SUMMARY:Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Billy the Kid & Other Tall Tales
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm Friday\n2:00 pm & 7:00 pm Saturday \nBilly the Kid\, Blue Jean Blues\, Southwest FolkTails\, & Giselle\nFestival Ballet Albuquerque presents an original production of Billy the Kid\, a ballet telling the story of Billy from childhood until his death at age 22\, true to historical accuracy as anyone knows. The ballet has an ensemble of cowboys\, townspeople\, dance hall girls\, and the important people in Billy’s life\, including his beloved Mother\, John Tunstall\, J.J. Dolan\, love interest Maria\, and of course\, Sheriff Pat Garrett. \n \nThe evening begins with the music of the Mystic Vic Blues Band playing live onstage with the FBA professional dancers in Blue Jean Blues choreographed by Patricia Dickinson Wells. A new children’s ballet\, Southwest FolkTails is based on families of New Mexican “critters” sporting tails with character costumes expertly designed and constructed by master craftsman\, Joe Moncada. Imagine hummingbirds\, quails\, coyotes\, snakes\, and roosters! \nThe evening ends with the classical 18th century ballet\, Giselle (in One Act) complete with village scenes\, beautiful costumes\, and scenery. The epic ballet premiered in 1841\, but most of the versions today are based on the revivals by choreographer Marius Petipa in the early 20th century.  Set to music by composer Adolphe Adam\, the epic story follows the tragically short life of Giselle through love\, heartache\, death\, and the after-death where she is summoned from her grave by the vengeful\, deadly sisterhood of the Willis who are unmarried women who died after being betrayed by their lover. Giselle’s great love for her betrayer\, Albrecht\, saves him from sure death by the Willis\, and thus saves herself from becoming one of them. \nCome ½ hour early before showtime and enjoy a pre-concert performance by Mystic Vic Blues Band! \n$14\, $20\, $29\, $39 & $49 w/ a $2 discount for seniors and children 10 years old and younger \nRun Time: 2 hours \n*The event is a rental event not an NHCC production. The title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. By serving as a venue and posting the event on its website\, the NHCC is not endorsing any views expressed in the title or description of the event\, nor is it endorsing the content of the event.

SUMMARY:Film: The Human Zoo (Calafate\, zoológicos humanos)
DESCRIPTION:5:00 pm Reception & Cash Bar\n6:00 pm Doors\n6:30 pm Director’s talk\n7:00 pm Screening\nPanel Discussion & Q&A to immediately follow \nNHCC | Bank of America Theatre \nToward the end of the 19th century\, 25 people from four different Chilean indigenous groups were kidnapped from Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia by a German businessman and taken to Europe to be exhibited as attractions in cities throughout the continent. THE HUMAN ZOO uncovers the history of this colonial spectacle\, and follows the fallout into the present. \nWith Chilean historian Christian Baez\, director Hans Mülchi Bremer contacts these native people’s descendants\, and traces their voyage from South America across Europe\, paying particular attention to the fate of Calafate\, a Selk’nam boy who was taken when he was just 9 years old\, and survived to return to his native land. \nOthers were not so lucky. The filmmakers discover a collection of skeletons of five Kawesqar people in the archives of the Anthropology Department at the University of Zurich\, and with help from the Swiss researchers\, begin the process of repatriation to Chile. \nTheir efforts—and those of the Kawesqar descendants—reveal not only the persisting legacy of colonial oppression\, but also the fissures that still separate indigenous Chilean communities from their national government. \nProgram generously supported by UNM Latin American and Iberian Institute\, FIU Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center\, Guadalupe Institute Western Hemisphere Center\, New Mexico Humanities Now!\, & Student Organization for Latin American Studies (SOLAS) \nThe Human Zoo (original title: Calafate\, zoológicos humanos) | A film by Han Mülchi Bremer | 93 minutes/ color | English; Spanish/ English subtitles | Release: 2013 | Copyright: 2011 | https://icarusfilms.com/if-zoo | Run Time: 93 mins \nFree community event

SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Relatos de la Resistencia: Querida Sara
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 96 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here: \nRelatos de la Resistencia: Buscando un lugar en el mundo \nThe relationship between Patricia Franquesa\, the director of this documentary\, and Sara\, the first cab driver in Afghanistan\, is proposed to us as a story of friendship whose thread is united by the gaze in front of the camera\, where we stand as spectators\, but to which the protagonist of the documentary constantly speaks. \nAll the material filmed in front of this strong and confident woman\, who is aware of being filmed and in the story\, is offered to us as a tribute that acquires greater impact when we learn about the political and social evolution that took place and continues to take place in Afghanistan. \nSynopsis: This is a moving portrait of Sara\, the first woman cab driver in Afghanistan. Spanish filmmaker Patricia Franquesa captures the strength of a powerful woman who breaks through the barriers of a society marked by patriarchy. Sara has bright eyes\, tireless in defending women’s rights and fighting to achieve what seemed impossible. It is an inspiring story of friendship between two women full of life\, a hymn to empathy and dialogue between cultures: the circular tale of Sara’s life story turns from fear to love and from love to fear: a testimony of a reality that no longer exist. \nScreening: Querida Sara | Director/s: Patricia Franquesa | Year: 2021 | Format: Digital | Running time: Largometraje – 60 min | Genre: Documental | Country: España\, Serbia y Noruega | Original version: farsi\, uzbeko e inglés | Subtitles: inglés\, francés\, portugués\, italiano\, español | Rated: SC \n \nRelatos de la Resistencia: Buscando un lugar en el mundo\, the strength of documentary filmmaking in Spain is a phenomenon with three decades of history. The work of the monographic festivals has been crucial to maintain its strength and validity among the public interested in the new expressive forms of cinema\, but also among those who seek in the documentary to know the perspective and experiences of others\, often very distant spatially\, temporally\, and culturally. \nIn collaboration with the DocsBarcelona festival\, this online film series that stars the month of April on our Vimeo channel brings together four documentaries that allow us to meet people whose lives are marked by adventure\, and not always in its most positive interpretation. In addition\, the direction of these works tells us about the place from where we elaborate the stories of loss\, but also those of survival and overcoming. \nPROGRAM\nApril 5: La Chana (2017)\, by Lucija Stojevic\nApril 12: Los Bilbao (2022)\, by Pedro Speroni\nApril 19: Light Falls Vertical (2022)\, by Efthymia Zymvragaki\nApril 26: Querida Sara (2021)\, by Patricia Franquesa

DESCRIPTION:2:00 pm Saturday & Sunday\n7:30 pm Wednesday & Friday  \nMusic / Georges Bizet\nLibretto / Henri Meilhac & Ludovic Halévy\, Spanish translation by Eduardo De Bray \nHead to the National Hispanic Cultural Center for one of the most popular operas of our time! \nOpera Southwest and the NHCC present Carmen – en español! “Habanera” and “Toreador” are well-known arias that linger in your mind long after the performance is over. Despite Don Jose’s efforts to resist her charms\, he succumbs to Carmen’s enchantment\, resulting in his downfall and Carmen’s demise. \n$22\, $42\, $63\, $85\, $105 with discounts for groups of 8 or more\, anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \n \nThe presentation of Carmen will be in Spanish. DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm: Screening\n8:00 pm: Panel Discussion\, immediately after screening. \nNHCC | Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts: Wells Fargo Auditorium \nAfro Mundo presents All the World is Sleeping. \nFighting for her own life and the ones she loves\, a Chicana in New Mexico sinks deeper into her addiction while struggling to surface for her daughter. This incredible film was created by Bold Futures and seven system-impacted women: we bring light to complexities of trauma\, substance use\, and parenting in this raw and riveting story. \nIn 2017 Bold Futures NM resourced seven system-impacted women to create a story that explored the complexities of trauma\, substance use\, and parenting in New Mexico. The insight derived through this process\, and from our leaders evolved into a feature film highlighting characters with authenticity and heart with the aim of pushing back against the stigma faced by pregnant women and people living through substance use and addiction. This beautiful film will shed light on the realities of addiction\, and the resources that are so desperately needed for families living in cycles of substance use and addiction while lifting the expertise of women who have lived these truths. \nCreated by: Bold Futures \nDirected by: Ryan Lacen \nStory created by: Jade Sanchez\, Doralee Urban\, Myra Salazar\, Patricia Marez\, Carly Hicks\, Kayleigh Smith\, Malissa Trujillo \nExecutive Produced by: Micaela Lara Cadena\, Charlene Bencomo\, Denicia Cadena\, Esperanza Dodge\, Tannia Esparza \nCo-Produced by: Kat Sanchez\, Naomie Germain \nProduced by: Ian Simon P.G.A\, Ryan Lacen P.G.A\, Sonja Mereu\, Anthony Baldino \nCast: Melissa Barrera\, Kristen Gutoskie\, Lisandra Tena\, Luis Bordonada\, with Jackie Cruz and Jorge Garcia \nRun Time: 1 hour 50 minutes. | Rated: TV-MA | Language: English | Genre: Drama \nFree community event.
