DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \n¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte! celebrates the NHCC Art Museum’s growing permanent collection with a revitalized vibe and a brand new selection of works. This exhibition was a collaborative project as the entire NHCC Visual Arts staff and interns combed through the collection and worked together to decide which pieces should welcome in 2017. This sampling explores the contributions of these artists and how each work can serve as a reminder of the heart that thrives in strong and resilient communities. \nThe collection contains over 2\,500 artworks by Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, and Latina/o\, artists from around the globe most of which have been generously donated to the museum by artists and collectors. It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum exists to support and engage the work of these artists and share their creations and their stories with the broader community.

SUMMARY:Braceros Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives\, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States\, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term\, primarily agricultural labor contracts. In 1942\, these workers came to remedy wartime production shortages by supplying much-needed labor during the early years of World War II.  The Bracero Program\, which derived its name from the Spanish word for a manual laborer\, “bracero” continued uninterrupted until 1964. During this extensive program\, 4.6 million contracts were signed\, with many individuals returning several times on different contracts\, making it the largest United States contract labor program. An examination of the exhibition images\, documents\, and artifacts contributes to our understanding of the lives of migrant workers in Mexico and the United States\, as well as our knowledge of immigration\, nationalism\, labor practices\, and race relations.\nThis exhibit is free and open to the public

DESCRIPTION:Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing\, creating art\, writing\, learning from guest artists\, writing\,  sharing\, writing\, collaborating\, writing\, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. DESCRIPTION:The Chola is a significant figure in the Latina imagination for the ways that she represents a feminine strength\, power\, and resilience in the face of racial\, gender\, and economic adversity. She is a figure that many young Latinas in the U.S. admire and emulate. The last few years have seen a surge in interest in the Chola as a figure and this exhibition will explore this dynamic from a feminist perspective through art and popular culture. \nThe Qué Chola Photo Board will be displayed in the exhibition and is an opportunity to honor the Cholas in our lives\, past and present\, by sharing photos of homegirls showing off their style and pride. \nIf you have a photo you’d like included on the photo board you can send them to us. And if you send them before March 8\, they will be part of the Qué Chola! opening reception. DESCRIPTION:As a final celebration of Women’s History month and in connection with the NHCC’s current exhibition “Qué Chola\,” high school students across the Albuquerque area were invited to submit visual work they had created. Artists were asked to think critically and broadly while examining the experiences of women and the role of gender identity in today’s society. Dr. López is a professor of sociology at the University of New Mexico. She directs and co-founded the Institute for the Study of Race and Social Justice and she is the founding coordinator of the New Mexico Statewide Race\, Gender\, Class Data Policy Consortium. Jessica Helen Lopez is the City of Albuquerque Poet Laureate and is a nationally recognized award-winning slam poet with a number of published poetry collections. Internationally recognized he was awarded the Medalla de Acero al Merito Historico Capitan Alonso de Leon by the Sociedad Nuevoleonesa de Historia\, Geografia y Estadistica\, Monterrey\, Mexico in 2000. In 2005 he was inducted into the prestigious knighthood order of the Orden de Isabel la Catolica by King Juan Carlos of Spain.

