DESCRIPTION:10:30 am to 12:30 pm \nResidents of Barelas are invited to a series of workshops that will result in a trilogy of plays about the neighborhood. The dates are March 9\, 16\, 23 and 30.  Do you have stories\, images\, characters or incidents about the neighborhood that you’d like to see in a play? In this series of four sessions we will play with words and techniques that reveal our stories and our styles. The workshops will culminate with a public sharing of stories\, anecdotes and scenes at the NHCC.  Workshops will be led by Barelas residents/playwrights Leonard Madrid\, Raúl Garza and Mónica Sánchez. DESCRIPTION:March—10:30 am\nFiesta—12 noon-3:30 pm \nCivil rights and labor leader César Chávez was born on March 31\, 1927 in Yuma\, AZ. Every year since his untimely death in 1993\, the Recuerda a César Chávez Committee has commemorated the birth of this humble civil rights leader by marching in his honor and celebrating his life with music\, dancing\, poetry and enjoyable\, culturally enriched activities for children. Our event is designed to educate the entire family about César Chávez and the farm worker movement. The Recuerda a César Chávez Committee is made up of organizations and individual volunteers who want to see Chávez’s legacy of peaceful activism continue for generations to come. Our mission is to educate our youth and communities about the legacy\, life and work of this great civil rights leader—César Chávez.\nFree public event \n \nMarch for Justice: 10:30 am-12 pm\nIn the tradition of César Chávez and Dolores Huerta\, we will take to the streets of the South Valley and Barelas neighborhood in honor of the farm worker movement. The March for Justice (or “la marcha de justicia”) will step off at 10:40 a.m. from the north parking lot of the NHCC\, moving north on 4th Street. Come march alongside Dolores Huerta as the Aztec dancers lead the way. Chants from the Chicano and farm worker movement will echo through the streets as our community volunteers and leaders march. The pace for la marcha will be slow so that everyone can participate. We will complete the two-mile loop by around noon…returning south from 8th Street where we join the Fiesta on the NHCC’s beautiful Plaza Mayor. \nFiesta: 12 pm-3:30 pm\nCésar Chávez believed that community connections were best strengthened through personal relationships . That meant sharing a meal\, having fun and including the whole family. So it is our mission every year to celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved civil rights leader with a fiesta combining food\, music\, dancing\, information tables\, and activities for children in our Kid’s Corner. New Mexico native and cofounder of the United Farm Workers Union Dolores Huerta will once again honor our event as Keynote Speaker. Señora Huerta continues to be a civil rights icon worldwide to this day. We are also honored to host accomplished actor\, musician\, and composer Daniel Valdez. Additionally\, our event will honor ¡Sí Se Puede! awardees and community leaders Dr. Adelamar Alcantara and Michael Casaus\, and local acts Baracutanga and La Tropa Felizz will provide musical entertainment.

