SUMMARY:Film: Con el viento/Facing the Wind
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nCon el viento honors the filmmaker’s grandparents’ village\, and the disappearance of its culture with their passing\, while examining the issue of uprooting in all its complexity. After 20 years away in Buenos Aires\, Mónica\, a dancer and choreographer\, receives a call that her father is dying and must return to the remote village in Burgos\, Spain\, where she was born. When she arrives\, her father has already passed away and her mother asks her to stay and help her sell the family home. As winter sets in—a time of perpetual silence and extreme cold—the mother and daughter\, now strangers to each other\, seek to reconcile while lacking the words to do so. Presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \n2017; Meritxell Colell Aparicio; Spanish with English subtitles; 108 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: La Diabla
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nDomingos en Arte\, the summer music and dance series presented by MelazaMusic and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, enters its fourth season\, with concerts scheduled through August. We have invited a wide range of Latin artists for family-friendly summer Sundays that feature live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine in the NHCC’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard. \nLa Diabla\, from Tijuana\, BC\, Mexico\, performing on July 7\, has been “cumbiando” since before it was cool. The band’s name comes from an old Celso Piña tune\, and their music can be powerful and aggressive\, romantic and cheerful\, even dark and macabre. La Diabla has been described as La Sonora Dinamita meets Daft Punk\, or Andrés Landero meets N.W.A.—but with masks\, and with something for everyone to dance to! \n$15 Adults w/ a $2 discount for NHCC members. Admission is free for children 12 and younger \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Film: Embrace of the Serpent/El abrazo de la serpiente
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nFilmed almost entirely in black and white in the Amazon jungle\, Embrace of the Serpent focuses on the relationship between an Amazonian shaman and two Western scientists over the course of 40 years\, and was inspired by the travel journals\, written decades apart\, of two explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of a sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic plant. In respecting spirituality of place and rules of nature handed down through centuries\, it attains\, in addition to its extraordinary visual beauty\, what has been described as “mystical higher ground.” The third film by director Ciro Guerra\, Embrace of the Serpent is the first Colombian film ever to be nominated for an Academy Award\, for Best Foreign Language Film. Presented as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \n2015; Ciro Guerra; Spanish\, Huitoto\, Latin\, Okaina\, Portuguese\, Tikuna\, Wanano\, German\, English\, with English subtitles; 125 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Compañía Manuel Liñán\, ¡VIVA!
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque presents Compañía Manuel Liñán in ¡VIVA!\, a song to the freedom of movement\, where the feminine essence is embraced through the masculine body\, where gender roles\, in a codified world like that of flamenco\, are broken with joy and enjoyment\, creating new terrains that\, although unexplored\, are not distant…. \n!VIVA! celebrates movement through the character of the female dancer. In a celebratory key\, Liñán proposes the plurality of the dance\, the different forms\, and the singularity of each form. And he does it with six bailaores-bailarines\, who are in charge of exploring and diving into this fascinating universe of the feminine\, seen from the masculine\, thus exposing these two identities which are both part of our own nature. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!
