(CSC)\, a non-profit organization promoting the peoples and cultures of the southwestern US and northern México\, is part of educational programming related to People Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements. CSC focuses on developing cultural\, economic and educational events and programs that reflect the rich Mexicano and indigenous cultural heritage of the Greater Southwest. Sandoval has been active for more than four decades in community\, cultural\, environmental and civil rights efforts in New Mexico and across the US.  He was one of the co-coordinators of the original Earth Day in 1970. \nPeople Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements is open to the public from April 6-October 19\, 2018\, Wednesdays – Fridays\, 10 am-5 pm\, and the first Saturday of the month\, 1-5 pm.

An emphasis is placed on exploring traditional Hispanic dishes\, providing basic information/free screenings from local Western and alternative health practitioners\, and creating a vibrant atmosphere with art activities and live music. SUMMARY:“Hamilton”: Changing the Way We Learn History
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nDuring this event\, teachers and teens will lead an interactive discussion (with music\, video and lyrics) about why the School Library Journal calls “Hamilton” a “‘darn near perfect’ teaching tool for history” and how rap\, hip hop\, spoken word poetry and other popular genres can newly engage young people (and the rest of us) in learning about historical events. \nThe radiating effects of “Hamilton\,” the musical\, are wide-ranging. The rap/hip hop lyrics have drawn young people to the story of Alexander Hamilton and the birth of a nation. The musical has made a bestseller (again) of Ron Chernow’s biography of Hamilton. Poetry-lovers are finding even more space for rap and hip hop in the narrative canon. And Lin Manuel Miranda has been launched into stardom\, including a 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award and a 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. \n“Hamilton” is also changing the way we understand history. “The primarily black and Hispanic cast reminds audiences that American history is not just the history of white people\, and frequent allusions to slavery serve as constant reminders that just as the revolutionaries were fighting for their freedom\, slaves were held in bondage” (The Atlantic\, 2015). The musical also emphasizes the significant role that immigrants have played in the nation’s history. \nThis event will be facilitated by teens from Albuquerque High\, teens and teachers from Bosque School\, and the NHCC’s Director of History and Literary Arts Valerie Martínez.\nFree public event

DESCRIPTION:10:30 am \nThe April 7\, 2018\, speaker is Robert Torrez and the title of his presentation is “Voices From the Past: The Comanche raid of 1776 & Other Tales of New Mexico.” The title of his presentation is taken from his recently published book by the same name.  The book will be available after the meeting. \nRobert J. Tórrez was born and raised in the northern New Mexico community of Los Ojos and received his undergraduate and graduate education at Highlands University in Las Vegas and the University of New Mexico. He served as the New Mexico State Historian from 1987 until his retirement in December 2000. In addition to his monthly column Voices From the Past on New Mexico history\, he is the author of five books on various aspects of New Mexico history and has contributed chapters to more than twenty books and anthologies\, including a recent textbook for use in New Mexico schools.

DESCRIPTION:March—10:30 am\n\n\nFiesta—12 noon-4 pm \nJoin us in honoring the life and legacy of César Chávez at the 25th annual César Chávez Day Fiesta\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia—beginning at 10:30 am at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and ending at noon on the Center’s Plaza Mayor. Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, and live music.\nFree public event \n\n\n \nWe are proud to welcome Dolores Huerta to deliver our keynote speech and actor/composer/musician/activist Danny Valdez to perform. Additionally\, the 2018 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, NM\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. \nDanny Valdez joined the UFW in his early years\, and later became a founding member of El Teatro Campesino\, helping to produce theatre and compose music that brought the message of the UFW to the farmworker. Valdez is an accomplished actor\, musician\, and composer; he may be best known for his roles in such classic movies as Zoot Suit and La Bamba. \nDuring the week leading up to this wonderful event\, a collaboration of student and community organizations will hold Farmworkers Awareness Week\, a three-day event honoring the legacy of the farmworker community through interactive activities\, information booths\, art displays\, and farmworker presentations. This special event will be held at the University of New Mexico Student Union Building-Atrium\, April 2 through April 4 from 11 am to 3:30 pm.

SUMMARY:People Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Humans of New Mexico\, this exhibition features photo portraits and first person stories of everyday New Mexicans and their experiences in social movements. The intent of the exhibition is to engage community in conversation about how social movements have shaped and defined New Mexico and how New Mexicans have influenced social justice work beyond our state borders. There is a rich tradition of social justice initiatives in New Mexico. These serve as unique case studies promoting grass-roots\, distinctive solutions based on the philosophy of people power. This exhibit is a community-wide effort to capture the complex issues that affect our communities and voice the everyday practices of resistance. Agency through testimonials is at the heart of “People Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements.”

Best known for his volatile friendship with legendary journalist-provocateur Hunter S. Thompson\, who used him as inspiration for the character Dr. Gonzo in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas\, Acosta was himself the author of two groundbreaking autobiographical novels\, The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo and The Revolt of the Cockroach People. His powerful literary voice\, brash courtroom style\, and notorious revolutionary antics made him a revered figure in the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The film weaves archival footage and images with dramatized portrayals of Acosta\, Thompson\, and other key figures and moments of the era. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nOne of the most important\, yet least known activists of our time\, Dolores Huerta was an equal partner in founding the first farmworkers’ union with César Chávez. Tirelessly leading the fight for racial and labor justice\, Huerta evolved into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century—and she continues the fight to this day\, in her late 80s. Dolores chronicles Huerta’s life from her childhood in Stockton\, California to her early years with the United Farm Workers\, from her work with the headline-making grape boycott launched in 1965 to her role in the feminist movement of the ’70s\, to her continued work as a fearless activist\, willing to accept the personal sacrifices involved in committing one’s life to social change. The film features interviews with Gloria Steinem\, Luis Valdez\, Angela Davis\, Hillary Clinton\, and Huerta’s children\, among others.