For the 19th annual festival\, Tricklock and the NHCC present Migrant Songs. \nMigrant Songs is a choral performance art piece that combines stories and songs from human and non-human migrants. This experimental visual and sound performance incorporates interviews with migrants living in the city of Albuquerque who come from many parts of the world\, including Mexico\, Cuba\, El Salvador\, Costa Rica\, The Philippines\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Syria\, Palestine\, and Vietnam\, to name a few. The film will be shown at 7 pm \nRaquel has worked as a live-in\, uniformed maid for a well-to-do family in Santiago\, Chile for over 20 years. Now 41\, she is part of the family in some ways\, as emotional attachments—both positive and negative—attest\, but in others remains apart\, even expendable. \nWhen her employers decide that she needs help and hire an additional maid\, Raquel feels that she must fight for her place in the household. Her “guerrilla war” against a series of newcomers reaches increasingly audacious heights\, until someone quite different turns up and Raquel’s world begins\, very gently\, to expand. La Nana\, described as a “microcosm of Latin social hierarchy\,” also focuses on one woman’s journey to free herself from a mental servitude of her own making. Presented in partnership with Women’s International Study Center (WISC) as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. During a third grade lesson on the Civil Rights movement and Rosa Parks\, a Latino boy raises his hand to ask\, “Where did we sit on the bus?” and his teacher can’t answer the question. DESCRIPTION:A reading by visiting poet Natalie Scenters-Zapico and Albuquerque Poet Laureate Michelle Otero\n5:00 pm bosque walk with the poets\, starting at NW corner of NHCC parking lot \n6:30 pm poetry reading\, Salon Ortega \nA partnership between the NHCC\, Letras Latinas (Notre Dame) and the Academy of American Poets Poetry Coalition\, this reading and book signing links poetry with the concept of democracy and features Natalie Scenters-Zapico and Albuquerque Poet Laureate Michelle Otero. “What is it then\, between us” is a quote from Walt Whitman— the father of free verse\, Bard of Brooklyn\, the voice of Democracy — who was born 200 years ago\, in 1819. \n \n\nPoet Natalie Scenters-Zapico is a fronteriza from the sister cities of El Paso\, Texas\, U.S.A.\, and Cd. Juárez\, Chihuahua\, México. Her first book The Verging Cities (Center for Literary Publishing 2015) won the PEN American/Joyce Osterweil Award\, Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award\, NACCS Foco Book Prize\, and the Utah Book Award. She has won fellowships from the Lannan Foundation (2017)\, CantoMundo (2015)\, and a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation (2018). Her poems have appeared in a wide range of anthologies and literary magazines including Best American Poetry 2015\, POETRY\, Tin House\, Kenyon Review\, and more. \n\n\nMichelle Otero\, Albuquerque’s fourth Poet Laureate\, is the author of Malinche’s Daughter\, an essay collection based on her work with women survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Oaxaca\, Mexico as a Fulbright Fellow. She works with fellow artists and local farmers to implement the Community Table project\, which combines art\, local agriculture\, and economic development as a platform for neighborhood revitalization.

SUMMARY:Trinity Downwinders 2nd Annual Benefit (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:1 to 5 pm \nTrinity Downwinders 2nd Annual Benefit being held to raise funds for members of the TBDC to travel to Washington\, DC for further Congressional Hearings.  There was a Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on June 27\, 2018\, which was attended by over 12 members of the TBDC.  Members of the TBDC are preparing to travel to Washington\, DC for hearings on expanding the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) to include the people of New Mexico.  Members will testify before Congress on the negative health effects suffered by the people of New Mexico due to the over exposure to radiation after the July 16\, 1945\, nuclear detonation (atomic bomb).  Many people living in and around the Trinity Test Site (150 mile radius) have suffered and continue to suffer with health problems since the time of the test. \n \nRECA was passed in 1990 by the US Government to provide health care coverage and compensation to downwinders from other parts of the country but has never included the people of New Mexico.  The fund has paid out over 2.3 Billion Dollars in reparations to downwinders in parts of Nevada\, Utah\, Idaho\, Arizona and Colorado but never to New Mexico downwinders.  It also provides the best health care coverage available with no limits\, deductibles\, co-payments\, etc. \nThe TBDC has the full support of the New Mexico Congressional delegation.  Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich are co-sponsors of the bill to amend RECA to include the people of New Mexico.  Representative Ben Ray Lujan is the primary sponsor on the House side and both bills have bi-partisan support in the US Congress.  Newly elected Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham is also in support of the bills to amend RECA. \nMusicians Featured:  New Mexico 2018 Hall of Fame recipient Franc Chewiwie & the Latin Jazz AllStars and Paul Pino & The Tone Daddies and *Nosotros \nTickets: $20/person\, $35/couple. SUMMARY:La Canoa: Daniel Webb "The Power and Place of the Apachería in Colonial New Mexico"