Since the beginning of the 9th century\, when the tomb was discovered\, Santiago de Compostela has been a pan-European place of peregrination. The city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985\, and the European Union declared the Camino de Santiago to be the first European Cultural Itinerary in 1987. According to Catholic tradition\, completing a pilgrimage on the Camino\, some 500 miles along the major routes\, assures forgiveness of one’s sins. SUMMARY:La Canoa: John Mraz "The Braceros Program and the Hermanos Mayo"
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join us as Dr. Mraz examines the Hermanos Mayo\, Spanish-Mexican photojournalists whose images of the braceros make up the current NHCC exhibit\, Braceros: Photographed by the Hermanos Mayo. The photojournalist collective knew what it meant to emigrate\, as their story began during one of the modern world’s great conflagrations: the Spanish Civil War. With the defeat of the Republic in 1939\, the Mayo came to Mexico where they worked for more than 40 periodicals\, creating an enormous archive of some five million negatives. The Hermanos Mayo’s photographs of the braceros are important for what they show us about these migratory workers and what they tell us about the perspectives of these graphic reporters. It is important to applaud the artfulness of the Mayo collective while recognizing that particular social realities had to exist before they could be reproduced in photographs. As Julio Mayo said\, “Photography has its creative part\, but within reality.” \nJohn Mraz is Research Professor at the Instituto de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades\, Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (Mexico) and National Researcher III. He has published more than 200 articles\, book chapters\, and essays in Europe\, Latin America\, and the United States on the uses of photography\, cinema\, and video in recounting history. Among his books are Photographing the Mexican Revolution; Looking for Mexico: Modern Visual Culture and National Identity; Nacho López\, Mexican Photographer\, and Uprooted: Braceros in the Hermanos Mayo Lens. Now imagine that a joke is then made on your behalf. Poking fun at your natural hair\, or teasing your personality characteristics because they reject the stereotype associated with your group affiliation. “Not being black enough\,” “Acting white\,” or having your native language skills criticized by friends and family are often commonplace. These statements or questions are often a way to challenge our belonging or even our presence in certain spaces. This can happen at school\, work or even at the grocery store. Learn how to work through these situations and what to say when microaggressions appear.\n$40 Early Bird Registration\, $80 Groups of 3 & $60 Late Registration\n(fees not included in the price of the registration) \nVal Day-Sanchez and Carli Romero present a 1 day training on handling these dangerous comments in our daily lives. That doesn’t mean we should judge. \n10:15 am What Is A Microaggression?: It doesn’t matter if it was a joke\, or your intention was to provide support\, if someone leaves the interaction feeling offended or unsafe\, clearly your intention was not aligned with your impact\, now what? Perhaps you are singled out because of your sexual orientation? You go home to visit and feel anxious and bombarded by the off the cuff comments that are made\, asking why you aren’t married? Or perhaps at a company mixer your coworkers begin debasing your friends because of their race or religion? You want to say something but you’re worried about offending your family\, being alienated at work\, or ostracizing your friends\, what are your next steps? \n11 am White Fragility\, Relationship Dynamics & Trauma: What are the barriers keeping us silent? Who is speaking? Do we feel safe? Do we have power? All of this can effect how we respond to this poisonous statements. We all have biases\, some we are aware of while others just seem natural. We’ve never examined them before. How do microaggressions reintroduce us to our past trauma? What’s the harm in stereotypes and assumptions and why does it seem like white people seem more surprised by this than people of color? Well\, that phenomenon actually has a name\, “White Fragility.” \n12 pm-1 pm Microaggressions and Recovery: The tightening of our chest\, sweaty palms\, shortness of breath\, this is often how our bodies respond to microaggressions. Learn coping mechanisms to help with this process. Shame\, grief\, anger\, guilt can come up when speaking to microaggressions on either side of the instances\, how do we deal with that? Well\, it starts with sending love to our past self. We are talking about the reality that our beliefs drive our behaviors. Now from a mindfulness/therapeutic/recovery perspective – growth requires an ongoing examination of beliefs\, and that is intricately connected to our racial/gendered conditioning. Let’s learn how to recognize and shift our beliefs which are grounded in biases. \n1 pm-2 pm Lunch Break: Off Campus \n2 pm-3 pm How Can we Respond to Microaggressions?: Let’s work through case studies. If it was a friend or an acquaintance versus the family matriarch? What about your employer or someone you work with? What can you say when confronted with a microaggression depends a lot on the setting. \n4:30 pm-5 pm Closing thoughts: Whether we identify as marginalized group members or as an ally\, what can we do in our little space in the world to create a more inclusive environment? Is it the way that we talk? The way that we engage on social media?
