Abdalla is a former professor of art studio at the University of New Mexico and his work is featured in the NHCC Art Museum exhibition\, “Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldy Collage”. Lowrider: Custom Made in New Mexico\, a beautiful photography book that pays homage to an enduring but evolving\, cultural tradition with a fascinating compilation of four decades of lowriding\, including photographs by New Mexico’s most renowned documentarians with cultural studies of lowriders in their communities. In addition\, Levi Romero will read his poem “Wheels” which is featured in the book. \nLowriding is a beloved cultural tradition in New Mexico\, especially the northern communities and villages including Española\, also known as the lowrider capital of the world. The classic car fixed up for shows and cruising has become a symbol of Hispano and community pride for the car aficionados\, artists\, and mechanics whose lives are immersed in the culture.  Don Usner and collaborators have produced an insightful overview of lowriding in New Mexico\, how it evolved\, the culture\, and the car makers themselves who are also known as lowriders. \nThis free event will take place at 2pm on November 5th\, 2016 in the Library within the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s History and Literary Arts Building.\nFree public event

SUMMARY:Unveiling of Rudolfo Anaya Bust
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nJoin the National Hispanic Cultural Center for an unveiling and dedication of Reynaldo “Sonny” Rivera’s sculptural bust of Rudolfo Anaya in the Center’s History and Literary Arts Library from 6 to 7 pm\, in advance of the Center’s presentation of Mr. Anaya’s work The Season of La Llorona in the Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. \nGenerously donated by Mr. Anaya\, the sculpture was accepted as a general acquisition of the NHCC by its Board of Directors in August 2016\, and will be on display in the History and Literary Arts Library. The sculpture is the original prototype from which bronzed busts of Mr. Anaya have been reproduced; the latter currently reside at the Albuquerque Museum and the Rudolfo Anaya Elementary School in Albuquerque\, New Mexico. The installation of Mr. Anaya’s portrait in the Library and this dedication were made possible thanks to the generous support of New Mexico Mutual.\nFree community event \n \nA beloved native New Mexican\, Mr. Anaya is an educator and renowned writer. Considered the father of contemporary Chicano literature\, he received the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama in 2015 and the National Medal of Arts from President George W. Bush in 2001. Mr Anaya was raised in Santa Rosa and Albuquerque. His most famous works include Bless Me\, Ultima (1972)\, Heart of Aztlán (1976)\, and Tortuga (1979). More recent works of fiction include Randy Lopez Goes Home: A Novel (2011) and The Old Man’s Love Story (2013). \nThe NHCC has proudly worked with Mr. Anaya since its opening in October 2000\, and has presented many of his works\, including the current presentation of The Season of La Llorona as part of the Center’s Siembra: Latino Theatre Season\, and the planned 2018 presentation of an opera adaptation of Bless Me\, Ultima.

DESCRIPTION:8 pm both days \nYjastros 31 is a flamenco epic full of world premiere choreographic masterpieces. Mystical and imaginative\, the show explores innovation within the art form of flamenco. Artistic Director Joaquin Encinias presents new dances and music by Spanish master artists Estevez\, Paños\, Alvarez\, and Ruiz\, along with performances by guest artist Ivan Vargas\, all of whom intertwine the roots of flamenco with modern interpretations to create a visually exquisite tapestry. \nRafael Estevez\, the new Artistic Director of Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía\, produced “Çiertas Danças” with partner Valeriano Paños\, transporting audiences into a dream sequence in three parts. \nLucia Alvarez\, “La Piñona\,” created “La Serrana” in partnership with cantaora Eva Ruiz and guitarist Calvin Hazen. The original choreography and musical score reflect the difficult life of the farmers from La Piñona’s hometown of Jimena de la Frontera\, Spain. \nGuest artist Ivan Vargas performs in a virtuosic quintet featuring the men of Yjastros\, and then rounds out the full stage show of all-star dance\, music\, and vocals with a solo work. \nYjastros 31 marries the traditions of flamenco with contemporary innovation\, moving the dance forward while\, in the same breath\, paying homage to the past. \nYjastros—Forever Creating\, Never the Same.\n$20\, $30\, $40\, $50 w/ $5 off for Seniors and NHCC Members

DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nRepresenting five generations in North America\, Ronstadt Generations continues the family’s musical traditions with Michael J. Ronstadt (younger brother of Linda) and his sons\, Michael G. and Petie D. Multi-instrumentalists and solo performers in their own right\, they present an exciting repertoire that preserves the traditional Southwestern and Mexican songs of their heritage while offering innovative original material. In 2012 three veteran musicians—Alex Flores\, Sam Eagon\, and Aaron Emery—came on board to form the six-piece ensemble Ronstadt Generations y Los Tucsonenses (the Tucsonians). Playing tenor saxophone\, bass\, and drums\, respectively\, Alex\, Sam\, and Aaron add a colorful dimension to an already powerful presentation that respects tradition while exploring innovation. The ensemble’s albums include Prelude (2012) and Epilogue (2014). Presented in partnership with Pimentel Music\, this is the eighth concert in the Pimentel Music Series. It will be followed by an after-party at Hotel Albuquerque.\n$35

DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nAward-winning performer Antonio Reyna is celebrating his 20th anniversary as an entertainer with an afternoon of music and dance for the whole family. Reyna is a New Mexican treasure who is beloved throughout the Southwest and Mexico\, and whose performances have influenced the trajectory of traditional mariachi music. He is joined on stage by his friends Mariachi Raíces de América from El Paso\, TX\, Trio América de Albuquerque\, and Baile Ilusión from Pojoaque\, NM. The concert also features a very special guest appearance by María Elena Leal Beltrán\, daughter of the late Lola Beltrán\, as a tribute to her mother\, Lola La Grande\, for whom Reyna also gave tribute performances at Mexico’s Festival Cultural de Lola Beltrán in 2015 and 2016. \nBorn in Gallup\, NM\, Reyna began his career as a mariachi vocalist in 1996\, touring with Nelson Martinez before going solo in 2002. In the course of his career\, he has received numerous awards from the New Mexico Hispano Music Association and the New Mexico Hispano Entertainers Association\, including Male Vocalist of the Year\, Mariachi of the Year\, Ranchera Song of the Year\, and Original Song of the Year.