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Daniel Webb as he examines the history of the diverse population of Athapaskan-speaking peoples identified as Apache (Ndé) in the colonial archives of northern New Spain. He will trace the different stages of their migration and territorial expansion across the vast geographical expanse known as the Apachería (the Apaches’ ancestral homelands)\, illustrating their relations with other sovereign Indian nations and Hispano settlers\, and the policies that Spain introduced in the eighteenth century to restrict their mobility. Through analysis of a wide range of historical materials\, including sources from the Spanish Archives of New Mexico and the Archivo General de la Nación de México\, Webb’s research highlights the cultural practices and the environmental conditions that allowed the diverse Apache bands\, clans and family lineages to flourish in the periphery of colonial New Mexico. Paradoxically\, this contributed to the decline of tribal sovereignty in the nineteenth century. \nDaniel Webb (University of Chicago\, Ph.D. 2017) is a Visiting Scholar at the University of New Mexico’s Center for Regional Studies. He is an early American historian with specializations in Native American\, U.S.-Mexico Borderlands\, and Latino/a history. His research has been supported by the John Carter Brown Library\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture. \nThis event is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Barelas Stories: Four Workshops
DESCRIPTION:10:30 am to 12:30 pm \nResidents of Barelas are invited to a series of workshops that will result in a trilogy of plays about the neighborhood. The dates are March 9\, 16\, 23 and 30.  Do you have stories\, images\, characters or incidents about the neighborhood that you’d like to see in a play? In this series of four sessions we will play with words and techniques that reveal our stories and our styles. The workshops will culminate with a public sharing of stories\, anecdotes and scenes at the NHCC.  Workshops will be led by Barelas residents/playwrights Leonard Madrid\, Raúl Garza and Mónica Sánchez. His full-length play Fantasmaville received the National Latino Playwriting Award. He has been awarded the Kennedy Center’s Latinx award for playwriting three times. \nMónica Sánchez has followed her bliss towards a life in the theatre and the theatre of life. SUMMARY:Kala Anjali (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nNatyakalanjali Academy of Dance and Music presents Kala Anjali\, an evening of East Indian dance\, music\, and martial arts. Nataykalanjali believes strongly in using the arts and deep-rooted culture of India for the betterment of today’s world. All profits from the show will be donated to the victims of the Kerala floods in Southern India\, who have lost their homes in these floods. \nThis presentation seeks to create a cross-cultural conversation between the Indian classical arts and New Mexican viewers\, making art forms accessible to different audiences around the world. Bharatanatyam (an Indian classical dance form) and Indian classical music are versatile and complete idioms\, capable of telling stories. The Indian martial arts are said to be one of the most ancient arts of warfare. Natyakalanjali considers it to be an honor to be able to share these artistic experiences for a cause.\n$25 w/ $5 discount for students \n \nKerala\, the southernmost tip of India\, receives approximately 2\,000 millimeters of rainfall annually. At the end of 2018\, Kerala received 2\,350 millimeters of rain in just two weeks. As a result\, two main rivers\, the Periyar and the Pamba\, were flooded and 22 dams had to be opened to avoid damage to the structures. This led to landslides and flooding in 13 of the 14 districts in Kerala. Nearly 21\,747 miles of roads\, an estimated 174\,000 houses\, and 218 bridges need to be rebuilt. Crops of around 46\,000 hectares have been destroyed\, and the total flood loss has been estimated to be $5.6 billion USD. Kala Anjali hopes to add a drop of assistance to this ocean of need in its humble way \nNatyakalanjali is an organization for the arts of India—Bharatanatyam\, including Carnatic music and allied classical and contemporary forms\, with a holistic focus on education\, performance\, and community outreach. Natyakalanjali is also a premiere academy of Bharathanatyam (Indian dance) and Carnatic (South Indian vocal music) in Albuquerque\, with branches in Little Rock\, AR and Trivandrum\, India. Natyakalanjali focuses on traditional ways of imparting Indian arts. \nKala Anjali’s vision and mission stem from two principles: first\, every artist is a sensitive respondent to experiences within and around him/her\, and second\, ambient and holistic exposure to excellence in the arts must be offered as a benefit to the world.

DESCRIPTION:The Chola is a significant figure in the Latina imagination for the ways that she represents a feminine strength\, power\, and resilience in the face of racial\, gender\, and economic adversity. She is a figure that many young Latinas in the U.S. admire and emulate.
