SUMMARY:Festival Chispa Presents: Daymé Arocena
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nRaised in Havana\, award-winning Afro-Cuban singer-songwriter Daymé Arocena has quickly become the voice for a new generation of talented Cuban millennials who are reimagining their African roots through a lens that filters jazz\, Cuban neo-soul\, funk\, and hip hop. Still in her mid-20s\, she has been described as “Cuba’s finest young female singer” (The Guardian). She began performing semi-professionally at the age of eight\, and became the lead singer for the band Los Primos at fourteen. Considered a musical prodigy\, she is also a trained composer\, arranger\, choir director\, and band leader. \nHer devotion to Afro-Cuban culture and to the Afro-Cuban Santería faith\, with its traditional chants and repertoire\, combined with an ability to absorb music of any kind\, have made Arocena one of the most exciting\, charismatic artists on the contemporary music scene. Her work encompasses the classic rhythms and diverse musical make-up of the country she grew up in\, while reaching outward to the world she has encountered in her recent travels. \nDaymé Arocena has been compared to both Celia Cruz and Aretha Franklin\, and her debut album\, Nueva Era\, made National Public Radio’s list of 50 favorite albums of 2015. Her latest release\, Cubafonía\, is already garnering rave reviews around the world. \nFestival Chispa Presents\, a partnership with Avokado Artists\, is a series that showcases some of the finest and most innovative groups\, both legendary and up-and-coming\, that the Latino world has to offer. Fusing various musical genres\, cultures\, and traditions\, this dynamic series breaks down musical boundaries and leaves the audience wanting more!\n$22\, $27

SUMMARY:Reading & Booksigning: Jonathan Marcantoni\, Kings of 7th Avenue and Tristiana
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin author Jonathan Marcantoni\, who will be traveling to Albuquerque from Colorado\, for an interactive reading event\, drawing from the material in his books Kings of 7th Avenue and Tristiana. \nKings of 7th Avenue takes an unflinching look at Tampa’s multi-ethnic communities to show how the roots of misogyny and abuse have grown so deep that they have become tradition\, tracing the meteoric rise of one couple and the violent fall of another against the backdrop of Tampa’s infamous Ybor City club district. Tristiana\, Marcantoni’s first Spanish-language novel\, explores a beautiful and troubled land where a group of men and women debate between the playful comfort of the world of ideas and the cruel reality of political violence. The epic of these “Tristianos\,” embodied in paintings and murals—transcends the lines connecting the struggles of the past and the dreams of a free future.\nFree public event

SUMMARY:AMP Concerts Presents Over the Rhine (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nAfter more than 20 years of making music\, it’s obvious that Ohio duo Over The Rhine is in it for the long haul. Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist\, named to Paste magazine’s list of 100 Best Living Songwriters\, began performing together in 1990 in local Cincinnati clubs and gathering places. Their first show drew about 20 people\, most of them friends. But even from this somewhat humble beginning\, audiences knew that they had stumbled onto something special.  Treating their listeners like family\, Karin and Linford kept them close with simple candle-lit stages and playful handwritten newsletters\, but it was the band’s songs above all that continued to draw in more and more committed fans.  Karin’s voice\, full of longing and love\, seeming to pierce the soul\, has become the unmistakable focal point of Over The Rhine’s richly spiritual music.\n$27 \n\nThe title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. By serving as a venue and posting the event on its website\, the NHCC is not endorsing any views expressed in the title or description of the event\, nor is it endorsing the content of the event.

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Los Hacheros
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm) \nBrooklyn’s Los Hacheros are modern-day torchbearers of the Golden Age of Latin music\, reviving folkloric styles like son montuno\, guaracha\, and salsa\, and often combining them with bomba\, a fiery rhythm from the mountains of Puerto Rico. Their debut album Pilón was acclaimed for “…its solid arrangements and lively original songs [that] have impressed old-school salseros and young music fans alike.” Their sophomore album\, Bambulaye\, was recorded live to vintage analog tape\, giving it a raw\, warm sound similar to that of the Latin legends who have inspired the group. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in the NHCC’s Fountain Courtyard\, enters its second season beginning in June. We have invited some of our musician friends\, from the local community and outside\, for lively community get-togethers right next to the beautiful Rio Grande Bosque. Spend Sunday evenings from 7:30 pm to 10 pm enjoying live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine with family and friends in this enchanting courtyard setting\, with one or all of the groups who will be performing this season.\n$17; free for 12 and younger \n \n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities. Under the management of AMP Concerts\, NMC2 will create programs in collaboration with State Historic Sites\, DCA Museums and various cultural organizations with the goal of increasing public programs statewide and promoting New Mexico as a destination for arts and culture.\nThis is a rain or shine event.

SUMMARY:La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (doors open at 5:30 pm) \nLa Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness\, understanding\, and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music\, band member make-up\, and instruments. Mariachi groups\, like orchestras\, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments\, such as the guitarrón\, are unique to this form of music. Performances will demonstrate various styles within the genre\, including son\, huapango\, and ranchera. \nThere will also be a demonstration of the beautiful teaching exchange between “master instructor” and student in violin\, guitar\, and voice. This exercise demonstrates the great gift of the MSA Workshop offered through Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque\, because it is very rare in any musical genre that iconic master musicians interact with and teach youthful students. It would be the equivalent\, in rock and roll\, of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards teaching voice and guitar to an everyday music student. \nFor more information\, please check out the Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque website: www.mariachispectacular.com.\nFree community event
