SUMMARY:¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte!
DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \n¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte! celebrates the NHCC Art Museum’s growing permanent collection with a revitalized vibe and a brand new selection of works. This exhibition was a collaborative project as the entire NHCC Visual Arts staff and interns combed through the collection and worked together to decide which pieces should welcome in 2017. This sampling explores the contributions of these artists and how each work can serve as a reminder of the heart that thrives in strong and resilient communities. \nThe collection contains over 2\,500 artworks by Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, and Latina/o\, artists from around the globe most of which have been generously donated to the museum by artists and collectors. It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum exists to support and engage the work of these artists and share their creations and their stories with the broader community.

SUMMARY:Because It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM
DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nNow\, you can also purchase the catalog for this incredible exhibit. \nBecause It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM examines race and identity in New Mexico and is a space for artistic expression that grapples with the complexities of who we are\, how we are understood\, and how that impacts the way we live (or don’t) in a variety of places.  The exhibition features approximately 26 newly created artworks by artists with different experiences in New Mexico alongside works from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum’s permanent collection. All of the artworks delve into  race and place through an intersectional lens alongside gender\, sexuality\, class\, nationality\, citizenship status\, etc. from local\, national\, and international perspectives. \nThis museum exhibition included much contemplation by the Visual Arts program staff and interns about what it might look like to create an exhibit that relinquished a bit of institutional control and placed it in the hands of the artists. Many of the works were not seen in their completed form until just weeks before the opening. The process continues to be a learning experience and the hope is to maintain an environment of openness and education\, for the staff and our visitors\, even after the exhibition closes. \nWe are so honored to work with this amazing group of artists. \nInvited artists include: Adelina Cruz\, Adriana Ortiz-Carmona\, Apolo Gomez Autumn Chacon\, Aziza Murray\, Baochi Zhang\, Brandee Caoba\, Corey Pickett\, Cynthia Cook\, Earl McBride\, Ehren Kee Natay\, Eliza Naranjo Morse\, Eric-Paul Riege\, Erin Currier\, Fatemeh Baigmoradi\, Grace Rosario Perkins\, Hamed Marwan\, Jami Porter Lara\, Jessica Chao\, Joanna Keane Lopez\, John Boyce\, Lucrecia Troncoso\, Monica Kennedy\, Nanibah Chacon\, Rose B. SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: La Chamba
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nWith roots in East and South Central Los Angeles\, La Chamba is driven by electric guitar that fuses ‘60’s psychedelic-inspired surf-pop from Peru with Afro-Latin rhythms. “Chamba\,” literally meaning “work\,” is a word used throughout the barrios of Latin America to describe one’s hustle. The band’s sound pays homage to the melodies and grooves of Peruvian Chicha music popular among the working classes of Lima and the Amazon. La Chamba encourages folks to let loose and release their grind on the dance floor—their audience is as much a part of the performance as they are. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Patio Courtyard that features live music by a wide range of Latino artists\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. The NHCC’s newest on-campus restaurant—La Fonda del Bosque—will be offering unique themed dinners before each concert and providing a cash bar and tapas throughout the night.\n$13 in advance\, $18 day of show \n  Thank you to our Domingos en Arte media sponsor Telemundo 2 Kasa! \n \n\n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities. Under the management of AMP Concerts\, NMC2 will create programs in collaboration with State Historic Sites\, DCA Museums and various cultural organizations with the goal of increasing public programs statewide and promoting New Mexico as a destination for arts and culture.\nThis is a rain or shine event.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Film: The New Americans
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nJuly screenings in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series continue Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on our Immigration Experience. This six-week series is a project of City Lore\, a cultural center for the arts and humanities based in New York City. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of NEH’s Community Conversations initiative\, and features documentary film screenings and scholar-led discussions designed to encourage an informed discussion of immigration issues against the backdrop of our immigration history. \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is one of 24 organizations selected nationwide to participate in the Becoming American project. The scholar/moderator for the screenings and discussions at the Center is Dr. Gabriel Sanchez\, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico. The theme for Unit Three\, presented on July 12\, is “Between Two Worlds: Identity and Acculturation.” \nEpisode 1\, “The Nigerians\,” of The New Americans documents the struggles of the Nwidor family\, Nigerians forced to flee their homes because of military oppression. Israel\, a former chemical engineer\, his wife Ngozi and their two children have waited for resettlement for years in a refugee camp in Benin. They share their hopes and humorously acknowledge their exaggerated expectations of new life in America. In their first weeks in low-income housing in Chicago\, they are grateful for a dry place to sleep and their first McDonald’s hamburgers\, but find much of their new world confusing. Both parents struggle with low-paying jobs in the hotel industry\, and the expectations of their family in Nigeria to send money home regularly. We watch as their attempts to adapt and succeed crumble at times into despair\, but also share with them moments of hope as they struggle to attain their American Dream. Director Steve James was co-producer of the acclaimed documentary Hoop Dreams\,\n2004; Steve James; English; 34 minutes; not rated.\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nMaferefun Orisha introduces the public to the pantheon of Afro-Cuban gods and goddesses. These saints—or Orisha—represent different aspects of nature and humanity. The first set of this performance showcases the Orishas through story\, song\, and dance. The Bataleros de Querque will sing traditional songs in Yoruban while playing the sacred batá drums\, while the Odara Dance Ensemble will portray the different gods and goddesses through dance and costume. Hear and see Chango\, the god of thunder and lightning; Ochun\, the river goddess of love; Oya\, the goddess of the wind; and more. \nDuring the second set\, the Odara Dance Ensemble and the Bataleros de Querque will perform and teach a set of Afro-Cuban folkloric dances\, including the rumba\, macuta\, and son. Odara will ask for audience participation\, so this will be your chance to learn these dances. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Patio Courtyard that features live music by a wide range of Latino artists\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine.\n$11 in advance\, $14 day of show \n    Thank you to our Domingos en Arte media sponsor Telemundo 2 Kasa! \n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities. Under the management of AMP Concerts\, NMC2 will create programs in collaboration with State Historic Sites\, DCA Museums and various cultural organizations with the goal of increasing public programs statewide and promoting New Mexico as a destination for arts and culture.\nThis is a rain or shine event.
