion by National Hispanic Cultural Center staff about upcoming events and exhibits relating to issues raised by the film\, including Because It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in New Mexico\, a forthcoming exhibit in the Center’s Art Museum; the 25th Annual César Chávez Day March and Fiesta\, presented in partnership with Albuquerque’s Recuerda a César Chávez Committee; and People Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements\, a photo exhibit curated by Humans of New Mexico on display in the Center’s History and Literary Arts Building.
